Objectives To investigate pharmacists’ herbal/nutrient weight loss complementary medicine (WLCM)practices in the context of other pharmacistweight management support practices (provision of lifestyle advice, orlistat and meal replacement treatments); and gain insight into their attitudes, recommendations, information and education needs. Methods Pharmacists from a randomly selected sample of 214 community pharmacies fromdifferent socioeconomic areas in the Greater Brisbane region, Australia, were invited to complete a survey to explore their weight management practices, with a specific focus on herbal/nutrient WLCM practices. Data collected from the sample group represented pharmacist practices within the metropolitan Greater Brisbane region. Key findings This survey achieved a …

Abstract from the 2015 ACCP Virtual Poster Symposium, May 18-19:
OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of an evidence-based guideline established for the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) at a community teaching hospital. Endpoints included length of stay (LOS) after diagnosis, mortality, direct cost, and 30-day readmission rates.
METHODS: Relevant literature was reviewed by internal medicine physicians, residents, and pharmacists to develop an internal treatment guideline for the classification and management of CDI. The guideline follows the Infectious Disease Society of America/ Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America 2010 recommendations. The hospital guideline was provided to physicians and medical residents …
Perioperative Nonopioid Agents For Pain Control In Spinal Surgery., Anna Rivkin, Mark Rivkin
Perioperative Nonopioid Agents For Pain Control In Spinal Surgery., Anna Rivkin, Mark Rivkin
Mark Rivkin
PURPOSE: Commonly used nonopioid analgesic agents that are incorporated into multimodal perioperative pain management protocols in spinal surgery are reviewed. SUMMARY: Spinal procedures constitute perhaps some of most painful surgical interventions, as they often encompass extensive muscle dissection, tissue retraction, and surgical implants, as well as prolonged operative duration. Perioperative nonopioid analgesics frequently used in multimodal protocols include gabapentin, pregabalin, acetaminophen, dexamethasone, ketamine, and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There is evidence to suggest that gabapentin is safe and effective in reducing opioid consumption and pain scores at optimal doses of 600-900 mg orally administered preoperatively. Pregabalin 150-300 mg orally perioperatively …

Exercise and physical activity are important components in both the management and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Exercise promotes multiple beneficial effects for diabetics; however, some studies have shown that when some individuals undergo an exercise program, this can cause behavioural compensatory responses. Therefore, we investigated whether an aerobic exercise program influences sedentary behavior (SB) and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in type 2 diabetics. Eight volunteers (51.1±8.2 years; 4 men) underwent an exercise program (3 d.wk-1, 50– 60% of VO2 peak, 30–60 min) for 8 weeks. SB and MVPA were measured by triaxial accelerometers pre- and post-exercise intervention. Cardiorespiratory fitness, …

Background; Melatonin is S5Tithesized in the pineal gland and is an important circadian phase marker, especially in the detennination of sleep patterns. Both temporary and pennanent abnormal sleep patterns occur in children; therefore, it is desirable to have methods for monitoring melatonin in biological fluids in the diagnosis and treatment of such disorders. Objective: The objective of the study is to develop a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the detenni¬ nation of melatonin in saliva and to apply it to monitoring salivary concentrations in children with sleep disorders. Methods: A deuterated internal standard (dy-melatonin) was added to a diluted …

Because PN administration errors occur at the point of patient contact, mistakes in this phase of the medication delivery process are less likely than other types of PN errors to be intercepted, and more likely to cause harm. Data pertaining to the incidence of errors related to PN administration are scarce. A recent survey revealed that 44% of organizations do not track PN-related medication errors and do not know where in the process errors may be happening. The literature does provide some insight into the scope of the problem, however. In one prospective observational study of errors associated with parenteral …

Background: Treatment of sleep disorders in visually impaired children is complicated by a complex pathophysiology, a high incidence of sleep disorders in this population, and a dearth of management options. The significant impact on the health of these children and distress to their caregivers warrant a systematic assessment of the published literature on therapeutic approaches. Objective: This systematic review aims to assess the current therapeutic options in the management of sleep disorders in visually impaired children to identify knowledge gaps and guide future research. Methods: A search of primary literature was conducted using the bibliographic databases PubMed (1980-August 2010), EMBASE …

Cold And Heat Pattern Of Rheumatoid Arthritis In Traditional Chinese Medicine: Distinct Molecular Signatures Indentified By Microarray Expression Profiles In Cd-4 Positive T Cell., C Lu, C Xiao, G Chen, M Jiang, Q Zha, X Yan, W Kong, Aiping Lu
Professor LU, Aiping
The research is aimed to explore the distinct molecular signatures in discriminating the rheumatoid arthritis patients with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cold pattern and heat pattern. Twenty patients with typical TCM cold pattern and heat pattern were included. Microarray technology was used to reveal gene expression profiles in CD4+ T cells. The signal intensity of each expressed gene was globally normalized using the R statistics program. The ratio of cold pattern to heat pattern in patients with RA at more or less than 1:2 was taken as the differential gene expression criteria. Protein-protein interaction information for these genes from databases …
