A Comparison Of Strength Improvement On Free Weights And The Universal Centurion, David J. Davies
A Comparison Of Strength Improvement On Free Weights And The Universal Centurion, David J. Davies
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to investigate the comparative effectiveness of free weights and the Universal Centurion in improving muscular strength. The subjects were twenty-two male students enrolled at Loma Linda University in La Sierra, California. Subjects were divided into two experimental groups, one training with free weights and the other with the Universal Centurion. The bench press exercise was utilized as both the exercise medium for the eight-week training period and also as the testing medium for the pre- and post-tests.
Pre- and post-test differences between the two groups were compared by an analysis of covariance. Results of the analysis …
The Effect Of Dextrose Ingestion On Cardiovascular Endurance, Judith M. Axford
The Effect Of Dextrose Ingestion On Cardiovascular Endurance, Judith M. Axford
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of dextrose on cardiovascular endurance. The subjects were nineteen male students enrolled at Loma Linda University in Riverside, California. The subjects were exercised to their maximum while being tested on the treadmill.· Subjects were each tested twice. Thirty minutes before exercising, they ingested one hundred grams of dextrose for one test and ten ounces of sugar-free Kool-aid for the second test. The difference in exhaustion times was then recorded.
The data indicated that dextrose ingestion decreased exhaustion time on the treadmill. Subjects were able to exercise for a longer period of time …
Effects Of A Heating Compress On Self-Reported Sore Throat Following Endotracheal Intubation For Anesthesia, Takiko Nemoto
Effects Of A Heating Compress On Self-Reported Sore Throat Following Endotracheal Intubation For Anesthesia, Takiko Nemoto
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the heating compress on self-reported sore throat following endotracheal intubation.
The null hypothesis stated that a heating compress to the throat would have no significant (alpha = 0.05) effect on the reduction of self-reported postoperative sore throat following endotracheal intubation for anesthesia. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research design was implemented in the study. Subjects who met the criteria for the study were divided randomly into an experimental and control group by coin toss.
The data were analyzed for differences between the groups at the 0.05 level of significance. Frequency distributions, …

Developing Local Educational Agency Participation In An Augmentative Communication Model Program, Myrna M. Fisher
Developing Local Educational Agency Participation In An Augmentative Communication Model Program, Myrna M. Fisher
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Department of Speech and Language Development / Blissymbolics Resource Centre at Lorna Linda University Medical Center is proposing to provide a comprehensive Augmentative Communication Model Program (ACMP) which will serve non-vocal severely physically handicapped (NVSPH) students in the Inland Empire area. The model program would offer a trans-disciplinary team approach to the assessment of each student for appropriate selection, fitting, modification and continuing evaluation of communication prostheses designed to meet individual needs. It is felt that these services are vital to the establishment of appropriate educational programs for NVSPH students as mandated by Public Law 94-142 and implemented in …
Cold For Relief Of Postoperative Limitation Of Activity Due To Incisional Pain, Haroldine Roberts
Cold For Relief Of Postoperative Limitation Of Activity Due To Incisional Pain, Haroldine Roberts
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was concerned with testing the effectiveness of cold to aid the cholecystectomy patient in performing certain selected activities usually inhibited by incisional pain.
Available references of the effects of cold on the abdominal area were studied to formulate a method of approach as no previous methodology was found in the literature.
The experimental method of research was used on a sample of 18 cholecystectomy patients meeting the criteria for the study, independent variable for the 10 patients in the experimental the application of cold over the closed incision, plastic bag covered with one thickness of towel was used …
Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley
Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was conducted in four convalescent facilities using fourteen CVA patients with body scheme disturbances. The study was done to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of light touch sensory stimulation as supplied by fast brushing to the skin dermatomes C 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the affected arms would increase the scores of the subjects in the experimental group.
Patients were assigned via a random process to the experimental or control groups if, upon taking the MacDonald Test of Body Scheme, they obtained a score of 39 or below. Subjects in the experimental group received …
A Study Of Air Temperatures Within Croupettes, Mabel Starkey Pittendrigh
A Study Of Air Temperatures Within Croupettes, Mabel Starkey Pittendrigh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was conducted to find the variations in air temperature which occur within Croupettes during treatment of infants and small children with respiratory infections, and to discover some of the factors which influence change of air temperature. Fifty children, two months to three years of age, all of whom suffered respiratory illness and all of whom received Croupette therapy were included in the study. Data were collected over a test period of two hours and fifteen minutes for each child. The parallel group technique was used in analysis of data. Conclusions drawn were not conclusive because they were …

The Applicability Of Values Clarification To Cardiac Patient Education, Bonnie Berger, Vilma Raetting
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the applicability of the value clarifying approach as an additional educational method to assist the chronic heart patient to examine his life style, establish some priorities, and implement changes in his life style in light of his disease condition and the limitations it imposes.
In an experimental study 20 male and female, medical and surgical cardiac patients participated in an educational program involving 8 value clarifying sessions.
