Purpose: Wanting to implement a sustainable learner coaching program in academic medicine and prior exposure to coaching initiatives raised questions including planning, implementation and assessment, and resource allocation. This scoping review examines coaching across medical learners, reported program elements, success factors, and barriers.

Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, informed by Levac et al. on Arskey and O’Malley’s framework and Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, PubMed, Scopus, and ERIC was searched through May 2024. Moyamoya is a progressive cerebrovascular condition leading to stenosis of the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and formation of abnormal vasculature at the base of the brain. Patients ultimately suffer from ischemic and/or hemorrhagic stroke. In Kentucky, patients often present with comorbidities, which classifies them as having moyamoya syndrome (MMS). In this prospective observational study, we measured coagulable- and autoimmune-related factors in MMS subjects to identify possible therapeutic targets and help inform clinical care. Autonomic nervous system responses are attenuated following blood flow restriction (BFR) resistance exercise vs traditional resistance exercise (TRE) in men, but women’s responses are unknown. The purpose of this investigation is to compare the effects of a single BFR vs TRE session on HRV. Thirty-nine adults (M=20, W=19, age: 23±4yrs, body mass: 72.3±13.2kg, height: 169±9cm) participated in the study. Barbell back squat 1 repetition maximum (1RM) testing was performed followed by two randomized and counterbalanced exercise visits ≥48hrs apart (BFR: 4 sets, 30-15-15-15 repetitions, 30% 1RM, 60s rest; TRE: 4 sets x 10 repetitions, 70% 1RM, 60s rest). Statins are highly effective and widely prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs. However, statins cross the blood-brain barrier and decrease neural cholesterol in animal models, raising concern that long-term statin use may impact cholesterol-dependent structures and functions in the brain. Cholesterol is a fundamental component of cell membranes and experimentally decreasing membrane cholesterol has been shown to alter cell morphology in vitro. In addition, brain regions that undergo adult neurogenesis rely on local brain cholesterol for the manufacture of new neuronal membranes. Weight stigma can result in negative patient outcomes and discourage healthcare seeking behaviors. Exploring weight stigma in an interprofessional education (IPE) setting can encourage multidisciplinary dialogue on providing weight-inclusive care. The objective of this paper is to describe a 4-hour Zoom-based IPE workshop related to weight stigma. The workshop featured lectures from subject matter experts interspersed with three breakout room sessions in which interprofessional teams applied the lecture content in problem-based scenarios which incorporated pictures of patient care settings, chart notes, and clinical vignettes. Tbi And Tau Loss-Of-Function Both Affect Naïve Ethanol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Gregg Roman

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with alcohol abuse and higher ethanol sensitivity later in life. Currently, it is poorly understood how ethanol sensitivity changes with time after TBI and whether there are sex-dependent differences in the relationship between TBI and ethanol sensitivity. This study uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to investigate how TBI affects alcohol sensitivity and whether the effects are sex-specific. Our results indicate that flies have a significantly higher sensitivity to the intoxicating levels of ethanol during the acute phase post-TBI, regardless of sex. The increased ethanol sensitivity decreases as time progresses; however, females take longer …

Background: Google Glass™ (Glass), a wearable augmented reality device is gaining popularity in healthcare education due to its portability, affordability, and usefulness, including offering a different vantage point and potential for remote training. We conducted this scoping review to determine its applications, effectiveness, and limitations in healthcare education.

Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched for relevant studies and reports using specified search terms. Two reviewers independently screened studies for eligibility, retrieved data, and compared results.

Results: The search yielded 2,019 articles. After removing duplicates, 1,576 titles, 877 abstracts, and 408 articles were screened; 78 articles were included in this review. …

The uses of cervical mucus and basal body temperature as indicators of return to fertility postpartum have resulted in high unintended pregnancy rates. In 2013, a study found that when women used urine hormone signs in a postpartum/breastfeeding protocol this resulted in fewer pregnancies. Our study established clear demographic, mental health/physical injury, and physical performance data to be collected in a law enforcement recruit training program for injury surveillance and performance monitoring. Furthermore, we identified several items that were classified as relevant, but unlikely to be reported truthfully. These items which can help inform current practice and assist clinicians to determine the trustfulness of information received by patients when working within law enforcement environments.

In this paper, we review the research on the relationship between mental health / well-being and online or remote learning. Our review shows that little scholarship existed prior to 2020 with most studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stock options can be a useful tool in any investor’s portfolio. They allow the skilled investor to increase their leverage and possibility for a higher payout with less risk. However, they are only beneficial if the investor knows how to use them, and if they accurately reflect the price of the option. This presentation hopes to offer some insight into the binomial method of options pricing along with new adjustments to the model in hopes of reflecting a more accurate options price. This, along with the Monte Carlo simulation presented, will hopefully offer some insight into the mathematical investor’s toolbox.

Young Healthy Adults With A Family History Of Hypertension Have Increased Microvascular Reactivity But Decreased Macrovascular Function, Evan L. Matthews, Peter A. Hosick Dr., John J. Guers

OBJECTIVE: To determine if, like hypertensives, normotensive adults with a family history of hypertension (+FHH) display lower microvascular reactivity and conduit artery function than normotensive adults without a family history of hypertension (-FHH). METHODS: A forearm vascular occlusion test was performed on healthy normotensive adults while resting in the supine position. A near infrared spectroscopy sensor placed on the forearm measured skeletal muscle oxygen saturation kinetics to determine microvascular reactivity. Simultaneously, an ultrasound probe placed on the brachial artery above the occlusion cuff was used to assess flow mediated dilation; a test of macrovascular function.
