Cruising For Truckers On Highways And The Internet: Sexual Networks And Infection Risk, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Mona Shattell, Jennie Kronenfeld, Donna Smith, Sarah Stanton

Mona Shattell

Empirical evidence on the heterosexual partnerships of long-haul truckers suggests connections among occupational stressors, substance misuse, structural factors, and risk for sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Yet the potential risks associated with same-sex partnerships of truckers and truckchasers (men who specifically cruise for truckers) remain largely unknown. Drawing from diverse sources as well as primary and secondary data from 173 truckers and “truckchasers,” we discuss how trucking and cruising contexts, in conjunction with Internet fora, jointly create a risk-enabling environment for truckers and their sex contacts. Findings point toward an elusive but extensive sexual network that spans across the Internet …

This article presents an assessment of 25 trucking work settings designed to examine whether the environmental attributes of these settings influence eating patterns of truckers who are at risk for excess weight gain. Findings corroborate evidence that these work settings represent healthy food deserts. From restaurants and vending machines to the social-information environments and their surrounding communities, only meager opportunities exist for healthful eating practices. This article aims to place underserved truckers and warehousing-sector employees firmly within the discourse of workplace health promotion and calls for multistakeholder wellness strategies that encompass the intertwined risk factors linked with the transportation work …

Assertive Community Treatment And The Physical Health Needs Of Persons With Severe Mental Illness: Issues Around Integration Of Mental Health And Physical Health, Mona Shattell, Natasha Donnelly, Anna Sheyett, Gary Cuddeback

Mona Shattell

BACKGROUND: Assertive community treatment (ACT) is characterized as a service delivery platform and represents an ideal setting in which mental health and physical health care can be integrated. OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the extent to which ACT integrates physical health care with mental health care or the challenges ACT teams experience. To address this gap, focus groups were conducted with five ACT teams in a Midwestern US state to explore how ACT teams address the physical health care needs of persons with severe mental illness. DESIGN: A qualitative study design was used. RESULTS: Three major themes emerged: ACT teams …

Infection Risk Along U.S. Highways? The Case Of A ‘Truckchaser’ Cruising For Truckers, Mona Shattell, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Richard Rothenberg, Rose Weitz, John Smith Dec 2010

Infection Risk Along U.S. Highways? The Case Of A ‘Truckchaser’ Cruising For Truckers, Mona Shattell, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Richard Rothenberg, Rose Weitz, John Smith

Mona Shattell

This article explores potential infection risks linked with trucker cruising along U.S. highways. Specifically, the article delineates the settings and social organization of trucker cruising, examines the structure of sex partnerships of truckers and cruisers, and delves into the unique database of one truckchaser who recorded 4,162 sex interactions with 2,499 different truckers during a 13-year period. Concurrent sexual partnerships of bisexual and particularly straight-identified truckers hold increased potential for amplifying infection risk as they enable pathogens to operate as bridges along disparate geographies, demographies, and epidemiologies.

Occupational Stressors And The Mental Health Of Truckers. Issues In Mental Health Nursing, Mona Shattell, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Mary Griffin

Mona Shattell

Trucking has been classified as one of the highest-risk occupations in the United States.

Occupational stress is even greater for long-haul truckers who are away from home, family, friends, and other support networks for several days or weeks at a time. Occupational stressors and the mental health of truckers was studied using data collected as part of a large multisite ethnoepidemiological study of trucker networks. Findings from the current study show that truckers face many occupational stressors including constant time pressures, social isolation, disrespectful treatment from others, driving hazards such as weather changes, traffic, and road conditions, and violence or …

Results: The most helpful people were parents and teachers; the most helpful strategies were caring behaviors and active teaching/learning strategies. Participants remembered helpful people as “giving me strategies to help me keep my …

“An Existential Place Of Pain:” The Essence Of Despair In Women, Nancy Scroggs, Mona Shattell, W. Richard Cowling Jul 2010

“An Existential Place Of Pain:” The Essence Of Despair In Women, Nancy Scroggs, Mona Shattell, W. Richard Cowling

Mona Shattell

While there is a substantive body of knowledge on depression, little is known about the experience of despair. This phenomenological study explored women’s experience of despair through qualitative interviews with 14 women ages 28 to 55 (M= 45) who self-identified as experiencing despair. Three themes emerged: “crippling and debilitating,” “there’s nothing you can do”, and “it’ll never end.” The findings suggest that women desire to have their experiences recognized and validated while simultaneously receiving acknowledgement of their ability to overcome the past and to shape their own destinies.

Worksite-Induced Morbidities Of Truck Drivers In The United States, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Mona Shattell, Michael Belzer

Mona Shattell

A critical review was conducted of social, psychological, and health science literature on the array of health risks and morbidities of truckers. Multilevel worksite-induced strains (e.g., long work hours and fatigue, shift work and sleep deprivation, postural fatigue and exposure to noise and vibration, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, and other occupational stressors) were categorized into six primary morbidities for truckers: (1) psychological and psychiatric disorders; (2) detriments resulting from disrupted biological cycles; (3) musculoskeletal disorders; (4) cancer and respiratory morbidities; (5) cardiovascular disease; and (6) risk-laden substance use and sexual practices. Elevated morbidity risks …

Review: Community-Based Participatory Research Approach To Address Mental Health In Minority Populations, Mona Shattell, Jeanne Stacciarini, Maria Coady-Madden, Brenda Wiens

Mona Shattell

In this review, a synthesis of studies employing community-based participatory research (CBPR) to address mental health problems of minorities, strengths and challenges of the CBPR approach with minority populations are highlighted. Despite the fact that minority community members voiced a need for innovative approaches to address culturally unique issues, findings revealed that most researchers continued to use the traditional methods in which they were trained. Moreover, researchers continued to view mental health treatment from a health service perspective.
