Negotiating Communties [Sic]: Sustainable Cultural Surf Tourism, Andrew Abel, Danny O'Brien Oct 2015

Negotiating Communties [Sic]: Sustainable Cultural Surf Tourism, Andrew Abel, Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

Extract: Papua New Guinea lies north of Australia, and its economy relies heavily on agriculture, mining, fishing and logging. Despite its wealth of natural resources, 40% of the nations 6.3 million people live in poverty; health care, education, communication and transport infrastructures are notoriously lacking (Australian Government, 2010). Nonetheless, Andy recognised his homeland as a diverse country of over 600 islands, more than 800 unique dialects and traditional cultures, with abundant marine, forest, and wildlife resources. He saw surfing as a sport with the potential to empower village communities, and his vision was one where surf tourism would provide a …

Big Eyes, Katrina Bramstedt Oct 2015

Big Eyes, Katrina Bramstedt

Katrina A. Bramstedt

This is a review of the film Big Eyes. Adapted from a true story about artist Margaret Keane, the overarching theme of the movie is plagiarism. While most people think of written works such as books and articles being plagiarized, Big Eyes gives viewers insight into the world of stolen works of visual art, namely paintings. The victim finds moral courage through religion, while the thief (Keane’s husband,Walter) lives in denial until death. Anyone with an interest in art, law, or psychiatry will enjoy what Big Eyes has to offer.

Scholarship Reconsidered: Implications For Reward And Recognition Of Academic Staff In Schools Of Nursing And Beyond, Kylie Smith, Patrick Crookes, Fabienne Else, Ellie Crookes

Ellie Crookes

Aims This paper discusses the issues facing the nursing academic workforce and the development of a project at the University of Wollongong in Australia which attempts to address this problem. Background The project draws on Boyers work around scholarship reconsidered to enable new ways of thinking about the nature of research and how the work of a diversifying workforce can be recognized and rewarded within institutions. Methods We conducted a series of interviews with senior university staff to identify key issues around academic promotion processes. Feedback from these interviews, along with extensive internal and external consultation and benchmarking, will be …

State Diet Manual For Long-Term, Intermediate, And Assisted Living Facilities: User Survey Provides Guidance For The 11th Edition And Helps Create A Marketing Plan, S. Linja, K. Kamp, E. Long, S. Ramsay, M. Sykes, R. Vance

Elaine M. Long

Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to describe the steps taken by a team of RDNs to revise a state-wide diet manual and develop a customer focused dissemination plan. State regulations require an approved diet manual in facilities licensed by the Bureau of Facility Standards (BFS). Our state affiliate is responsible for updating the state Diet Manual every five years. The purpose of this project was to 1) gather formative input from users, 2) update the Diet Manual based on evidence-based practice, and 3) create a dissemination plan. An online survey was developed and the survey link was emailed to …

Perceived Harm Of Secondhand Electronic Cigarette Vapors And Policy Support To Restrict Public Vaping: Results From A National Survey Of Us Adults, Susan Mello, Cabral Bigman, Ashley Sanders-Jackson, Andy Tan Sep 2015

Perceived Harm Of Secondhand Electronic Cigarette Vapors And Policy Support To Restrict Public Vaping: Results From A National Survey Of Us Adults, Susan Mello, Cabral Bigman, Ashley Sanders-Jackson, Andy Tan

Andy SL Tan

Introduction: There is ongoing debate over banning electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use (vaping) in public places. Many people perceive secondhand e-cigarette vapors (SHV) to be relatively harmless, which may affect their support for policies to restrict vaping in public places. Given that awareness of secondhand cigarette smoke risks predicts public support for clean air policies, we hypothesized that greater perceived harm of SHV to personal health would be associated with stronger support for vaping restrictions.

Methods: Data from 1449 US adults in a national online panel was collected from October to December 2013. Using multiple regressions, we predict a three-item scale …

Physical, Thermal And Spectral Properties Of Biofield Energy Treated 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Rama Mohan Tallapragada, Alice Branton, Dahryn Trivedi, Gopal Nayak, Rakesh K. Mishra, Snehasis Jana

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Study background: 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone (DHBP) is an organic compound used for the synthesis of pharmaceutical agents. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of biofield energy treatment on the physical, thermal and spectral properties of DHBP. The study was performed in two groups (control and treated). The control group remained as untreated, and the treated group received Mr. Trivedi’s biofield energy treatment.

Methods: The control and treated DHBP samples were further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), laser particle size analyser, surface area analyser, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and …

Investigation Of Isotopic Abundance Ratio Of Biofield Treated Phenol Derivatives Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Alice Branton, Dahryn Trivedi, Gopal Nayak, Gunin Saikia, Snehasis Jana

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Butylatedhydroxytoluene (BHT) and 4-methoxyphenol (4-MP) are phenol derivatives that are generally known for their antioxidant properties and depigmenting activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of biofield energy treatment on the isotopic abundance in BHT and 4-MP using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). BHT and 4-MP samples were divided into two parts: control and treated. The control group remained untreated while the treated group was subjected to Mr. Trivedi’s biofield treatment. Control and treated samples were characterized using GC-MS. The GC-MS data revealed that the isotopic abundance ratio of 13C/12C or 2H/1H (PM+1)/PM and 18O/16O (PM+2)/PM increased …

Potential Impact Of Biofield Energy Treatment On The Atomic, Physical And Thermal Properties Indium Powder, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Rama Mohan Tallapragada, Alice Branton, Dahryn Trivedi, Gopal Nayak, Omprakash Latiyal, Snehasis Jana

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Indium has gained significant attention in the semiconductor industries due to its unique thermal and optical properties. The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of the biofield energy treatment on the atomic, physical and thermal properties of the indium. The study was performed in two groups (control and treated). The control group remained as untreated, and treated group received Mr. Trivedi’s biofield energy treatment. Subsequently, the control and treated indium samples were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The XRD diffractogram showed the shifting …
