Patterns Of Infant Mortality In The Upper St. John Valley French Population: 1791-1838, Marcella H. Sorg, Beatrice C. Craig
Patterns Of Infant Mortality In The Upper St. John Valley French Population: 1791-1838, Marcella H. Sorg, Beatrice C. Craig
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this paper is to provide a descriptive analysis of infant mortality patterns in a pre-industrial North American population, the Madawaska French of the upper St. John Valley. A synchronic approach was taken in examining a series of 320 infant deaths identified through family reconstitution. The infant mortality rate for the series is 132 per 1000, low compared to other pre-industrial populations. The large average completed family size of 11.34 is associated with short birth intervals averaging 21.9 months. Women who experience infant mortality were found to have significantly larger completed families that those who did not. Infant …

B789: A Breakeven Analysis Of Two Rural Health Maintenance Organization Models, Steven P. Skinner, Brenda S. Bridges, Stephen D. Reiling, Dennis A. Watkins
Bulletins
This report uses breakeven analysis to assess the financial feasibility of two health maintenance organization (HMO) models which have received considerable support from health-care professionals as potentially viable organizations in rural areas. The two models analyzed, the individual practice association and satellite clinic, represent quite different organizational and financial structures. Enrollment levels required for each HMO model to attain financial viability for specified premium rates are calculated. In addition, the effects of varying key health-care utilization rates on an HMO's financial position are assessed. This information should be of interest to extension agents and others who are working with groups …

Relationship Of Age And Hypertension To Neuropsychological Test Performance, Clyde A. Pentz Iii, Merrill F. Elias, W Gibson Wood, Norman A. Schultz, John Dineen
Relationship Of Age And Hypertension To Neuropsychological Test Performance, Clyde A. Pentz Iii, Merrill F. Elias, W Gibson Wood, Norman A. Schultz, John Dineen
Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Papers
Young adult (X- = 29) and middle aged (X- =50) hypertensive and normotensive subjects were compared with respect to seven neuropsychological test scores derived from tests on the Halstead-Reitan battery. Age main effects, with inferior performance for the middle aged subjects, were observed for the localization and time portions of the Tactile Performance Test (TPT) and for the Trail Making A test. The multivariate age effect was significant for the composite of seven scores. A multivariate blood pressure main effect was obtained and main effect blood pressure was significant for the category test; hypertensives made more errors than normotensives. A …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix C: Social And Economic Assessment, Edward C. Jordan, Roger Creighton
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix C: Social And Economic Assessment, Edward C. Jordan, Roger Creighton
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project
The purpose of this assessment of the social and economic impact of implementing the Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project, therefore, is not to flatly predict impacts. Rather, the intent is to provide information and judgments which can help people recognize the potential for changes and take appropriate steps to prepare for, accommodate, and adjust to those changes. Thus we hope that this report's success will be measured by how well it provides information with which local citizens and all others involved in this project can proceed with their planning and decision-making processes.
