Education To Dialysis Clinical Staff About The Role Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses In Home Dialysis, Bilinda Dawkins-Francis
Education To Dialysis Clinical Staff About The Role Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses In Home Dialysis, Bilinda Dawkins-Francis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have become substantial issues in the United States. There is a call to action from scholars for nurses, especially advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), to cultivate APRN-led renal discipline teams and gauge directed health results. Nurse practitioners encounter and are responsible for identifying and managing patients in the home dialysis setting. It is essential to increase knowledge, teaching, and treatment options to nurse practitioners and clinical staff regarding the role of APRNs in home dialysis. The purpose of this project was to answer the practice-focused question addressing whether staff education about …
Implementing Motivational Interviewing To Improve Medication Adherence: A Staff Education Project, Marlon Medina
Implementing Motivational Interviewing To Improve Medication Adherence: A Staff Education Project, Marlon Medina
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medication nonadherence is a major health issue among psychiatric patients as studies show a significantly high rate of medication nonadherence among psychiatric patients. This impacts the health outcomes of patients taking psychotropic medications. Psychiatric nurses have a major role to play in implementing strategies to improve medication adherence among patients. This project proposes the implementation of psychoeducation based on motivational interviewing to improve medication adherence among psychiatric patients. An educational workshop was provided to four nurses over 4 weeks to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of staff members at an outpatient care clinic, ultimately, to improve the patients’ medication …
The Lived Experience Of Nursing Faculty At Rural Community Colleges In East Texas During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mary N. Isichei
The Lived Experience Of Nursing Faculty At Rural Community Colleges In East Texas During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mary N. Isichei
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for public health (PH) emergency preparedness and for the formal training of frontline workers, primarily nurses, on how to manage PH emergencies. The need for the latter was especially evident at U.S. rural community colleges (RCC), a subset of institutions of higher education (IHEs), which, due to a lack of resources, lacked PH-trained nursing faculty members (NFMs). The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover the lived experience of NFMs in RCC in East Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic. The phenomenological theoretical (PT) framework assisted in understanding the lived experience of the NFMs …
Perceptions Of Burden Among Informal Caregivers Of Older Adults In Assisted Living, Gösta H W Schlegel
Perceptions Of Burden Among Informal Caregivers Of Older Adults In Assisted Living, Gösta H W Schlegel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few studies have focused on the lived experiences of informal caregivers of residents of assisted living facilities (ALFs) and their perceptions of their caregiver burden, which can lead to decreased physical and mental health, decreased economic status, and negative effects on the care recipient’s wellbeing. A considerable knowledge and practice gap remains regarding how public health practitioners relate to informal caregiving. The purpose of this study was to understand what informal caregivers of ALF residents perceive as factors that affect their caregiver burden and the perceived impact caregiver burden has on the caregiver and their eldercare recipient. The social-ecological model …

Empowering Nurses Through Education To Reduce Patient Falls In An Acute Care Setting, Ericka Ophelia Evans Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient falls are a significant concern in acute health care institutions, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. Nurses play a vital role in patient safety and empowering them with the necessary knowledge and skills is crucial to mitigate the risk of falls. The aim of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to develop and implement an evidence-based staff education program that would improve nurses’ knowledge of fall prevention strategies. To obtain evidence for the project, a comprehensive review of the literature on patient falls, educational interventions, and best practices and guidelines for fall prevention programs …

Experiences Of Undergraduate Nursing Faculty Adapting To The Changes Of The Next Generation Nclex, Marlene Kilpack Whiteside
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Undergraduate nursing faculty are responsible for preparing nursing students for patient care in a dynamic health care setting and are challenged with meeting the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) change to the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN). The National Council of State Boards of Nursing recommended the incorporation of the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) and competency-based curriculum in preparation for NGN testing that began in 2023. Understanding how faculty experienced and adapted to changes in curriculum, patient-centered instruction, and NGN testing may help future nurse faculty in adapting. The purpose of this basic exploratory, qualitative study guided by the achievement …

The Association Between Cognitive Dysfunctions And Cardiovascular Disease Of Minority And Lgbtq+ Communities In The United States, Nathan G. De Shields
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Dementia, the loss of cognitive acuity is an umbrella term of neuro-degenerative symptoms that impact an estimated 6.5 million Americans, and amid heart disease, cancers, and emerging viruses, such as COVID-19, has reportedly increased in prevalence. A cross-sectional study of secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was conducted to analyze minority and non-heterosexual experiences of health risks found higher in prior studies of distress rates in LGBTQ+ adults. The socio-ecological framework was used to interpret the competing ecologies of social health determinants in natural and social settings. Literature reviews on cognitive dysfunction and other vascular …

Education, Occupation, And Healthcare Accessibility As Predictors Of Self-Reporting Memory Rating, Ana Maria Gonzales
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The increasing number of dementia cases in the United States, particularly among women, is a significant concern. This progressively deteriorating cognitive disease may profoundly affect talking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities, interfere with their daily lives, and decrease their life expectancy. Although education, occupation, and healthcare access are individually associated with positive health outcomes, it was essential to explore whether their combination impacts self-reporting memory loss, an indicator of dementia. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of education, occupation, and access to health care as predictors of dementia among women in the United States. This study used …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Our objective was to explore how factors, such as backbone organization changes and COVID-19, affected a collective impact (CI) initiative’s progression through the five CI phases and its components of success. We conducted a case study using semistructured interviews with 17 representatives from the action committee, community-based organization, and health department between January and February 2023 in Santa Clara County, California. Participants were asked how internal and external factors affected their engagement and experiences with the CI initiative. We analyzed the data using structural and holistic coding. Results showed that the initiative’s progression was impacted by intersecting factors; overall findings …

Sleep Attitudes As An Indirect Predictor Of Risk For Metabolic Syndrome In First Year College Students, Sophie Hirsch, Hannah Peach, Trudy L. Moore-Harrison, Philip Zendels, Aria Ruggiero, Jane F. Gaultney
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Background: Habit formation can be a challenge for first-year students. Research has suggested that regardless of sleep knowledge, favorable sleep attitudes predict better sleep.
Aim: Our aim was to investigate whether sleep attitudes directly or indirectly predicted risk for metabolic syndrome via sleep.
Method: Students completed self-report and physiological measures. Participants wore wristwatches to collect sleep data. Path analyses investigated the direct or indirect effect of sleep attitude on risk for metabolic syndrome via subjective sleep (sleep quality, duration, risk for apnea) and objective sleep (sleep efficiency, duration, subjective risk for apnea).
Results: In our subjective analysis that sleep attitudes …

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Managing Financial Toxicity In Oncology Patients, Katelin Muse
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Managing Financial Toxicity In Oncology Patients, Katelin Muse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patients with a cancer diagnosis are counseled at length about the standard of care treatment options, which may include surgery, radiation, anticancer medications, and chemo/immunotherapy through an informed consent process. Unfortunately, the potential economic burden and the accompanying psychological burden is seldom discussed up front. There is a significant need for routine screening and a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention of financial toxicity for the oncology patient. The purpose of this doctoral project was to lead an interprofessional team in the development of a clinical practice guideline for routine financial screening using the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity (COST) tool …
