Today there are seventeen and a half million people age 65 or over in the United States. This is nearly one-tenth of our population, and the number is estimated to be increasing by one thousand daily. There are already twenty-five million people age 60 or over, six million age 75 and over, and more than ten thousand over the age of 100. With increased study and research on various factors in the aging process and how they affect the health of elderly people, these figures may go even higher.

The purpose of this study was to find out what patient-centered health teaching programs are currently being carried on in medical institutions belong to the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Self-Supporting Institutions. This organization is composed of representatives of the General Conference of the church and representatives of various private enterprises. Objectives of medical institutions belonging to this organization include care of the sick, and the improvement of patents' health through education of the patient.

The present study is an attempt to objectify the subjective concept of adaptive behavior and to show the effect of institutionalization upon adaptive behavior.

The development of an Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet consisting of forty-five items is a major portion of this study.

The Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet was administered to a sample of ninety patients who, at the time of administration, had been in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC) between one year six months and two years six months.

It was the purpose of this study to identify the emotional needs of patients with infectious hepatitis through the use of nursing process studies. The information obtained, it was hoped, would be helpful in giving nurses better insight into the emotional needs of these patients and to give a basis for planning nursing care.

The descriptive survey was the method used; the tool, the nursing process study. Nursing care was given to six patients between the ages of 18 and 45 who had infectious hepatitis without other complications.

This study was conducted to discover the effects of (1) an interpersonal relationship and (2) an interpersonal relationship and music therapy on preoperative patients in a selected hospital.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study. A checklist and a tape recording of selected music were used as a tool of research. Two groups of preoperative patients were given nursing care by the researcher. Patients in Group One received care with an aim toward developing an interpersonal relationship, while patients in Group Two received the same as Group One with the addition of music therapy.

It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. Recognition of the need for special education for school children with speech handicaps was first made in Potsdam, Germany, in 1896. Twelve years later in 1908 the first public school class in speech correction in the United States was organized in New York City, Programs of speech and hearing re-education in the public schools of the United States have expanded from this single metropolitan system in 1908 to a nation-wide effort in little more than fifty years.

Projective stories from the Fine Revision of the Despert Fables were used to form brief tests of the sensitive psychological areas of parental rejection/sibling rivalry, dependency and aggression/hostility. Public Law 565 in 1954 affected the placement activities provided for the handicapped by State Employment Security (ES) agencies following vocational rehabilitation services rendered by State Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) agencies. Problems relating to standardization and uniformity in referral transmittals of handicapped persons between the two agencies would be expected to arise. With effective and sustained employment of clients following placement service a mutual goal of both agencies, it is important that each group should agree to basic psychological, vocational, social, educational and medical referral items and methodology involved. In short, even where protein malnutrition is primarily a result of poor environment, economy, and technology, other, often less obvious, traditional cultural patterns must be taken into account in any development and improvement program. If kwashiorkor is to be eliminated satisfactorily, and if contingent problems are to be kept to a minimum, these other patterns must often also be modified.
