Where Do You Want To Live? A Pilot Study To Establish Housing Preferences Of Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, An Traumatic Brain Injury., Julie Elaine N. Irish, Noorh Aldadi, Marilyn J. Bruin Dec 2017

Bruin

Julie Elaine Irish

Young adults with neurodevelopmental brain disorders such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are often provided with unsuitable public housing that is not tailored to support their differences, needs, and wants. This poster illustrates a pilot research project to survey young adults in this population to find out what their preferences are in terms of where and how they would like to live.

Background
In Vietnam, malaria transmission has been reduced to very low levels over the past 20 years, and as a consequence, the country aims to eliminate malaria by 2030. This study aimed to characterize the dynamics and extent of the parasite reservoir in Central Vietnam, in order to further target elimination strategies and surveillance.
Methods
A 1-year prospective cohort study (n = 429) was performed in three rural communities in Quang Nam province. Six malaria screenings were conducted between November 2014 and November 2015, including systematic clinical examination and blood sampling for malaria parasite identification, as well as molecular and serological …

Background
Lao People Democratic Republic (PDR; Laos), a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, has made important progress in reducing malaria morbidity and mortality in the past 5–6 years, and the northern provinces have very low reported incidence. To support national progress towards elimination, it is critical to verify and understand these changes in disease burden.

Methods
A two-stage cluster cross-sectional survey was conducted in four districts within four northern provinces (Khua, Phongsaly Province; Paktha, Bokeo Province; Nambak, Luang Prabang, and Muang Et, Huaphanh Province). During September and October 2016, demographics and malaria risk factors were collected from a total of 1492 …

Malaria Elimination: Time To Target All Species, Andrew A. Lover, J. Kevin Baird, Roly Gosling, Ric N. Price Dec 2017

Malaria Elimination: Time To Target All Species, Andrew A. Lover, J. Kevin Baird, Roly Gosling, Ric N. Price

Andrew Lover

Important strides have been made within the past decade toward malaria elimination in many regions, and with this progress, the feasibility of eradication is once again under discussion. If the ambitious goal of eradication is to be achieved by 2040, all species of Plasmodium infecting humans will need to be targeted with evidence-based and concerted interventions. In this perspective, the potential barriers to achieving global malaria elimination are discussed with respect to the related diversities in host, parasite, and vector populations. We argue that control strategies need to be reorientated from a sequential attack on each species, dominated by Plasmodium …

Development And Testing Of Eyeremember: A Memory Aid App For Wearables For People With Brain Injury, Tracey Wallace, John T. Morris Dec 2017

Development And Testing Of Eyeremember: A Memory Aid App For Wearables For People With Brain Injury, Tracey Wallace, John T. Morris

Tracey Wallace

EyeRemember is a mobile app designed to run on wearable electronic devices and serve as an external memory aid for people with brain injury (BI). EyeRemember allows users to voice-record information about family, friends and caregivers (referred to as ‘contacts’ in the app). The technology detects the presence of Bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons carried by the user’s contacts and reminds users of the recorded information when contacts are present. EyeRemember was first developed for Google Glass and later for Android Wear smartwatches. Both versions were developed in accordance with user-centered design principles, by including end-users and identifying their needs, …

Norepinephrine, Adrenaline, And Cortisol: Pilots, Nurses, And Unstoppable Rush, Dianne Mcadams-Jones, Randall Johnson

Dianne McAdams-Jones

Cortisol, Adrenaline and Norepinephrine are our defenses against chaotic situations that pose both a threat to our safety and possibly that of others. There is a pressing need to calculate a workable if not successful solution to the stress producing emergency at hand.

Background:HIV RNA is identified in cerebrospinalfluid (CSF) within eightdays of estimated viral exposure. Neurological findings and impaired neuropsychological testing performance are documented in a subset of individuals with acuteHIV infection (AHI). The purpose of this study was to determine whether microstructural white matter and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) are disruptedin AHI.
Methods:We examined 49 AHI (100% male; mean age = 30 ± SD 9.9) and 23 HIV-uninfected Thai participants (78% male; age = 30 ± 5.5) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and rsFC acquired at 3 Tesla, and four neuropsychological tests (summarized as NPZ-4). MRI for the AHI group was …

Designing Effective Point Of Choice Prompts To Promote Active Transportation And Staircase Use At A Canadian University, Hieu Ly Phd, Jennifer D. Irwin Phd

Jennifer D. Irwin

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the most suitable health messages and designs to create point-of-choice prompts for promoting active transportation and stair- case use that would appeal to undergraduate students. Participants: Undergraduate students (N 1⁄4 21; 71% women) were recruited during Fall (2016) and Winter (2017) semesters. Methods: Focus groups (50–80minutes each) were organized to obtain students’ feedback on the kind of messages and poster designs they found motivational. Inductive content analysis was performed on verbatim transcripts. Descriptive statistics were calculated to summarize demographic characteristics of participants. Results: The major themes revealed that participants: preferred simple …
