In modern society, the overwhelming cultural narrative proclaims that stress is detrimental to health and should be limited and avoided at all costs. However, recent research has demonstrated that it is one’s stress mindset, rather than their stress level, that determines the psychological and physiological outcomes. The thesis exhibition I create will be an installation that is centered around a fictional narrative starring a vivacious mental patient, and containing the people, places, and things in which she interacts with in her life at the hospital. As the audience moves through the gallery, they are immersed into the main character's world, seeing and analyzing the rooms and objects through the eyes and mind of the protagonist. While religious involvement, particularly intrinsic religiosity or spirituality, has shown a significant inverse relationship with depression, this relationship is complex and multifaceted and several decades of study have yet to reveal a clear pattern. This work is a survey of the current research on the etiology and symptomology of depression and its interaction with spirituality. This work is testing a new model that views the effects of depression on spirituality as a function of an individual’s perceived relationship with God. A survey was distributed to a sample of 135 evangelical Christians. Depressed persons made up approximately 16% of the sample. …

Depressed individuals have been found to exhibit memory deficits on tasks that require effortful processing. They have also been found to remember negative materials better than their nondepressed cohorts. While these findings are well-documented, there have been few studies designed to examine how and why these differences in recall occur. The present study examined prose passage and word list recall in depressed and nondepressed college students. Processing times and structure of recall were also examined to assist in determining how material was processed and remembered.
