Advance directives (AD) are legal documents outlining a patient's preferences for treatment at the end of life. AD allow people to communicate their end-of-life (EOL) decisions about medical care to family, friends, and health care professionals in the event that they are unable to make those decisions themselves. Many nurses observe patients and their families waiting until the patient is at the end of their life before they initiate an AD. The paramedic profession is an inherently difficult, dangerous and stressful profession. The paramedic is constantly barraged with acute stressors during the performance of his duties. These stressors have predictable, documented, negative effects on performance. The acute and chronic exposure to stress can negatively impact the safety and the well being of the paramedic. These stressors, if not successfully managed, can also result in negative effects to patients. Despite the overwhelming presence of stress in the paramedic environment, most paramedics receive little or no training to successfully perform under stress. The purpose of this research study was to utilize educational tools on healthy lifestyles in order to promote Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DMII) prevention in the Hispanic population in Worthington, Minnesota. Hispanic adults are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) by a physician than non-Hispanics. Since DMII is a preventable disease, education focused on nutrition and activity will help prevent diabetes and its associated comorbidities. An educational seminar was conducted at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Worthington, Minnesota.
