During the researcher's experience as a public health nurse, she became aware of two types of depressed women. The first type is the withdrawn, weeping, self-isolating woman while the second type cited numerous physical complaints which prevented her from caring for her home and children. Both exhibited non-responsive behavior to her children's needs.

Mastectomies And Their Effect On Sexual Behavior, Irene Marian Ellicott

Sixteen women who had had hysterectomies and eighteen women who had had mastectomies were mailed the Oregon Sex Inventory to see if any significant differences in sexual behavior occurred before or after surgery.

The mastectomy group showed a greater degree of change in their sexual behavior than the hysterectomy group. The mastectomy group reported a decrease in the importance of the breast during the sexual act after surgery and a decrease in their desire for intercourse after surgery. The hysterectomy group reported lowered sexual satisfaction after surgery.

The changes reported in this study although relatively small are statistically significant. The …

A total of 243 Mental Hygiene and Introductory Psychology students completed ratings of adjustment in January of 1976. In May of the same year, 65 of the original Mental Hygiene students and 110 of the Introductory students completed the post-testing under one of four procedures. A group of seven severely and profoundly retarded adults from a sheltered workshop program were trained in cooperative play (basketball skills and hand clapping) using social and edible reinforcement and fading procedures. The generalization effects of the training on non-reinforced (undesirable) behaviors in an extratraining setting was investigated. A reversal technique in which the reinforcement was temporarily withdrawn demonstrated the reliable functioning of the training procedures. Independent observers recorded target behaviors during five phases: Baseline; Training; Generalization Testing; Extinction; Generalization Testing. The rate of undesirable behaviors decreased significantly in the extra-training setting (activity room) following the training phase. The findings …

This study compared aversion therapy, hypnotherapy, and a combined method. It was predicted that the treatment of imagined behaviour would generalize to overt behaviours. Individuals were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the aversion group with shock contingent on imagined behaviour, and finally the combined group which consisted of traditional hypnotherapy in combination with aversion therapy. The treatments were contained on separate cassettes with each subject receiving his appropriate cassette. Subjects met in groups of 3-5 individuals, twice a week for three weeks. Individuals acted as their own controls through the establishment of a pre-treatment baseline of smoking rate. …

The purpose of the study was to compare two mild punishment techniques, positive practice overcorrection and time-out, for decreasing talking out and out of seat behavior in relatively normal children. Other variables considered were the practicality of administering positive practice and time-out, the generalization of the technique to other problem behaviors, and emotional side effects resulting from the administration of the techniques. A study was conducted to examine the pretest - posttest change scores on the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale between an experimental group and control group of geriatric subjects. From a total of 22 subjects tested, eleven were randomly chosen for the experimental group and eleven were randomly chosen for the control group. This study examined the completion and noncompletion of methadone detoxification of two groups of subjects enrolled in a heroin treatment program. Twenty-six subjects who had been addicted to heroin for a minimum of two years and were receiving methadone were randomly assigned to an experimental and control group. The experimental group was assigned a series of relaxation training sessions. Each subject, at the outset, was receiving 18-22 mg of methadone daily. Two counselors conducted the relaxation training which began at the 18-22 mg dosage level.

At the present stage of development, the varied literature on runaway children and adolescents provides little basis for firm conclusions. The apparent heterogeneity of runaways has yet to be fully realized in conceptual or research attempts, although efforts in that direction are beginning. There appears to be little utility or meaning in assigning runaway behavior solely to categories of delinquency or psychopathology. The influence of methylphenidate hydrochloride injections on six male Charles River rats displaying schedule induced polydipsia was examined in this study. Bar pressing, licking, and water consumption were measured during a total of 63 daily one hour trials conducted with a variable interval 60-second schedule of bar pressing for pellets with water constantly available. The polydipsic response was acquired by subjects during the first 28 trials. Subjects were then divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental subjects recieved a 1 mg/kg injection of methylphenidate prior to regular trials 29-49 and extinction trials 50-63. Control subjects were injected with a …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb

The review of the literature discussed loneliness in general and specified three seperate forms of loneliness; social, psychic, and existential. The relationships between loneliness, social interaction, and pathology were discussed. 139 clients were given the Belcher Extended Loneliness Scale - Revised prior to therapy. They were assigned one of six diagnostic categories to determine loneliness score (LS), diagnostic, and sex interactions. An analysis of variance found a significant difference (p <.0001) between the diagnostic categories’ LS. The schizophrenic’s and the neurotic’s LS s were significantly higher (<.05) than the remaining categories. The males had significantly (p <.036) higher LS than the females. It was also hypothesized that the degree of loneliness would increase the lower the diagnostic developmental level. The hypothesized order was not consistent with the results. Further research was recommended.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if relaxation instruction and electromyographic (E.M.G.) feedback would reduce chronic low back pain. A secondary aim was to determine if the locus of control variable as defined by Rotter would influence the results obtained.

Fourteen non-hospitalized subjects with chronic low back pain, meeting the criteria of this study became the sample group. Hospitalization was assessed as imposing stress on a child which may result in negative behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a planned preadmission orientation in decreasing negative behavior after hospitalization.

Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.

This paper investigated whether retrieval may be facilitated by a process in which one learns to retrieve in a manner analogous to learning to learn as demonstrated by both Harlow's (1965) work with monkeys and Postman's and Keppel's (1966; Keppel, Postman, & Zavortnik, 1968) work in verbal recall. While the major focus of this study was to demonstrate this phenomenon, and the analogies cited suggest that the process will remain unspecified, an attempt was made to indicate and analyze the processes involved in the facilitation.

The purpose of the present study was to cross-validate the Terminator-Remainer subscale of the Social History Questionnaire (Jachim, 1972). The subjects were 72 clients from a mental health clinic. Two groups were used in the study (N = 72 and N = 36). Both groups were divided into Terminators and Remainers.

A point biserial correlation between the score on the Terminator-Remainer subscale and the criterion groups was significant (N = 72: rpb = .24, p < .05; N = 36: rpb = .38, p < .05). Predictive validity was established.
