Hypermedia-Assisted Instruction: Authoring With Learning Guidelines, Carol Sternberger, Linda Meyer

Carol S Sternberger

The use of computers in nursing education has evolved from elementary drill and practice tutorials to challenging presentations. Hypermedia technology has emerged as a powerful method of instruction that allows the user to experience new concepts, gain cognitive skill, and encounter realistic clinical situations in a no-harm environment. Hypermedia incorporates sound, video, graphics, text, and interaction. This article describes the process used to develop a CD-ROM for adult cardiovascular nursing that can be used as an interactive instructional program. A description of the use of Gagne’s instructional design theory is incorporated as a framework to guide the project. Educators possess …

AB Computer-based instruction provides flexibility for staff development in the context of downsizing and rapid change in hospitals. There is an increasing need for nurse involvement in human immunodeficiency virus test counseling in hospitals and clinics because the Centres for Disease Control has recommended that human immunodeficiency virus testing be offered to all pregnant women. In this article, the author describes the development and evaluation of a computer-based instruction program to train nurses in human immunodeficiency virus test counseling.

Embedding A Pedagogical Model In The Design Of An On-Line Course, Carol Sternberger Jul 2015

Embedding A Pedagogical Model In The Design Of An On-Line Course, Carol Sternberger

Carol S Sternberger

The importance of course design and its relationship to learning is overlooked when the electronic version of a course is static. The author discusses the process used to redesign a traditional course into a dynamic and interactive Web-based course by using a pedagogical model developed specifically for hypermedia. Congruence between the instructional methods and the media is a must for a successful design that meets the needs of a wide variety of learners. The hyperlearning model, Dimensions, provides the infrastructure to facilitate the congruence of methods and media while supporting multiple learning styles.

The Great Music Experiment: Taking The Great Cookie Experiment To The Web, Carol Sternberger

Helping undergraduate nursing students understand the research process and equipping them to be good consumers of research presents a challenging agenda to faculty. When the word “research” is spoken, students often respond negatively because they consider it shrouded in mystery with a unique language. Wisneski reported that nursing students feel research is a “necessary evil” that must be faced to progress in the curriculum. 1 Phobias about research continue to interfere with learning and appreciating the role of research in nursing. 2 Teaching foundational concepts is requisite for nurses to use research for evidence-based practice. 1,3 Therefore, the importance of …

Breast Self-Examination: How Nurses Can Influence Performance, Carol Sternberger

Carol S Sternberger

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a detection technique that is performed on a regular monthly basis by only 25% to 35% of American women. The incidence of breast cancer is steadily rising. Mammography not only fails to detect some cancers but is not available to many women. BSE is an important self-care technique that nurses should teach all female patients, regardless of the setting.
