The Relative Impacts Of Peer Disapproval, Parental Disapproval, And Perceptions Of Risk On Adolescent Marijuana Use, Sean P. Varano, Pamela Kelley, Laurie Becker
Justice Studies Faculty Publications
Adolescent drug use has consistently been a concern for researchers and policymakers for decades as its early onset and continued use can lead to a variety of negative life outcomes. Concerns related to marijuana use have emerged in recent years as states have begun to change laws regarding recreational cannabis use. The current study uses data from a cohort of students in Massachusetts to understand how these changes may impact marijuana use. Findings from this study suggest that nearly three years after the first recreational marijuana retail center opened, the protective features of parental norms toward marijuana use may no …
Why We Come: Investigating Virtual Clubhouse Engagement, Megan H. Price
Why We Come: Investigating Virtual Clubhouse Engagement, Megan H. Price
Wayne State University Dissertations
Only a fraction of individuals living with serious mental illness (SMI) receive adequatetreatment. This study investigates members’ experiences of a virtual adaptation of the Clubhouse model, a psychosocial rehabilitation program. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the virtual Clubhouse, referred to as virtual programming, was established to provide an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar Clubhouse. This qualitative inquiry utilizes a phenomenological approach to understand participant experiences of the virtual model, including factors related to motivation, recovery, and impact. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 members of a Clubhouse located in a large metropolitan city in the U.S. The interviews sought …

Evaluating The Deductive Competence Of Large Language Models, Spencer M. Seals, Valerie L. Shalin
Psychology Faculty Publications
The development of highly fluent large language models (LLMs) has prompted increased interest in assessing their reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. We investigate whether several LLMs can solve a classic type of deductive reasoning problem from the cognitive science literature. The tested LLMs have limited abilities to solve these problems in their conventional form. We performed follow up experiments to investigate if changes to the presentation format and content improve model performance. We do find performance differences between conditions; however, they do not improve overall performance. Moreover, we find that performance interacts with presentation format and content in unexpected ways that …

Background: Approximately 16.5% of U.S. young adults have a cannabis use disorder (CUD) and are at risk for negative outcomes. Treatment can reduce cannabis use, but young adults are less likely to seek help than older adults. Peer Network Counseling-txt (PNC-txt) is a brief, text-delivered, Motivational Interviewing-informed substance use intervention focusing on peer relations and activity spaces as mechanisms for behavioral change. PNC-txt has shown evidence of reducing tobacco and cannabis use with adolescents and young adults, but it has not been tested in the context of legal cannabis use. The current randomized controlled trial sought to expand the evidence …
The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd
The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.

The digital landscape continually evolves with multimodality, enriching the online experience for users. Creators and marketers aim to weave subtle contextual cues from various modalities into congruent content to engage users with a harmonious message. This interplay of multimodal cues is often a crucial factor in attracting users' attention. However, this richness of multimodality presents a challenge to computational modeling, as the semantic contextual cues spanning across modalities need to be unified to capture the true holistic meaning of the multimodal content. This contextual meaning is critical in attracting user engagement as it conveys the intended message of the brand …

The results inferred that there was no significant relationship between the studied variables, indicating there are other confounding …
Environmental Metrics In Action: Exploring U.S. Superfund Sites Affiliated With The Fashion Industry, Nidia K. Trejo
Environmental Metrics In Action: Exploring U.S. Superfund Sites Affiliated With The Fashion Industry, Nidia K. Trejo
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Little is known of Superfund sites, long-term clean up sites, affiliated with the apparel and footwear supply chain in the United States. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) manages the clean up of contaminated sites that pose a significant risk to human health and the environment under the Superfund program. A site can become contaminated if hazardous waste from industrial operations are mismanaged or dumped into the environment, in an uncontrolled manner. In this study, a proposed Superfund site (Mohawk Tannery in Nashua, New Hampshire), an active Superfund site (Ciba-Geigy Corp. in Toms River, New Jersery), and a …
Human System Composite Performance Measures: General Systems Performance Theory Insights, Lawrence Disalvi
Human System Composite Performance Measures: General Systems Performance Theory Insights, Lawrence Disalvi
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Composite Performance Measures (CPMs) of human performance are widely employed in applications that range from mundane to life-changing, yet they are frequently presented without explanation or reference to theoretical underpinnings. The conceptual soundness of a widely used CPM approach, based on additive combination of constituent components, has been called into question by Kondraske. He argues the relevance of General Systems Performance Theory (GSPT) and performance capacity envelope concepts when applied to multidimensional CPM measures.
To obtain evidence-based answers to assertions regarding CPM types and rationale employed in medical and non-medical contexts, a Systematic Descriptive Review was conducted. Separately, the GSPT-based …

Primary Care Physician Trust: The Importance Of Early Medical Intervention For African American Children With Asthma, Harrish Ganesh
Primary Care Physician Trust: The Importance Of Early Medical Intervention For African American Children With Asthma, Harrish Ganesh
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Asthma is a prevalent condition characterized by an individual’s airway becoming inflamed, constricted, and leads to the formation of mucus and difficulty breathing. Nearly 27 million individuals are currently diagnosed with Asthma in the United States, and African Americans are 40% more likely to be diagnosed with asthma than Caucasians. This literature review analyzed multifaceted barriers that restrict African American asthmatic children from gaining consistent asthma treatment. Some of these barriers range from historical racial discrimination that leads to parental mistrust to financial and educational barriers that result in inconsistent pediatric care for asthmatic children. The combination of the above …

An Exploration Of Medical Mistrust In Urban African American Adolescents With High Risk Asthma, Meghna Shukla
Wayne State University Dissertations
Problem: Little is known about the relationship between medical mistrust and health outcomes in adolescents, particularly minority adolescents with chronic illness. There is also a paucity in knowledge on the relationship between caregivers’ trust or mistrust in a provider and if this is similar or dissimilar in their adolescent’s beliefs. To address this critical gap in research, this study aims to explore medical mistrust in AA adolescents with high-risk asthma and their caregivers. Asthma is currently the leading pediatric chronic respiratory condition in the United States, with a reported 60% had uncontrolled asthma symptoms. Asthma disproportionately affects urban, disadvantaged, minority …

Medications For Opioid Use Disorder & Implications For Mobile Methadone Units, Sarah Boeke, Samantha Singer, Stella Resko
Medications For Opioid Use Disorder & Implications For Mobile Methadone Units, Sarah Boeke, Samantha Singer, Stella Resko
Substance Use Research Team
Research has shown the urgent need for updates to guidelines regulating opioid treatment programs (OTPs), especially as the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated overdose rates and the drug supply became increasingly contaminated with fentanyl, synthetic opioids, and xylazine (Moghtaderi et al., 2023)(DEA, 2022). Part 8 of Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), originally enacted in 2001, includes regulations that guide OTPs. The 42 CFR Part 8 final rule, issued by SAMHSA, updates these federal regulations. It is the first major revision since 2001, aimed at expanding access to care, improving patient outcomes, and integrating lessons learned from the COVID-19 …
Probable Extirpation Of The Jackrabbit (Lepus Californicus) From Arkansas, D.B. Sasse
Probable Extirpation Of The Jackrabbit (Lepus Californicus) From Arkansas, D.B. Sasse
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) was first documented in Arkansas during the modern era in Franklin County in 1927. Over the next few decades records were reported from multiple counties in northwest Arkansas and the species was locally common in Benton, Crawford, and Washington counties in the 1950s. The last Arkansas record documented in the scientific literature was from 1968 and since then there have only been three credible reports, with the last being from the late 1980s. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission solicited reports of jackrabbits from the public and failed to find evidence of them from a …
Ultrastructure Of The Biflagellated Spermatozoon In The Western Siren, Siren Nettingi (Caudata: Sirenidae), Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, S.E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I investigated the ultrastructure of the biflagellated spermatozoon of the Western Siren, Siren nettingi, using scanning electron microscopy from salamanders collected in northeastern Arkansas. My primary goal in this study was to reveal the general morphology of the distinctive sperm cell components (two axonemes, two undulating membranes, and two axial fibers), which run nearly the entire length of the spermatozoon. These remarkable gamete structures are found in members of the salamander family Sirenidae and do not conform to spermatozoal ultrastructure of any other salamander species. Moreover, the biflagellated sperm are the end product of an extraordinary assemblage of complex maturation …
History And Distribution Of The Wood Stork (Mycteria Americana) In Arkansas, R. Tumlison, L. Serviss
History And Distribution Of The Wood Stork (Mycteria Americana) In Arkansas, R. Tumlison, L. Serviss
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Wood Storks (Mycteria americana) were thought to be common visitors to Arkansas in the early 1900s, but observations declined mid-century. Surveys of citizen science data and other online sources indicate that numbers of unique observations and total counts of birds have increased since 2000. Storks do not breed here, but have been reported in 34 of 75 counties, and appear mostly in August and September. Birds apparently originate from Mexico. Number of observations have increased since 2016, but many of those observations include only a few birds rather than larger flocks.
