Occupational Therapists' Role In Sexual Education For Teens And Young Adults Living With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Taylor M. Urban, Reeti R. Douglas Jan 2024

Occupational Therapists' Role In Sexual Education For Teens And Young Adults Living With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Taylor M. Urban, Reeti R. Douglas

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Teens and young adults living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do not have equal access to sexual education, thus having lower sexual awareness, little knowledge of preventative sexual health care, and having a more difficult time reading sexual body language (Hannah & Stagg, 2016; Holmes et al., 2019; Mogavero & Hsu, 2020). Deficits in these and many other skills may make it more challenging for teens and young adults living with ASD to engage in an intimate or sexual relationship with a consenting partner. Skilled intervention on the occupation of sexual activity and its related dimensions, such as communication and …

Book Review: The Path To Private Practice, Mary K. Thelander

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The Path to Private Practice: A Roadmap for Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists Considering Private Practice (Castro-Casbon, 2023) invites clinicians to consider the benefits of entrepreneurship. The book discusses concerns in the medical and educational systems that may cause occupational therapists (OTs) and speech and language pathologists (SLPs) to experience burnout. The text encourages the reader to consider entering into part-time private practice. Though the book is authored by a SLP, the concerns and strategies discussed in the book are easily compatible with the OT profession. This review details the content of the individual chapters and offers a critical analysis …

Bridging The Gap From New Graduate To Practicing Occupational Therapist: An Educational Resource In Orthopedics, Rachel Carlson, Helen Carey, Kaylee Munch, Lisa Choe Oct 2023

Bridging The Gap From New Graduate To Practicing Occupational Therapist: An Educational Resource In Orthopedics, Rachel Carlson, Helen Carey, Kaylee Munch, Lisa Choe

Fall 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

OT is pivotal in the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals with orthopedic conditions (Nelson, 2010). However, as a new graduate occupational therapist, there is limited support as they make the transition to clinical practice (Turpin et al., 2021). New graduates receive support through professional mentorship and peer support but are often focused on the safe practice of basic skills rather than on best practices (Opoku et al., 2021). New graduates would feel more confident in clinical judgment and decision-making with additional support from mentors and accessible up-to-date resources (Adam et al., 2013). Purpose: Develop an accessible resource for new occupational …

Ganglion Cyst Of Lumbrical Muscles: A Casereport, Pao-Sheng Wu, Chun-Te Lu, Valeria Chiu Dec 2022

Ganglion Cyst Of Lumbrical Muscles: A Casereport, Pao-Sheng Wu, Chun-Te Lu, Valeria Chiu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Ganglion cysts arising from joints or tendons are commonly seen in our daily work as physiatrists, but those originating from muscles have been infrequently reported. In this casereport, we present a patient with a ganglion cyst arising from the fascia of the fourth lumbrical muscle in an occupational therapist, which has never been reported before. The lumbrical muscles of the hand vary greatly from other intrinsic muscles, because of their distinctive structure and function. A ganglion cyst that arises from the lumbrical muscle is supposed to affect the precise movement of the occupational therapist's hand. As a result, the early …

Use Of Occupational Therapy To Optimize Feeding In The Transition Home From The Nicu, Morgan Oster Jan 2022

Use Of Occupational Therapy To Optimize Feeding In The Transition Home From The Nicu, Morgan Oster

OT Student Capstones

Current literature demonstrates a need for occupational therapy services following fragile infants’ discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), specifically regarding feeding. Infants receive necessary medical attention and therapy services while in the NICU but are often discharged without a plan of care for continued services. NICU follow up programs (NFUs) strive to close the gap in services by providing immediate follow up post NICU discharge for the infants and their caregivers. However, occupational therapists (OTs) remain inconsistently consulted in these programs, creating potential for missed opportunities to provide the best possible health outcomes for these fragile infants. This …

The Potential Of Virtual Reality In Social Skills Training For Autism: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Adoption Of Virtual Reality In Occupational Therapy Practice, Vineeta Pandey, Lori Vaughn Jul 2021

The Potential Of Virtual Reality In Social Skills Training For Autism: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Adoption Of Virtual Reality In Occupational Therapy Practice, Vineeta Pandey, Lori Vaughn

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Impairments in social functioning greatly hinder children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from responding appropriately and adapting to various social situations. As a result, individuals with ASD get fewer opportunities for social inclusion, physical well-being, and forming interpersonal relationships. Virtual reality (VR) has been studied extensively in this area, where a large body of evidence shows that VR is a promising tool for social skills training (SST) in individuals with ASD. With the flexibility and projected effectiveness that VR offers, it can provide more opportunities to learn and practice strategies for recognizing daily challenges that involve forming social …

The final versions were administered with 26 bilingual English-Arabic speakers. Non-Pharmaceutical Methods For Pain Management: An Occupational Therapist’S Perspective On Chronic Pain, Alison L. Brown

Student Capstone Papers

Typically pharmaceuticals are the first intervention for chronic pain but in a world where there is an opioid crisis, and chronic pain rates rising, is there more to be done? A non-pharmaceutical approach to chronic pain management can be addressed through occupational therapy. Occupational therapists are specialized to handle these types of interventions. This capstone provides evidence to support the use of aquatic therapy, adaptive equipment, adaptive strategies, fitness-based programs, and ergonomics for a non-pharmaceutical approach in occupational therapy.

Addressing The Educational Needs Of Occupational Therapists Regarding Sexuality In An Acute Care Setting, Hannah Burleigh Apr 2019

Addressing The Educational Needs Of Occupational Therapists Regarding Sexuality In An Acute Care Setting, Hannah Burleigh

Occupational Therapy: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Despite the knowledge that sexuality is an important factor of well-being for individuals with disabilities, occupational therapists (OTs) continue to under-address this topic with clients (McGrath & Sakellariou, 2016). Additional education on sexuality may help OTs improve their knowledge and confidence in discussing and addressing sexuality with clients during intervention. The purpose of this study is to determine the educational needs of occupational therapists working in acute care who are alumnus of Elizabethtown College to promote the discussion of sexuality in practice. The research questions of the project are: 1) Do OTs in acute care educate clients on sexuality? 2) …
