Vascular And Auditory Changes After Repetitive Traumatic Brain Injury, Courtney Lynn Penn
Vascular And Auditory Changes After Repetitive Traumatic Brain Injury, Courtney Lynn Penn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects over 2.87 million people in the US each year. The large majority of these injuries can be classified as mild. However, evidence suggests that even mild TBIs can lead to long-lasting symptoms that greatly impact quality of life. This is particularly true when an individual sustains multiple TBIs (repetitive TBI, rTBI). Much of the damage caused by rTBI is due to secondary injury mechanisms that cause the initial injury site to spread and worsen over time. No therapies currently exist which can mitigate secondary injury, and monitoring this phase of rTBI is difficult. Development of …

Withaferin A And Immune Checkpoint Blocker Therapy For The Treatment Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Roukiah Khalil
Withaferin A And Immune Checkpoint Blocker Therapy For The Treatment Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Roukiah Khalil
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the first cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women with an overall five-year survival rate of 28%. Although immune checkpoint blockers (ICBs) are currently FDA-approved for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), only 17-20% of patients achieve durable responses by the induction of immunologic memory. The lack of response in most patients can be attributed to the tumor-intrinsic or tumor-extrinsic immune resistance mechanisms. A biomarker of importance is the Programmed Death Ligand-1 (PD-L1), as higher PD-L1 expression is usually associated with a better response to ICBs. Although studies have attempted to combine ICBs …
Investigation Of Permanent Tattoos To Increase Myoelectric Signal Connectivity In Prosthetics, Guy Pugh
Investigation Of Permanent Tattoos To Increase Myoelectric Signal Connectivity In Prosthetics, Guy Pugh
Master of Science in Kinesiology
Myoelectric prosthetics offer users increased functionality in many facits of their lives. However, maintaining reliable connectivity between sEMG sensors and targeted muscle locations can be problematic. Volume fluctuation of the residual limb, dirt, sweat, and movement of the socket and sensor over the limb can all because of signal disruption leading some users to find the myoelectric prostheses, costing thousands of dollars, to be unreliable, and stop using it. To increase connectivity between the optimal myoelectric sites and sEMG sensors, this paper proposes the use of permanent ink tattoos to create a stable location which a sensor can move over …

Improving The Mental Health Nursing Competencies Of Nurses Caring For Patients With History Of Substance Use Disorder In Long-Term Care Settings, Nancyver Lafleur-Omeler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background
While nurses are often on the front lines of working with patients with a history of substance use disorders (SUD), most have limited training in this area. Nurses who work in Long Term Care (LTC) settings are often challenged to resolve the practical issue of needing more competency in caring for SUD patients. Horner et al. (2019) agreed that the deficiency of mental health knowledge and skills in healthcare workers is linked to decreased quality of care, which can diminish patient outcomes. This lack of competency must be addressed (Margoliese & Vandyck, 2019).

A Healthcare Claims Investigation Of Parasomnia Epidemiology, Associations With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, And Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder Correlates, Anh Thy Ha Nguyen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Parasomnias, such as sleepwalking and nightmare disorder, are abnormal behaviors and emotions emanating from sleep or wake to sleep transitions. Parasomnias can lead to significant adverse outcomes – sleepwalking can result in injuries and hospitalizations, frequent nightmares are associated with self-harm and suicidal thoughts, and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is linked to neurodegeneration. Despite a history of fascination with abnormal sleep behaviors in the general and medical communities, epidemiologic understanding of parasomnias remains limited, in part due to their amnestic nature and presumption that they are benign childhood problems. This work used the MarketScan® Commercial Claims and …

An estimated 500 Central African refugee families have been resettled in the Tampa Bay Area since 2002 (RPC, 2022). The cycles of trauma that they have endured place them in vulnerable positions regarding their mental health. Struggling to exist within underfunded social programs that are rigid in their expectations and with the current system of reactive care vs preventative care, the refugees in Tampa are put in a difficult situation of navigating their own health and wellbeing in lieu of having the full support of the United States government and their community. I will discuss how these refugees experience and …
Assessment Of Iso Heart Rate Method To Estimate Metabolic Rate, Karl Williams
Assessment Of Iso Heart Rate Method To Estimate Metabolic Rate, Karl Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Thermal equilibrium is primarily maintained by the body’s ability to dissipate internal heat generated during muscle contraction. A number of methods have been used to quantify this thermal burden such as charts and observation of workplace activities and behavior, however these have varying levels of validity. ISO 8996 defines a more accurate method of metabolic rate estimation that uses heart rate and maximal work capacity (MWC); however this requires the use of laboratory settings and equipment that are rarely available in the field. Equations such as the ACSM metabolic equation for the total energy expenditure of walking, hereafter referred to …
Investigating The Role Of Endothelial Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 2 In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Berk U. Rasheed
Investigating The Role Of Endothelial Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 2 In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Berk U. Rasheed
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Doxorubicin (Dox) is a chemotherapeutic drug used to treat various malignancies including breast and ovarian cancers. Accumulating evidence implicates cardiac impairments associated with Dox treatment. The Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 2 (BRCA2) functions to maintain genome-wide stability by promoting DNA-damage repair. Accordingly, cardiomyocyte damage is specifically regulated by contributors of DNA damage repair such as BRCA2. The endothelium, the innermost cells of every blood vessel, act to protect our tissues from noxious elements, however, recent evidence suggests that BRCA2 knockdown compromises endothelial cell function. A putative role of endothelial BRCA2 during Dox-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) remains unknown. We hypothesized that endothelial-specific …
Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Voice pedagogy literature often draws a parallel between a doctor’s ability to diagnose illness and prescribe treatment, and a voice teacher’s ability to identify vocal obstacles and design solutions. The core of these parallel procedures lies in an ability to utilize critical reasoning skills within highly specific contexts. Medical literature describes this as “clinical reasoning” and has studied it as a learned process. Voice pedagogy literature has traditionally described this as an innate process which is solely developed through experience. This document broadly examines the ways in which medical literature has broken down clinical reasoning into specific cognitive processes and …

Evaluation Of Two Methods To Estimate Wet Bulb Globe Temperature From Heat Index, Stephi Pofanl
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is a common method to evaluate environmental factors that contribute to occupational heat stress. The Heat Index (HI) is readily available as an alternative to exposure methods. They both assess the most important contributors that are air temperature and humidity. WBGT also includes radiant heat and air motion. To account for radiant heat and/or air motion, some investigators have suggested adjustments to HI. The purpose of this study is to explore two methods to estimate the usefulness of WBGT from HI.
WBGT data were collected in a variety of locations that included direct sun …
Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch
Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch
Theses and Dissertations
Tilapia is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed fish globally. In terms of human health, tilapia is an excellent source of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and micronutrients. Tilapia and other aquatic species have become increasingly susceptible to contamination, as anthropogenic activities have been increasing around the world. Anthropogenetic activities often introduce high levels of contaminants, including heavy metals, into the marine environment. These contaminants often do not biodegrade, and they are absorbed by aquatic species. Contaminants can bioaccumulate and proceed in biomagnification up the fish food chain putting consumers at an increased risk of exposure. Heavy metals can …

Effects Of Age On Amplitude-Modulated Cvemp Temporal Modulation Transfer Function, Raghav H. Jha
Dissertations, 2020-current
With the aging population on the rise, the need for effective assessment tools to identify risk factors for falls among the elderly is paramount. One independent risk factor for falls is vestibular impairment, but the available vestibular diagnostic tests have limitations. A promising new methodology: amplitude-modulated tones to elicit a vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (AMcVEMP), offers a more detailed examination of vestibular (sacculo-collic reflex) functions. This method assesses non-linearities, synchrony, and magnitude, providing a more thorough evaluation compared to the conventional transient cVEMP. So far, AMcVEMP has only been utilized in young adults.
The current study aimed to investigate the impact …

Resistance Training And Running Performance And Economy: A Literature Review, James Bottrill
Resistance Training And Running Performance And Economy: A Literature Review, James Bottrill
University Honors Theses
Running performance is largely determined by maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), velocity at VO2 max, fractional utilisation of VO2 max and running economy. Running economy is relatively under-researched and could be improved by resistance training because of its neuromuscular underpinnings. However, existing research on this topic is quite unorganised and inconclusive and is yet to prove a direct linkage between resistance training, running economy and performance. This literature review aimed to provide an organised overview of the existing literature, identify and address confounding variables and provide recommendations for future research. A search for studies was conducted via …
