A 60-year-old farmer died when the tractor he was operating rolled over on top of him. The victim was attempting to hook up a camper to a tractor in order to pull it to a paved roadway. Having recently sold the camper, the farmer, assisted by the buyer, was preparing to remove it from the farmer's property.

The victim, driving a tractor which was equipped with a front end loader, pulled forward past the tongue of the camper in order to line up the tractor draw bar with the camper tongue. The ground sloped more than one-half inch per foot …

A 58-year-old part-time farmer, on route to his home, was killed when the tractor he was operating ran off the road and overturned. The victim was traveling west on State Route 32 at approximately 1:15 pm on Saturday, May 21, 1994. The victim had just completed plowing a neighbor's vegetable garden and was driving the half mile home to his farm at the time of the incident. A 51-year-old male self-employed logger/farmer was preparing to unload logs at a sawmill. The load consisted of about 18 logs, 10-22" in diameter and 8-12 feet long. The load had been secured by 2 binders (chains) to the back of a Chevrolet flatbed single-axle truck. The forward of the 2 chains had been removed by the victim. As the second chain was loosened, a log from the top rolled off the truck striking the victim. The victim was crushed by the weight of the log. On Sunday May 22, 1994, a 54-year-old part-time farmer died when the tractor he was operating rolled over, pinning him under water. The victim was pulling a wagon on which two children and one adult were riding on their way to the farmer's fishing pond. As the tractor approached the pond down a 14 degree slope, it began to slide on the loose ground. The tractor turned 180 degrees on the bank of the pond, then turned over into 4.5 feet of water. A 51-year-old male demolition foreman (the victim) died from head injuries sustained when he fell through a hole in a flat roof to a concrete floor. At about 3:25 pm the victim was on the roof to retrieve a four by eight sheet of 3/4" plywood to be used at another location on the plant site. After moving the plywood, partially exposing the hole, the victim fell 35 feet to a concrete floor. There were no witnesses to the fall. Prevalence Of Fatty Liver In Japanese Children Ages 4 To 12 Years Old : Relationship To Obesity : An Epidemiological Ultrasonographic Survey, Kunihiko Tominaga

The prevalence of fatty liver disease in children is not well established and its relationship to childhood obesity is poorly defined. The present study of 810 northern Japanese school-aged children (4-12 years old), determined the prevalence of fatty liver and its relationship to gender and degree of obesity. Diagnosis of fatty liver was assessed by real-time ultrasonography.

RESULTS: 1. The overall prevalence of fatty liver is 2.6 %. 2. Fatty liver prevalence is higher for boys (3.4 %) than for girls (1.8 %), although not statistically significant (P = 0.15). 3. Fatty liver occurs in children as young as 6 …

Most research on health behavior change programs examines their effectiveness in producing initial behavior changes, but fails to evaluate long-term maintenance of those changes. This study examined the effectiveness of the Cooper Wellness Program (CWP) in Dallas, Texas, in promoting maintenance of lifestyle behavior changes for one year or longer in the areas of diet, exercise, and stress management.

The CWP offers an intensive live-in lifestyle behavior modification program in four-, seven-, or 13-day formats. Data were collected from 223 individuals who attended the CWP between January, 1989, to February, 1992. The study addressed the following areas: 1) long-term maintenance …

Caffeine And Nicotine : A Review Of Their Combined Use, Interactive Effects And The Impact Of Caffeine Abstinence On Tobacco Cessation And Withdrawal, John A. Swanson

There is good epidemiologic support to suggest a strong significant relationship between coffee consumption and smoking. In six epidemiological studies reviewed and analyzed, 86.4% of smokers consumed coffee versus 77.2% of nonsmokers. Seventeen experimental studies suggest that the phannacologic effect of caffeine in coffee may be partially but not totally responsible for the relationship. The behavioral relationship appears to be supported by conditioning, a reciprocal interaction (caffeine intake increases anxiety/arousal - nicotine decreases it), and combined effects of third variables (e.g., stress, alcohol).

In abstinent smokers, caffeine plasma levels increase, remain elevated for as long as six months and may …

This study examines the effects of primary health care education efforts in reducing the disease case rates of acute respiratory infections, diarrhoea, malnutrition and measles in a rural Ugandan population between 1986 and 1991.

The intervention, a health education program offered by the Kiyeyi Health Center staff, consisted of a 12-week intensive training for community health workers and traditional birth attendants. Follow-up and supervision took place at regular intervals and continuing education was arranged every other year. This study focused upon physician/patient interaction as it pertains to patient involvement in personal health-care planning decision making, and self-care. The study was a multi-intervention trial that allowed for testing the effectiveness of two instruments used separately or simultaneously, in combination. Participants were 73 female patients, ages 41 to 76, diagnosed with essential hypertension and requiring medication for control.

This issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describes the experience of one adolescent sexuality program, Gente Joven in Mexico. Gente Joven began by acknowledging reality: that the problems related to teenage sexuality will not go away simply by denying their existence. Along the way Gente Joven learned, and is continuing to learn, many lessons about how to build a successful program for adolescents. Here they share their experiences and the Afterword explores in greater depth one particular issue that Gente Joven has identified as its next major challenge: re-examining their work with young people from a gender perspective.

Since 1975, a large number of Vietnamese refugees have settled in Australia. They can be recognised as a distinct cultural group within our society. However, little research has focused upon the health practices and beliefs of these people. This is a study of elderly Vietnamese refugees who have previously been identified as maintaining a great adherence to traditional values and behaviours. The aim of the research is to describe the health practices and beliefs of elderly Vietnamese refugees. Medication adherence is an important part of effective therapy for gastrointestinal disease. Theory has suggested that the more involved the individual is in their care the more adherent they will be to their medication regime. The Impact Of An Incentive/Competition Program On Participation And Smoking Cessation Among High Risk Smokers At The Worksite, Dyann M. Matson

This study compared the effectiveness of a multicomponent smoking cessation/reduction program (”M") at one worksite (N = 81), with the same program plus incentives and team competition ("I") at a second worksite (N = 68). Incentives were discontinued at six months. A third worksite (N = 36) received a traditional smoking cessation program ("T').

The "I" program attracted a higher percentage of hourly (blue-collar) smokers (18.5%) compared to the "M" program (9.3%), or the "T" program (7.9%). Incentives with competition were also effective for improving abstinence for as long as 6 months (41%) compared to the "M" program (23%), and …
