Introduction: The purpose of this study is to explore what happens within families in which a child participates in a pediatric weight management program for the treatment of overweight or obesity and identify strategies and processes for successful weight management.

Method: A qualitative approach was used to collect data from seven families. Individual interviews were conducted with parents, target children, and siblings. Data was analyzed within families and compared between families.

Results: Grounded theory analysis revealed three major essential themes: Shared Burden, Family Congruence, and Collaboration. Descriptive analysis was used to identify recommendations for improving family based weight management programs. …

Physical inactivity is a major public health concern in the United States and is no less of a concern among college students. According to the 2000 National College Health Assessment, as cited by Kilpatrick, Herbert, and Bartholomew (2005), only 38% of college students participate in regular vigorous activity, and only 20% participate in regular moderate activity. This study focused on how fitness assessment results affect intrinsic motivation for physical activity in college students. As the disease is caused by the loss of insulin-producing pancreatic islets, transplantation of donor islets has the potential to not only supplement insulin replacement therapy but to cure type 1 diabetes. Adipose tissue secretes the adipokine, adiponectin (ADPN), which is insulinsensitizing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-atherogenic. Exercise training improves insulin sensitivity and lowers the risk of cardiovascular complications. As some of the metabolic effects of exercise training and ADPN overlap, exercise training has been proposed to increase ADPN. However, most single bout exercise, or short-term (ï‚£3 months) and constant-effort (fixed session duration, fixed number of sessions/week, and fixed intensity) exercise protocols do not produce increases in ADPN in untrained and trained cohorts. Bone loss occurs when the increased bone resorption that occurs with age is not compensated by a corresponding increase in bone formation. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms which regulate bone formation and bone resorption is important for developing diagnostic and treatment strategies for osteoporosis. In my dissertation, we investigated the role of Glutaredoxin 5 (Grx5), Diabetes and Obesity Related protein (DOR), and Claudin 18 (Cldn-18), novel molecules involved in regulating bone formation and bone resorption. The purpose of this study was to establish a foundation for developing an evidence-based assessment guideline to be used by nursing and medical personnel when evaluating a firefighter's ability to return to work after a lower extremity injury. Two on-line survey instruments were used to record the opinions and beliefs of healthcare providers and firefighters. Utilizing grounded theory and the semi-structured interviews of25 participants, this study sought to understand how an insecure attachment affects one's relationship with God. Participants' stories suggested that: I) one's struggle to connect with God was a part of their struggle to connect with others; 2) that experiencing others as safe and responsive contributed to building a more secure attachment with God; and 3) that attachment is less a fixed style and more of an ongoing process: defined as gradual changes made by the participants towards the set-goal of feeling safe and secure. Background and Purpose. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Hispanic/Latina women who are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States. Although Hispanic women have a lower incidence of breast cancer when compared to non-Hispanic White women, they are more likely to develop breast cancer at an advanced stage. In California, Hispanic women have the lowest rate of insurance coverage compared to other ethnic groups.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic inflammatory disease in which the insulin and glutamic acid decarboxylase producing β-cells of the pancreatic islets are killed by autoreactive cells of the immune system in response to a loss of tolerance. Early experiments showed that self-tolerance could be partially restored by oral inoculation with small amounts of insulin. Later experiments showed that insulin autoantigen induced immune tolerance could be greatly enhanced by linkage of β-cell autoantigens (Auto Ag) to adjuvant molecules such as the non-toxic cholera enterotoxin B subunit (CTB). The persistence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket requires an ability to overcome oxidative stress. DNA damage is a major consequence of oxidative stress. Unlike other organisms, a non-base excision repair mechanism for the removal of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG) in P. gingivalis was suggested. Because the uvrB gene is known to be important in nucleotide excision repair, the role of this gene in the repair of oxidative stress-induced DNA damage was investigated. Prostate cancer is stimulated to grow in response to testosterone. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) leads to chemical castration and suppression of prostate cancer cell production. Testosterone levels less then 300ng/ml decreases bone mineral density and could result in osteoporosis. Studies have shown that during the first year of ADT, fracture risk, mainly in hips and spine increases about 50%. In men, 40% of hip fractures result in death. These actions are mediated by the IGF-1R and insulin receptor A (IR-A) both members of the tyrosine- kinase receptors family. Background: The National Cholesterol Education Program and American Heart Association have recommended the use of functional or cholesterol-reducing foods, some categories of which include viscous or soluble fibers, soy protein, plant sterols, and nuts, as aids to reduce serum cholesterol concentrations. Figs are a rich source of viscous fiber and antioxidants. Fig consumption has not been studied in regard to effects in reducing serum lipid concentrations. In previous pilot data, increasing fig consumption for six weeks among volunteers was found to be feasible.
