Activity Monitor Accuracy For Lower-Limb Amputees Living In Colombia And Texas, Gary Guerra Briseno
Activity Monitor Accuracy For Lower-Limb Amputees Living In Colombia And Texas, Gary Guerra Briseno
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Maintaining physical activity for lower limb prosthesis wearers is important in order to reduce comorbidities and decrease physical function. Activity monitors can provide motivation for the wearer and outcome measurements for the health care professional. Two cohorts of lower extremity amputees participated in two separate studies examining the accuracy of activity monitors. Each participant completed a 200m walking trial while activity monitors were fitted to them and step counts were compared with actual counts. For participants walking on even ground in a developing setting no significant differences between pedometer and actual counts were found, nor were there significant differences with …
Predictors Of Postpartum Depression Among Women In Karachi, Pakistan, Vimla Gill John
Predictors Of Postpartum Depression Among Women In Karachi, Pakistan, Vimla Gill John
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pakistan has the highest prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) among Asian countries. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to determine the predictors of PPD among women in Karachi, Pakistan. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping was used as a framework. A purposive convenience sample of 234 postpartum women was taken from out-patient departments of a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. A survey in English and Urdu containing the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), DUREL Religion Index Subscale three, Cohen’s 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Abuse Assessment Screen, Traditional postpartum …
Clinicians’ Perspectives On Adopting A Lung Cancer Palliative Care Intervention, Shaunna Siler
Clinicians’ Perspectives On Adopting A Lung Cancer Palliative Care Intervention, Shaunna Siler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Despite the significant progress in implementing palliative care interventions for cancer patients, few intervention studies seek healthcare clinicians’ input prior to implementation. The purpose of this research was then to explore palliative care and oncology clinicians’ (e.g., physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplains) perspectives on current challenges and useful practices in meeting the quality of life needs of lung cancer patients and family caregivers, and to increase the likelihood of the adoption of a palliative care intervention based on understanding current trends in palliative care delivery at three outpatient oncology sites. The conceptual framework used for this study was the …
A Novel Population Of Cardiovascular Progenitors Persist In Neonates As Mesendodermal Cells, Julia Kim
A Novel Population Of Cardiovascular Progenitors Persist In Neonates As Mesendodermal Cells, Julia Kim
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The rise in mortality due to cardiovascular disease has increased the need to develop an efficient regenerative therapeutic for heart failure. Numerous cell-based therapies have been investigated for myocardial regeneration; however, an optimal progenitor has yet to be discovered. Identifying a resident cell population with enhanced ability to differentiate into multiple lineages would greatly contribute to the field of stem cell-based regenerative therapy. Evidence suggests that endogenous cardiovascular progenitor cells (CPCs) that have been isolated from the heart itself express ISL1, KDR, and MESP1, and are capable of differentiating into all major cardiac lineages. The earlier developmental stage at which …
A Retrospective Lateral Cephalometric Growth Study Of Sagittal Airway Changes, Grace H. Woo
A Retrospective Lateral Cephalometric Growth Study Of Sagittal Airway Changes, Grace H. Woo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Purpose: This study retrospectively examined the average sagittal dimensions in the pharyngeal airway from skeletal and dental Class I males and females from 7 to 16 years of age utilizing longitudinal data from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection. The study evaluated whether average sagittal airway dimensions differed between males and females at each age, and whether the sagittal airway dimension changed with increasing age. Materials and Methods: Sagittal airway dimension based on identifiable anatomical landmarks were digitally traced and measured from the longitudinal lateral cephalograms of 30 females and 32 males from the AAOF Growth …
Targeting Ledgf/P75 To Sensitize Chemoresistant Prostate Cancer Cells To Taxanes, Leslimar Rios-Colón
Targeting Ledgf/P75 To Sensitize Chemoresistant Prostate Cancer Cells To Taxanes, Leslimar Rios-Colón
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most diagnosed cancer in males. This disease disproportionately affects African American men, with a higher incidence and mortality compared to other ethnic/racial groups. An aging male population and the complexity of addressing the health disparities associated with this disease puts PCa into the spotlight due to its serious public health implications and the imminent fiscal challenge over the next decades. Chronic prostate inflammation resulting in activation of stress and prosurvival pathways contribute to disease progression and the development of chemoresistance. Lens epithelium-derived growth factor p75 (LEDGF/p75) is a stressresponse protein that promotes cellular survival …
Marriage And Family Therapy And The Law: Discovering Systemic Common Ground, Jason C. Richards
Marriage And Family Therapy And The Law: Discovering Systemic Common Ground, Jason C. Richards
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Many important decisions regarding couples and families are made by the legal system. However, this system’s adversarial nature often results in relational losses for clients, even when one “wins” a case. Some believe a solution may exist in legally-minded marriage and family therapists, who, as experts in family systems theory, are in a unique position to help facilitate healing in a flawed, but well-meaning family court system (Brooks & Madden, 2012; Madden, 2008). However, the literature reveals that new therapists may lack appropriate legal knowledge when they graduate, suggesting a need for different preparation by marriage and family therapy programs …
