PURPOSE: The purpose of this evaluation project was to determine the effectiveness of the Norton Healthcare new graduate nurse residency program on retention and engagement of newly- licensed registered nurses.

METHODS: This study was a retrospective pre-test, post-test design of the impact of the nurse residency program on turnover and engagement for the participants in the first year of the Norton Healthcare Nurse Residency Program. Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to create a Nurse Manager System Collaborative Council (NMSCC) at Norton Healthcare and to determine the impact of participation in the NMSCC on job satisfaction, intent to leave, and resilience.

METHODS: This study employed a quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test design to assess the effectiveness of the NMSCC at Norton Healthcare. Job Satisfaction was measured using the Warshawsky scale, Intent to Leave was evaluated using the Houser scale, and resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson CD-RISC scale.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to ascertain nursing leaders and direct care nurses’ perceptions of the health of the work environment in medical-surgical, intermediate care, and progressive care units at an acute care hospital located in central Kentucky. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive, correlational design. Bivariate statistical procedures were utilized to determine the relationship between the perceptions of the health of the work environment and nursing turnover and engagement. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a registered Nurse Navigator (NN) on hospital 30-day readmissions for patients with heart failure at Norton Healthcare (NHC) in Louisville, Kentucky.

Purpose: To evaluate provider adherence to a clinical guideline for management of hypertension, and to assess improvement in quality of management of student patients with hypertension in a university student clinic.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify student patients with hypertension. Data collected included the demographics of the sample patients, blood pressures, LDL results, weights, and evidence of provider compliance with guidelines.

Rates of depression in older home healthcare (HH) patients are highly prevalent. Although depression in this population is associated with increased rates of re-hospitalization, falls, and suicides, it is frequently under diagnosed and under treated. This Capstone Report examined this problem through three interrelated manuscripts. The first manuscript explored the problem through a review of the literature. To evaluate the effectiveness of a newly implemented charge nurse-led trauma resuscitation team approach in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU). The approach was developed to improve patient throughput efficiency at a Level 1 Trauma Center. Measures of effectiveness include patient throughput efficiency, patient clinical outcomes, and financial impact. The implementation of the charge nurse-led trauma resuscitation team showed an improvement in efficiency of patient throughput without adversely affecting patient outcomes, and opening up critical resources for the next patient that arrives.

The nurse manager role has experienced an explosion of responsibilities and expectations over the last decade. As a result, competency and skill acquisition for the successful nurse manager has become the focus of many nurse managers, nurse executives, researchers and organizations. The three manuscripts contained in this final capstone report will explore the acquisition of nurse manager competency, propose coaching as a methodology for acceleration and improvement of nurse manager skill acquisition and describe the results of three case studies using coaching as an intervention to improve the performance improvement skill acquisition of nurse managers.
