Occupational stress is costly in terms of human suffering and impaired organizational effectiveness. Occupational stress involves the interface between the individual worker and the work environment. The purpose of the study was to analyze the fit between motivational style and the type of job demands as a contributing factor in developing occupational stress symptoms. A literature review of occupational stress models was conducted. The six models compared and contrasted included the Person-Environment fit model (French, Rodgers, & Cobb, 1974), Integrative Transactional Model (Schuler, 1982), Organizational Stress Models (Ivancevich & Matteson, 1987; Parker & DeCotiis, 1983), Facet Analysis Model (Beehr & …

Religious beliefs and behaviors are multidimensional and they profoundly determine the ways we respond to health and illness, suffering and death. Researchers have designed numerous scales to measure different dimensions of religious commitment, beliefs and behaviors. A thorough review of the literature has shown general relationships between religion and health, but no researcher has developed an instrument measuring dimensions of religious commitment specifically relevant to health behaviors.

Process Of Health Care Decision Making Among Khmer Immigrants, Barbara Frye

This qualitative study examined the congruence between health beliefs and behavior as reported by 30 Cambodian (Khmer) refugee women in Southern California. Utilizing in-home interviewing in the Khmer language, data was gathered on 226 illness episodes occurring among 157 family members over an eight-month span. Informants reported a strong maternal role in health care decision making with all ages of children. Adult decision making demonstrated an individualistic pattern. Causes of illness were attributed primarily to humeral imbalances and illness avoidance behavior reflected these beliefs. Treatment was a blend of scientific and traditional medicine. Concerns have been expressed for the ability of some vegetarian diets to support normal growth of children. Animal protein or meat intake showed a positive relationship to attained height in children from developing countries. In this study, the relationship between meat intake/vegetarian status and physical growth was investigated in children living in California.

Height and weight were collected on 2,272 Caucasian children aged 6-18 years attending Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) or public schools who participated in a two year longitudinal study. The purpose of this study was to determine the general Job satisfaction level of direct care mental health employees and to determine any significant differences in Job satisfaction levels between fulltime and part-time employees. The sample consisted of 60 direct care mental health employees In a residential treatment center in Virginia. There were 28 respondents for a 47% response rate.

The 20 item Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Short Form> and a demographic questionnaire were the survey instruments used. It is the purpose of this thesis to show how computerized training can be used in helping to create an effective safety program. Through example, a complete electrical safety program will be developed for workers whose jobs do not pertain directly to electrical installations, but who use them through the course of their daily work activities. A computer-aided instruction module on electrical safety will be developed for presentation to workers on an IBM compatible computer.

Hysterectomy is the second (after cesarean section) most commonly performed major surgical procedure in the United States today.1 About [650,000 American women will have hysterectomies in 1989. Thirty-seven percent of all US women will have had a hysterectomy by the time they reach age 60. The number of hysterectomies increased dramatically Born 1965 to 1975, but then leveled off and decreased to the present level of about 7 per 1000 women. Sex and morals have often been factors in custody disputes. Courts have felt that giving custody of children to homosexual parents would create an environment not in the best interest of the child. Many mental health professionals argue that these decisions have been based on prejudice and homophobia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate research on the sexual orientation of children raised by homosexual parents and review data on the mental/psychosexual health of these children. During the selection and retention process in a medical record technology program, it is advantageous to identify those students who will fulfill the program's course requirements, as well as subsequently pass the accreditation examination. Graduates of such a program at Wbstern Kentucky University were studied to identify these demoaraphic and academic indicators. Using a stepwise multiple regression analysis, the variables of high school grade point average (GPA), college GPA, and composite ACT score were found to be significantly related to medical record GPA. The purpose of this study was to examine printed educational materials on five specific genetic disabilities and evaluate them for appropriateness of reading level and for inclusion of several specific issues related to the adequacy of the literature. Publicly available literature was analyzed using the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula and content analysis to estimate readability and to test for the presence of a definition of the disorder, a description of the basic genetics of the disorder and its symptomology, references to support groups and references for further information.

The data indicate that a definition of the disorder was included in 85% …

Various methods of measuring the Q-angle are reported in the literature. The reliability of these measurement methods has not been established. The purpose of this study was to examine the intra- and inter-tester reliability of a method for measuring the Q-angle using a goniometer. The measurement method was performed on 40 normal, healthy subjects who volunteered to participate in the study. There were 27 female subjects and 13 male subjects.

Two physical therapists (Tester 1 and Tester 2) took repeated Q-angle measurements. Measurements were taken on the same day with an interval of five to 10 minutes between measurements. Measurements …

We present the case of a young man with acute monocytic leukemia (French-American-British classification:M5) and systemic hyperfibrinolysis with severe bleeding. Although fibrinolysis is usually mild and secorulary to disseminated intravascular coagulation, its role as a primary and dominant factor in rare cases of leukemia warrants that its presence be sought as a cause of abnormal bleeding. Decreased serum plasminogen and increased serum plasmin determined by synthetic substrate assay and a negative protamine paracoagulation test are crucial findings. Use of high-dose epsilon-aminocaproic acid was effective in treating this complication. A transient increase in fibrinolytic activity coincident with the early effect of …

Primary coccidioidal disease is rarely diagnosed in the midwest in the nonimmunocompromised host. Since coast-to-coast travel is common today, many patients may become exposed to Coccidioides immitis while traveling in endemic areas. We present a case of acute coccidioidal pleural effusion in a Michigan woman who had recently visited northeastern Arizona. Her travel history was the single most important factor in the eventual diagnosis of coccidioidal pleural effusion.

Early diagnosis and accurate, biologically meaningful classification of prostate neoplasia remain important goals. The relation of evolving clinicopathologic concepts of histologic appearances to potential tumor progression is a major advance in classification of prostatic neoplasia. The criteria for recognizing incidental or "occult" stage A-l adenocarcinomas remain problematic in diagnosis, and focal neoplasms with little or no propensity to progression must be differentiated from cancers with a high likelihood of aggressive behavior. Current histologic grading systems in classifying prostate adenocarcinoma accurately identify two cancer subsets: 1) focal well differentiated tumors which rarely progress, and 2) diffuse poorly differentiated tumors which invariably …

Urothelial neoplasia is a unique cancer in that it consists of a spectrum of tumors with different biologic behaviors. The most common urothelial neoplasm is the low grade superficial papillary carcinoma or papilloma which may recur numerous times but does not result in significant morbidity or mortality. A variant of the superficial papillary carcinoma, which represents approximately 10% of the tumors, is the noninvasive papillary neoplasm which progresses to a less differentiated invasive transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). To assess the effect of cyclosporine therapy on the rate of renal function recovery after renal transplantation, patients with no clinical evidence of rejection and who were treated with either cyclosporine or azathioprine in addition to steroid therapy were studied (n = 74). Of the patients with immediate renal function (n = 57), those receiving organs from living, related donors had a faster recovery rate of glomerular filtration than patients with cadaveric grafts (azathioprine, 15 ± 2 versus 7 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.0001; cyclosporine, 14 ± 3 versus 6 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.001). We have identified six cases of quinidine-induced immune thrombocytopenia based on clinical evidence and in association with elevated amounts of platelet surface IgG. The degree of thrombocytopenia did not correlate with severity of clinical symptoms, nor did it predict the amount of IgG on the platelet surface. Three of the patients recovered promptly after drug discontinuation alone whereas the other patients received additional corticosteroid therapy. The clinical presentation, mode of diagnosis, and therapeutic considerations in the treatment of drug-induced thrombocytopenia are discussed.
