Annual Research Symposium
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many universities to expand the use of videoconferencing technology to continue academic coursework. This study examines dental students’ experience with videoconferencing technology, comfort levels, and perceptions of using videoconferencing technology.
Methods: 54 out of 100 second-year dental students enrolled in a course on local anesthesia, 54 completed a survey following an online synchronous lecture given in September 2020. Survey questions asked about prior experience with videoconferencing, comfort levels, and reasons for not turning on their video (showing their face).
Results: Overall, 48.2% had little or no prior experience with videoconferencing prior to March 2020. …

Acupuncture Therapy In The Treatment Of Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Reece Bartell
Acupuncture Therapy In The Treatment Of Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Reece Bartell
Capstone Showcase
Abstract
Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition that affects the joints of the body, most commonly the knees; it has the potential to cause debilitating pain, and stiffness and decrease quality of life. The current management involves lifestyle modifications of a healthy diet and exercise as well as analgesics like NSAIDs or acetaminophen to manage symptoms. Long-term use of these medications has been associated with many side effects affecting the GI and CV system. This review analyzes the use of acupuncture therapy (I) for symptom management (O) in patients aged 60-80 years old suffering from mild to moderate …

Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates In A Primary Care Practice Using An Emr-Based Intervention, Conor Murphy, Ashley Barnes, Rukaiya Bashir, Peter Block
Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit
Objective
- Osteoporosis is defined as a T-score ≤ -2.5 on DEXA or history of fragility fracture
- Affects a significant proportion of our population over 65 with an estimated annual cost burden of $22 billion
- Only 46% of females over 65 years of age had been screened for osteoporosis at JHAP
- Our study aims to increase that percentage between July 2019 and July 2020 from 46% to 60%

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit
Aim 1: To understand the root cause(s) for gaps in statin therapy within a large ambulatory care practice.
Aim 2: To improve provider awareness of indications for statin therapy, as recommended by the ACC/AHA guidelines.
Aim 3: To increase the proportion of patients with diabetes at our practice that are on statin therapy.
The Efficacy Of Adding Eicosapentaenoic Acid To Statin Monotherapy In The Prevention Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Carlo Escudero
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a chronic medical condition caused by the buildup of plaque within the coronary artery endothelium. If left untreated it can progress to an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) which can lead to myocardial ischemia and death. Statins are lipid lowering agents used in clinical practice for the medical management of CAD. However, incidence of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events still occurs despite optimal statin therapy. Currently eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been promoted to be effective when added to statin therapy in lowering the incidence of CV events in patients with hypercholesterolemia. This paper will address …

Survey Of Primary Care Physicians’ And Pediatricians’ Competency In Identifying Prodromal Symptoms In Schizophrenia And Psychotic Disorders, Mark Shephard, Joanna Petrides Psy.D.
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
• To address whether primary care physicians and pediatricians are equipped to recognize the prodromal symptoms of psychotic disorders
• Patients of primary care physicians exhibited increased help seeking behaviors prior to schizophrenia diagnosis [1]
• Primary care physicians in numerous countries have shown a lack of sufficient knowledge related to diagnosing and treating schizophrenia [2,3,4,5,6]
• Unclear if primary care physicians in the United States are adequately trained and prepared to recognize prodromal signs of schizophrenia, and diagnose and treat a variety of psychotic disorders
