This institutional ethnography research explored how women with rheumatoid arthritis, who are mothers, and of employable age, go about their daily lives given their social context. The social context for this research was Austria, which is characterized by social policies based on familialism and an emphasis on employment. This context may open up various resources and possibilities about what women can do and actually do in their daily lives, and thus, directs attention to the situated nature of human occupation.

The prevalence of shift work is increasing in the general population. There is conflicting epidemiologic evidence on the association between shift work and cardiovascular disease. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that measured shift work-cardiovascular disease associations. We screened 12,350 articles and identified 35 eligible studies. The pooled risk ratios (RR) for myocardial infarction, all coronary events and ischemic stroke were 1.23 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.15 to 1.31, I² = 0), 1.24 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.39, I² = 85%) and 1.05 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.09, I² = 0), respectively. Frequent fast-food consumption is associated with weight gain therefore it is hypothesized that relative availability of fast-food is a risk factor for obesity. This thesis examined the association between the neighbourhood-level density of fast-food outlets and adult body mass index (BMI) in Canada. Population-based data on BMI and socio-economic variables from the 2008 Canadian Community Health Survey [CCHS] and selected neighbourhood-level socio-economic data from 2006 Canadian Census were merged with a commercial database containing geographic locations of all restaurants in Canada. The purpose of the study was to assess the physical activity (PA) levels, sedentary behaviours, and PA-related barriers and facilitators of a sample of Latino children in London, Canada. Forty boys and 34 girls (mean age = 11.4 years) completed questionnaires related to PA levels, sedentary behaviours, and PA-related barriers and facilitators, and 64 of these children wore an accelerometer for 4 consecutive days. Children spent an average of 53 minutes per day in moderate-to-vigorous PA. The average daily sedentary time for participants was 8.6 hours, and subjective measures revealed that participants spent 3.8 hours per day in front of …

Background: The relationship between diet quality and obesity is unknown in Canadian adults.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to examine the association of diet quality with obesity in Canadian adults.

Methods: Data were taken from the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey. Three indices were constructed using diet recall data: Diet Quality Index (DQI), Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Glycemic Index (GI). Obesity was measured with body-mass index. Various confounders were also controlled. Latent-class and ordered probit modeling were used to investigate the association between diet quality and obesity.

The overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine the planning, implementation, and formative evaluation of a community-based food literacy program for youth. Article 1 provided a summary of the community-based cooking program for at-risk youth. Objectives included the provision of applied food literacy and cooking skills education augmented with fieldtrips to local farms. Eight at-risk youth (five girls and three boys, mean age = 14.6) completed the intervention. Post intervention, five of eight participants completed in-depth interviews about their experiences.

Fetal undernutrition is a major factor in the pathophysiology of fetal growth restriction (FGR) in many species, including humans. Our hypothesis is that mild maternal nutrient restriction (MNR) in a mouse provides a clinically relevant model to study FGR mechanisms and long-term effects similar to humans and the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) predisposition. A MNR mouse model of FGR was developed by feeding mothers 70% normal daily caloric intake during E6.5 to E18.5 gestation. Significant reduction in fetal weight and fetal liver and lung weights with less impact on brain weight resulted, similar to asymmetric human FGR. …

Up to half of mothers of children with epilepsy are at increased risk for clinical depression and symptoms of maternal depression are associated with poorer health outcomes in these children. Background: Clinicians frequently search PubMed to guide patient care. This study investigated the factors that impact successful searching and the utility of PubMed search filters.

Methods: A random sample of nephrologists was surveyed between 2008 and 2010; 160 valid responses were received (72% response rate). One group of 60 respondents was presented with the same two clinical questions, while the other 100 were each presented with a unique clinical question. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop an understanding of, and draw attention to, the health and service access issues faced by trans (transgender, transsexual, or transitioned) Ontarians. This thesis is based on the Trans PULSE Project, a community-based research (CBR) initiative whose goal is to improve the health of trans people. Data collection was carried out between May 2009 and April 2010 using a quantitative survey. Trans participants were recruited through respondent-driven sampling (RDS), a network-based sampling method developed for the recruitment of hidden populations.
