An Adolescent Concussion Management Toolkit For Occupational Therapists, Coby Yoshimura
An Adolescent Concussion Management Toolkit For Occupational Therapists, Coby Yoshimura
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The aim of this project was to demonstrate the role occupational therapists may serve during concussion recovery, by integrating current research and findings into an instructional resource from an occupational therapy (OT) lens. An OT-based toolkit was created to prioritize the identification, assessment, and treatment of two realms of concussion management: functional cognition and vision. The development of a pre and post survey using a modified version of the Generalized Self-Efficacy (GSE) scale was used to determine occupational therapists’ perceived self-efficacy before and after reviewing the created OT-based toolkit. A related samples Wilcoxon signed rank-test was used to analyze pre …

Transitional Vocational Program For Persons With Low Vision And Other Visual Impairments, Andria Lubben, Karen Park, Susan Macdermott, Becki Cohill
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Background: Low Vision is a life-altering visual disability (CDC, 2015). OTs work with individuals with low vision and work in the workplace and education, however, there is no research on OTs working with individuals with low vision in work or post educational settings (Butler, 2016). Vocational and educational needs are often not being met for individuals with low vision (Barbieri et al., 2019).
Problem: OTs have a limited role in adolescent transition to the workplace and higher education in individuals with low vision and other visual impairments.
Purpose: To understand transitional programs that support vocational and educational development of individuals …

Neurorehabilitation For An Individual With Bilateral Thalamic Stroke And Preexisting Visual Impairment Presenting With Impaired Use Of Sensory Cues: A Case Report, Christina Kelly, Jen Meyer, Valery Hanks, Christy Barefield
Articles & Book Chapters
Introduction: Impaired balance is one of the primary causes of functional limitations. Related to sensory deficits specifically, balance disorder in stroke may be caused by decreased central integration of sensory cues, including somatosensory, visual and vestibular input.
Case Presentation: This case describes a 23-year-old male with bilateral thalamic stroke following surgical resection of a recurring optic nerve meningioma. He had a complex medical history and is legally blind. He presented to outpatient neurorehabilitation 5 months following his stroke. He demonstrated absent light touch sensation and absent proprioception and kinesthetic awareness in his upper extremities, lower extremities, and trunk. …
Vision Rehabilitation Impacting Return To Occupation After Post-Concussion Syndrome, Joe Kardine, Ms, Otr/L
Vision Rehabilitation Impacting Return To Occupation After Post-Concussion Syndrome, Joe Kardine, Ms, Otr/L
Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations
Vision rehabilitation is an emerging use of efficient occupation-based intervention in occupational therapy for vision impairment after concussion. Public awareness of untreated concussions has led to more patients seeking treatment for symptom remediation. Efficient interpretations of comprehensive vision evaluations followed by incorporation of vision therapy to treatment improve performance outcomes, increase patient quality of life and ensure compliance of intervention.

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Older adults are at a significantly increased risk of being involved in motor vehicle accidents. Evidence reveals that visual processing speed decreases with age, which may impact driving. The Motor-Free Visual Perception Test- Third Edition (MVPT-3) is used as a pre-driving assessment and has an age-normed Response Time Index that measures visual processing speed. In 2015, a new version, the new Motor-Free Visual Perception Test- Fourth Edition (MVPT-4), was published. The new MVPT-4 does not yet demonstrate its utility in measuring visual processing speed. The purpose of this study was to explore if differences in visual processing speed between younger …

Definition, Assessment And Treatment Of Visual Dependence, Shu-Chun Lee
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Effective orientation and balance are based on the integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory inputs. Vision plays a significant role in spatial orientation and posture maintenance; however, a static tilted frame or dynamic rotating visual disturbance can affect orientation and balance. Visual dependence (VD) is a term used to describe people who overly rely on visual information. Individuals with VD have difficulty in resolving situations wherein visual information is complex or inaccurate. They show greater postural instability and complain of incidences of dizziness and vertigo in sensory conflicting conditions, such as walking along the pavement or the aisle of …

Identification And Intervention For Action Planning Deficits In Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy, Swati M. Surkar
Identification And Intervention For Action Planning Deficits In Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy, Swati M. Surkar
Theses & Dissertations
The primary purpose of this investigation was to describe and quantify action-planning deficits during goal-directed movements in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP). Three specific topics were addressed: brain activation, kinematics, and the use of visual input. First, we assessed prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation during complex goal-directed actions in children with HCP. The outcome suggested that children with HCP have higher PFC activation than age matched typically developing (TD) children during action planning, potentially due to the difficulty in allocating attentional resources for simultaneously processing the cognitive (i.e., attention, memory, information processing) and motor demands of the goal-directed task. Reduced …

Effect Of Lighting On Performance Of Tasks Requiring Near Vision In Older Adults, Karen Leigh James
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
With age, more light is needed in order to function, but the effect of lighting on occupational performance has received little attention in occupational therapy. The purpose of the study was to determine if lighting affects older adults’ ability to perform selected occupational tasks, which require near vision and if lighting levels affects their perceived effort while performing selected occupational tasks. A quasi-experimental, repeated measures design was used with a convenience sample recruited from a retirement community. Thirty participants met the inclusion criteria, which included visual and cognitive screening. The mean age of the 30 participants was 83 years, and …
