Dissertations (1934 -)

PATIENT PERCEPTIONS OF PATIENT-EMPOWERING NURSE BEHAVIORS, PATIENT ACTIVATION, AND FUNCTIONAL HEALTH STATUS

AFTER SURGERY

Teresa A. Jerofke, BSN, MSN, APNP-BC

Marquette University, 2013

Patient empowerment has been advocated as a way to engage patients in self-management of chronic illnesses in emerging patient-centered models for healthcare improvement. The majority of research on patient empowerment has studied empowerment as an outcome in outpatient settings, with little attention to provider processes used to empower patients during a hospitalization. Post-operative patients with life-threatening chronic illnesses face multiple illness-related transitions associated with the recovery from their surgery and taking on the role of managing their …

Supervisee Experiences Of Corrective Feedback In Clinical Supervision: A Consensual Qualitative Research Study, David Lyle Phelps Jan 2013

Supervisee Experiences Of Corrective Feedback In Clinical Supervision: A Consensual Qualitative Research Study, David Lyle Phelps

Dissertations (1934 -)

Clinical supervision plays an integral role in counselor development, assisting supervisees to transition from educational coursework to clinical practice. Feedback, including that which is corrective, allows supervisors to transmit knowledge to supervisees and communicate evaluations of supervisee performance. Despite the central role of feedback in clinical supervision, surprisingly little empirical attention has focused on supervisee experiences of corrective feedback in clinical supervision. This study sought to provide a deeper understanding of supervisee experiences of corrective feedback in clinical supervision. Twelve participants were interviewed regarding their experience of corrective feedback in clinical supervision during predoctoral psychology internship. Participants expected to receive …

Sites Of Alcohol Action At The Glun1/Glun2b Nmda Receptor M3-M4 Domain Intersubunit Interfaces, Yuanhao Zhao, M. Wu, Hong Ren, Robert W. Peoples

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor has been shown to be one of the most important target sites of alcohol in the central nervous system. We and others have identified positions in the third and fourth membrane-associated (M) domains of both GluN1 and GluN2A subunits that influence alcohol sensitivity. In the structural model of the NMDA receptor based upon the related GluA2 receptor, the outward face of the M3 domain of one subunit type is oriented toward the M4 domain of the other subunit type. We recently reported that four pairs of alcohol-sensitive amino acid positions in GluN1/GluN2A NMDA receptors interact at …

Dental Student Indebtedness: Where Did It Come From And Where Will It Lead?, Gary L. Stafford Jan 2013

Dental Student Indebtedness: Where Did It Come From And Where Will It Lead?, Gary L. Stafford

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Today’s dental school graduates are burdened by an ever-increasing amount of student loan debt from both their undergraduate and predoctoral educations. Although considered to be multifactorial in origin, this article explores the microeconomic theory of supply and demand as a source for rising tuition costs and subsequent educational debt. The historical context for the cost of a dental education is provided, and serious questions are posed about how this indebtedness might impact the future of the profession.

This case commentary examines the ethical role expectations of an office manager who is not directly involved but becomes aware of the activities. The commentators bring the perspectives of a dental hygienist. academic administrator. and attorney; a teacher of behavioral sciences in a dental school; and a general dentist with many years of practice experience.

Speech Sensorimotor Learning Through A Virtual Vocal Tract, Jeffrey J. Berry, Cassandra North, Benjamin Meyers, Michael T. Johnson Jan 2013

Speech Sensorimotor Learning Through A Virtual Vocal Tract, Jeffrey J. Berry, Cassandra North, Benjamin Meyers, Michael T. Johnson

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Studies of speech sensorimotor learning often manipulate auditory feedback by modifying isolated acoustic parameters such as formant frequency or fundamental frequency using near real-time resynthesis of a participant's speech. An alternative approach is to engage a participant in a total remapping of the sensorimotor working space using a virtual vocal tract. To support this approach for studying speech sensorimotor learning we have developed a system to control an articulatory synthesizer using electromagnetic articulography data. Articulator movement data from the NDI Wave System are streamed to a Maeda articulatory synthesizer. The resulting synthesized speech provides auditory feedback to the participant. This …

Functional Implications Of Impaired Control Of Submaximal Hip Flexion Following Stroke, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Sandra K. Hunter

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction: We quantified sub-maximal torque regulation during low to moderate intensity isometric hip flexion contractions in individuals with stroke and the associations with leg function. Methods: 10 participants with chronic stroke and 10 controls performed isometric hip flexion contractions at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in paretic, non-paretic, and control legs. Results: Participants with stroke had larger torque fluctuations (coefficient of variation, CV), for both the paretic and non-paretic legs, than controls (Pr2 =0.45) and Berg Balance Score (r2=0.38). At 5% MVC, there were larger torque fluctuations in the …
