Research Day

Introduction

Doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity remains a significant barrier limiting its clinical application due to a lack of effective resolution. Targeting how DOX enters cardiac and cancer cells is a promising new strategy. Research suggests that an OCT3 transporter significantly contributes to DOX entry into the heart tissue. By contrast, it expresses much lower on breast cancer cell lines. Moreover, Nilotinib (NIB) can suppress OCT3 transporter function by 80%. Therefore, exploring the impact of NIB on the DOX’s effects on cardiac and cancer cell lines by altering DOX intracellular accumulation is intriguing.

Prolonged Length Of Stay In Illeal Conduit Compared To Neobladder Diversion In Radical Cystectomy Patients For Bladder Cancer, Ryan J. Moriarty, Young Son, Brian Thomas, Ronald Clearie, Lance Earnshaw, Dayna Devincentz, Thomas Mueller May 2023

Prolonged Length Of Stay In Illeal Conduit Compared To Neobladder Diversion In Radical Cystectomy Patients For Bladder Cancer, Ryan J. Moriarty, Young Son, Brian Thomas, Ronald Clearie, Lance Earnshaw, Dayna Devincentz, Thomas Mueller

Research Day

Background:

Radical cystectomy and urinary diversion has become the standard treatment for invasive and complicated malignancies of the bladder, urethra, and ureters. [1] Robotic-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC), introduced in the last decade, has been associated with favorable perioperative outcomes when compared to open radical cystectomy. Yet little is known about how different urinary diversion types compare in regards to length of hospital stay, readmission rates, and perioperative course. This data analysis seeks to identify the statistically significant differences in postoperative course of ileal conduit versus neobladder among patients with staged bladder cancer.

Methods:

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical …

Phage Peptide Technology To Characterize Extracellular Vesicles In The Brain Tumors, Jadelynn Rudolf Mar 2023

Phage Peptide Technology To Characterize Extracellular Vesicles In The Brain Tumors, Jadelynn Rudolf

Undergraduate Research Conference

Extracellular vesicles (EV) are lipid-bound containers derived from the endosomal membrane network or from the extracellular membrane of cells. They can carry proteins, lipids, miRNAs, and other molecules, and may be involved in intercellular communication via membrane-associated proteins. Glioblastomas (GBM) are aggressive cancers of the brain and spinal cord derived from astrocytes. Extracellular vesicles derived from glioblastomas can make their way through the blood brain barrier and find their way to different bodily fluids, and so could serve as biomarkers for this cancer. We have isolated phage-display peptides from a commercial library of random phage-displayed peptides that will bind glioblastoma …

Interprofessional Collaboration Optimizes Oncology Navigation Efficiency And Value, Lauri Ledbeter, Whitney Daws, Rebekah Hart, Lindsay Shimizu

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background: Oncology navigation programs have evolved to include services for addressing cancer care barriers, focusing on care coordination, patient experience, and care value, and may include nurses, social workers, and non-licensed trained workers as care navigators. The 2023 Enhancing Oncology Payment Model (EOPM) requires navigation services and emphasizes improving care value and outcomes. Effective healthcare navigation and collaboration can improve value by reducing care duplication, missed appointments, and emergency admissions; identifying and addressing health-related social needs; addressing health inequities; and improving time-to-treatment initiation and patient retention. The Institute of Medicine also advocates for healthcare professionals to work interprofessionally, implement quality …

Uncovering The Role Of Cancer Associated Fibroblasts In Tumor Immunosuppression, Kamal Amirneni, Kavitha Yaddanapudi Jan 2023

Uncovering The Role Of Cancer Associated Fibroblasts In Tumor Immunosuppression, Kamal Amirneni, Kavitha Yaddanapudi

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Current advances in cancer immunotherapy are hindered by the immunosuppressive nature of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are a key component of the TME that contribute to suppressing the immune response. Chemokines and cytokines released by CAFs, such as IL-6, attract circulating monocytes which are converted into myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). MDSCs suppress T-cells and natural killer cell proliferation which inactivates the immune response and deters immunotherapy. Both Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) have been implicated in the CAF immunosuppressive pathway, but a causal link has yet to be established. We hypothesized …
