Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate if there is a significant difference in outcomes of VV- ECMO patients who received routine echocardiograms compared to those who did not, and appropriately manage once RV dysfunction …

The Effects Of Yoga On Anxiety And Sleep Quality Levels Among College Students, Larisa Lucas Mullins Jan 2024

The Effects Of Yoga On Anxiety And Sleep Quality Levels Among College Students, Larisa Lucas Mullins

DNP Projects

Background: College students have poor sleep quality due to a newfound sense of freedom, exposure to new influences, or poor sleep hygiene (Dinis & Barganca, 2018). Specifically, evidence supports a correlation between sleep latency in onset or lack of nighttime sleep and increased anxiety (Dinis & Barganca, 2018). Yoga has been shown to decrease anxiety, stress symptoms, and depression (Mullen et al., 2021). Teaching yoga techniques and encouraging routine yoga practice to college students may improve sleep quality and decrease anxiety.

Purpose: This project's purpose was to evaluate the effect of yoga education and videos on sleep quality and …

Electroconvulsive Therapy: Improving Psychiatric Rn Knowledge And Attitudes Using An Educational Module, Garrett Payne Jan 2024

Electroconvulsive Therapy: Improving Psychiatric Rn Knowledge And Attitudes Using An Educational Module, Garrett Payne

DNP Projects

Abstract

Background: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a robust, versatile treatment option for many psychiatric disorders and diseases, but systemic low levels of knowledge and negative attitudes exist towards the procedure among healthcare workers, specifically among psychiatric RNs. The negative attitudes surrounding ECT are most attributable to a misunderstanding of its uses, efficacy, procedures, and safety. Psychiatric RNs hold more negative beliefs and misconceptions about ECT than any other group of healthcare workers who directly care for patients receiving the treatment. Psychiatric RNs also demonstrate poor understanding of ECT treatment procedures and outcomes. Current evidence-based practice shows that providing psychiatric RNs …

An Educational Intervention To Improve Neonatal Icu Nurses’ Breastfeeding Support Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Breastfeeding Rates At Discharge, Sarah Money

DNP Projects

Background: The benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby are known. It is recommended that all infants be exclusively breastfed until six months (Meek & Noble, 2022; North et al., 2021). Despite this, breastfeeding rates remain low, especially in medically fragile infants requiring care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (Rollins et al., 2016). Receipt of evidence-based breastfeeding support by healthcare providers has been shown to improve breastfeeding success; however, many healthcare providers report not being comfortable or knowledgeable enough to offer support consistently (Mulcahy et al., 2022; Rollins et al., 2016).

Purpose: This study aims …

The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram (V. 5), Roy E. Brown Jan 2024

The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram (V. 5), Roy E. Brown

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This updated edition of The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram improves on the 2023 version. It provides a depiction of the steps involved in the clinical inquiry process, covering research, performance improvement, and evidence-based practice. The revisions in this version emphasize the importance of alerting users to the iterative nature of clinical inquiry and the ongoing need to assess the situation or patient based on evolving evidence. It's crucial to recognize that the clinical inquiry process does not follow a linear, sequential progression. Instead, individuals may find themselves concurrently addressing different aspects of the process or revisiting prior steps as they …

The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram Question Development Checklist, Roy E. Brown

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This updated handout, previously published in 2023, serves as a reference for those who are either in an EBP course or are practicing healthcare providers involved in questioning practices to improve patient care. The handout guides the user from identifying and developing a question to determining whether the clinical question, based on evidence, will be an evidence-based practice project/initiative, a performance improvement project, or a research project. It aligns with the fifth version of the Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram and now includes several different formats that can be used when trying to create a focused clinical question.

Evidence-Based Decision Making At The Bedside Process, Roy E. Brown Jan 2024

Evidence-Based Decision Making At The Bedside Process, Roy E. Brown

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is crucial in healthcare for improving care and organizational outcomes. However, there is a lack of consensus among various health professions regarding the definition and implementation of evidence-based practice in the clinical environment. This lack of consensus centers on whether EBP is project-based or if it occurs primarily at the bedside. This diagram illustrates how evidence is utilized to inform bedside decision-making. It demonstrates that the process is iterative and the intervention or decision made is contingent upon the evidence, one’s clinical experience, and the patient/situation.

The purpose of the diagram is to help those involved in …

The Multigenerational Legacy Of Diabetes And Illness Perception: Influence On Older Adult’S Stigma, Melissa Scollan-Koliopoulos, Donna Naturale, Brynn Mahurter, Sara Curran, Ryan J. Koliopoulos

Nursing Faculty Publications

There is not enough information regarding the impact of stigma associated with a. diagnosis of diabetes in aging older adults. Perceptions of diabetes are passed down generationally and may be influenced by mainstream societal perceptions at the time the perception is shaped. This is known as a multigenerational legacy of diabetes for those with whom the perceptions are shaped within families when a hereditarily predisposed condition occurs. In this study, participants over the age of (n = 88) 60 years old were administered measures of illness perception with social stigma items added to the social consequences domain. Participants were also …

Unfortunately, the potential economic burden and the accompanying psychological burden is seldom discussed up front. There is a significant need for routine screening and a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention of financial toxicity for the oncology patient. The purpose of this doctoral project was to lead an interprofessional team in the development of a clinical practice guideline for routine financial screening using the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity (COST) tool …

Impact Of Traditional Education And Learner-Centered Education On Standardized Tests, Courtney Marie Winslow Jan 2024

Impact Of Traditional Education And Learner-Centered Education On Standardized Tests, Courtney Marie Winslow

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a current shortage of approximately 45,000 nurses and nursing faculty to train student nurses, a number that is projected to grow. One proposed method to combat the shortage is to transition from traditional lecture-based classrooms to a learner-centered approach. Asking or requiring faculty to transition an entire nursing program from one teaching method to another without supporting data could be a waste of valuable time and resources. It could also prove detrimental to a program if students were unable to pass the NCLEX-RN exam, and a program was forced to close. The current study examined whether there was …

Hack24f: Ai Conversations In Healthcare, Patrick Finger, Hannah Neale, Anthony Ferreira, Ayaz Mohammed

Paul English Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute Publications

Nursing students often complete clinical hours under the supervision of instructors in traditional hospital settings. However, obtaining individualized, consistent feedback from patients about their interactions with nursing students is often not feasible. This limits students' ability to fully understand how their communication skills are perceived and how they can improve. Currently, there are no models that represent realistic real life conversations with patients. Most virtual simulation models used for nursing students provide scripted responses that do not feel genuine.

Improving Parental Communication With Adolescents About Sex, Amanda Blanton

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

In 2018, 68 million people in the United States were infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Of those 68 million, 26 million cases were newly diagnosed, and of that 26 million, half were youth aged 15-24 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022a). The approaches to educating our youth about sexual health are inconsistent, leading to misconceptions about the dangers associated with risky sexual behavior. However, parents have the upper hand in discussing sexual health information with their children by being the child’s first contact and source of information. Teens who report talking with their parents about sex are …

Determining The Need For 23-Hour Observation Following Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusions: A Patient Perspective On Recovery At Home, Lacey Irias

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is becoming more frequently performed in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Subsequently, patients are scheduled for an option to undergo a 23-hour observation which requires staff preparation. The preparation increases costs and creates a shortage during a standard daytime shift which can reflect negatively on patient care. Most patients elect to be discharged the same day, on account of experiencing minimal pain and seeking the comfort of their own home. The goal of this DNP project was to assess the necessity of scheduling a patient 23 hours for observation following a …
