OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence of acute and long-term consequences of suboptimal experiences of care, standardized measurements across countries remain limited, particularly for postabortion care. We aimed to determine the proportion of women reporting negative experiences of care for abortion complications, identify risk factors, and assess the potential association with complication severity.

METHODS: Data were sourced from the WHO Multi-Country Survey on Abortion for women who received facility-based care for abortion complications in 11 African countries. We measured women's experiences of care with eight questions from an audio computer-assisted self-interview related to respect, communication, and support. Multivariable generalized estimating equations were used …

Shifts In Unaids Ethics Guidance And Implications For Ethics Review Of Preventive Hiv Vaccine Trials., Catherine Slack, Paul Ndebele, Mary Allen, Jessica Salzwedel

Global Health Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: A major change in the ethics framework for preventive HIV vaccine trials worldwide is the release of the UNAIDS 2021 ethical considerations in HIV prevention trials. This new guidance comes at an exciting time when there are multiple HIV vaccine efficacy trials in the field. Research Ethics Committees (RECs) or Institutional Review Boards are a most likely audience for these guidelines. Our objective is to highlight shifts in ethics recommendations from the earlier 2012 UNAIDS guidance.

DISCUSSION: We review recommendations related to four key issues, namely standard of prevention, post-trial access to safe and effective vaccines, enrolment of adolescents …

How Medicaid And States Could Better Meet Health Needs Of Persons Experiencing Homelessness., Sana Charania Nov 2021

How Medicaid And States Could Better Meet Health Needs Of Persons Experiencing Homelessness., Sana Charania

Student Works

An estimated 580 000 people experienced homelessness on any single night in the United States in 2020. This article argues that, to address these persons' unmet needs, Medicaid should collaborate with clinicians and state programs to provide permanent supportive housing and housing support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Access to shelter can improve health outcomes for individuals experiencing homelessness and reduce overall health care costs.

Facilitating Aging In Place And Community By Empowering Participation In Society: A Mixed Methods Study On The Co-Development Of A Theory Of Change With Suburban-Dwelling Older Adults, Emily Balog

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Baby boomers are steadily aging in America and represent an increased population in nearly every sector. In suburban communities today, older adults make up 51% of the population. Ninety-five percent of all older adults live in community settings and have expressed a desire to avoid costly institutionalization and to remain in their homes and communities, also called aging in place. Older adults in moderate income suburban communities are increasingly at a higher risk for institutionalization should their health or finances decline as the access to their wealth is within the home in which they dwell. This process …

Nutrition, A Tenet Of Lifestyle Medicine But Not Medicine?, Leigh A. Frame Jun 2021

Nutrition, A Tenet Of Lifestyle Medicine But Not Medicine?, Leigh A. Frame

Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications

Nutrition is a foundation of health and one of six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. The importance of nutrition in clinical care is now widely recognized by health care professionals and the public. However, clinicians are not comfortable counselling their patients on nutrition due to inadequate or lack of training, leaving a significant need in patient care. This gap can be closed with evidence-based curricula in medical schools and in the trainings of other health care professionals. This communication presents the current state of nutrition knowledge in health care, emphasizing nutrition education for physicians, and presents a model of how pre- …

Medicare Support For Dental And Podiatry Graduate Medical Education Programs., Candice Chen, Yoonkyung Chung, Geoffrey Broadbent, Elizabeth Mertz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Importance: Oral health care faces ongoing workforce challenges that affect patient access and outcomes. While the Medicare program provides an estimated $14.6 billion annually in graduate medical education (GME) payments to teaching hospitals, including explicit support for dental and podiatry programs, little is known about the level or distribution of this public investment in the oral health and podiatry workforce.

Objective: To examine Medicare GME payments to teaching hospitals for dental and podiatry residents from 1998 to 2018, as well as the distribution of federal support among states, territories, and the District of Columbia.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional …

About 80% of the factors affecting health outcomes lay outside of the domain of traditional clinical care.1 Public Health 3.0, the next level of public health practice, expands the reach of public health practitioners to address upstream factors traditionally outside the scope of health initiatives, such as housing affordability and educational attainment.2 Public Health 3.0 calls upon local health departments (LHDs) to be the core of this effort by creating impactful change through intentional cross-sectoral collaborations.2 The Resilience Catalyst (RC) program, designed by the Center for Community Resilience at the George Washington University, is being used to guide Public Health …

GW Research Showcase 2021-2024

Purpose: Maternal micronutrient deficiencies occurring during periconceptional, pregnancy, and postpartum periods are a leading cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes globally. The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are a set of reference values used to assess and guide nutrient intakes of healthy individuals. However, the current DRIs for pregnancy and lactation may be limited in their methods and included populations. The present study analyzed the current DRIs for their inclusion of pregnant women and geographic representativeness. Methods: Meta-research methods were applied to the DRI report for vitamins B6, B12, folate, and choline in four steps: search, screening, full-text data extraction, and data …
