Addressing The Physical Health Challenges Impacting Young Individuals With Major Mental Illness, Ryan P. Melton
Addressing The Physical Health Challenges Impacting Young Individuals With Major Mental Illness, Ryan P. Melton
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
Research has found that individuals who suffer from major mental illness, such as schizophrenia, are dying on average 15-25 years earlier than those who do not suffer from schizophrenia.1 Many causes for this shortened lifespan are suspected. Those causes include: lack of access to health care, suicide, poverty, substance use and side effects from anti-psychotic medications. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has challenged mental health providers treating major mental illness to address this disturbing trend by promoting their “10x10” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to increase the lifespan of individuals who suffer from major …

Should ‘Risk Syndrome Of Psychosis’ Be Included In Dsm V As A Diagnosis? A Road Towards Preventive Psychiatry”, Amresh Srivastava
Amresh Srivastava
Psychiatric diagnosis has acquired a position of a quasi-legal document for mental health services and agencies working with mental health. Its utility has gone far beyond ‘clinical diagnosis for treatment’.
The concept of risk syndrome for schizophrenia has been thoroughly researched in last ten years or so. Significant advancement has been made in phenomenology, diagnostic criteria, classification, & neurobiology. The research of prodromal or at-risk or Ultra high-risk psychosis has significantly contributed to the body of knowledge of aetio-pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
The science of risk syndrome has apparently matured and its proponents are ready for its inclusion in DSM V …
Outcome, Early Intervention & Dup: The Matrix Of Research In Early Psychosis, Amresh Srivastava, Megan Johnston
Outcome, Early Intervention & Dup: The Matrix Of Research In Early Psychosis, Amresh Srivastava, Megan Johnston
Amresh Srivastava
There has been little investigation of the relationship of DUP to other long-term outcomes such as negative symptoms and cognitive functioning neither have the possible confounds of DUP been widely investigated or controlled. It is important that there should be more thorough investigations of DUP, its correlates, and the extent to which it does mediate any advantages of earlier intervention. Shorter duration of untreated psychosis was associated with greater response to antipsychotic treatment, as measured by severity of global psychopathology, positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and functional outcomes. At the time of treatment initiation, duration of initially untreated psychosis was associated …

Computer Based Training: Understanding Schizophrenia, Elli Marie Bach
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purpose of this capstone project was to research, design and implement a computer based training module for staff who work with individuals experiencing mental illness. Schizophrenia: A Concept, Haider A Naqvi
Schizophrenia: A Concept, Haider A Naqvi
Department of Psychiatry
Much of the current research-work into biological basis of mental disorders is predicted on implicit concept of disease that is less critical and sophisticated as it should be. It is remarkable, how the fundamental conceptual frame work of schizophrenia, as proposed by Professor Emil Kraepelin has stayed the same, since its inception almost 100-years ago. This review explores these issues besides highlighting alternative disease classification that suits behavioural neuroscience research.
Auditory Hallucinations And The Presence Of Depression In Chronic Schizophrenia, Julie Proctor
Auditory Hallucinations And The Presence Of Depression In Chronic Schizophrenia, Julie Proctor
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This exploratory study examined the predictive relationship among the dimensions of auditory hallucinations and the presence of depression in chronic schizophrenia. Forty seven out-patients from the Inner City Community Mental Health Service participated, all of whom had a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia and reported experiencing auditory hallucinations. The measures included the Calgary Rating Scale fur Schizophrenia, the Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale, the Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire and three questions relating to insight into auditory hallucinations from the Schedule for the Assessment of Insight-Expanded Edition. Consistent with other reports, the present study found a prevalence of depressive symptoms in over 40% …

The Hoffer And Osmond Theory And Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Robert Bray
The Hoffer And Osmond Theory And Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Robert Bray
Honors Theses
Dr. Abram Hoffer and Dr. Humphrey Osmond have formulated a biochemical theory of schizophrenia based on a defective adrenal metabolism which results in the production of neurotoxins in the schizophrenic's body. They have also developed a therapy for schizophrenia consisting of massive daily does of Vitamin B-3 (nicotinic acid) and other supplements. They detect schizophrenia by means of a chemical test (paper chromatography) and a psychological test (the Hoffer-Osmond Diagnostic test).
