The first part is a survey of research studies which have been done concerning the effects of hospitalization upon the child. These studies are arranged in order of publication--from the first study published in 1945 to the last one, which was published in 1968. A conclusion follows the individual reports of these studies.

Postpartum depression was thought to be an important component of maternity blues and was the factor explored in this study. Sleep was hypothesized as a factor affecting either the occurrence or severity of postpartum depression. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation and postpartum depression.

Twenty patients were interviewed one to three weeks prior to their expected dates of delivery. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Depression scale was administered during the interview and each patient kept a record of her hours of sleep during the following week. The purposes of this study were (1) to reduce the gap in nursing between theory and practice by applying to nursing practice selected nursing theory as identified in literature, and (2) to determine the quality of nursing care given when nurses carried out their unique functions in seven selected areas.

The study was conducted in a university hospital over a period of eight weeks on two, twenty-six-bed general surgical units, one experimental and one control. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate (1) what physical care critical incidents primiparae experience while providing mother-infant care during the first postpartum month and (2) what evaluations mothers give to nursing intervention applied to such critical incidents.

Six mothers who met the criteria of selection were visited four or five times. The first visit was made in the hospital to obtain background information of the mother's preparation for maternal and infant care. An Instructional Method For Self-Administered Medications, Beryl Marx, Lorene Russell

An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.

Sixty private patients from the Loma Linda University Hospital outpatient department were selected and randomly placed in the experimental and control groups. …

Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies. Twenty-one children comprising Group E were involved in a play session by the researchers. Twenty children were not prepared in this way. The tools …

A study was conducted to identify selected needs of patients receiving nursing care at home through the Loma Linda University Hospital Department of Home Care. The descriptive survey was used. Fifty patient home care records were reviewed.

From the general information secured, it was found that 68 percent of the patients studied were women. One-half of all patients were under sixty years of age. Fifty-four percent lived with a spouse only, while 26 percent lived with their family. There were 20 percent who lived alone and six of these were over the age of sixty. A causal-comparative, study was done in a university hospital using twelve subjects to determine if the "unprepared" patient could learn and carry out abdominal breathing during contractions. It was hypothesized that the "unprepared" patient in early labor could be taught and could carry out deep slow abdominal breathing during uterine contractions with decreased skeletal muscle tension as measured by an electromyograph.

The purpose of the study was to determine if cloth stuffed toys used by children in the pediatric unit of Loma Linda University Hospital carry microbacterial pathogens that are the same type as those pathogens found in the throat of the child using the toy. A second purpose was to determine how long the selected pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Diplococcus pneumonia, survive on the same cloth toys as used in the selected hospital. The purposes of this study were: (1) to find out if it is necessary to check temperatures of adult medical and surgical patients as frequently as it has been done in the selected hospital; and (2) to show that factors of beginning elevations can be identified without checking patients’ temperatures more than once daily.

A survey was conducted of fifty-nine adult medical and forty adult surgical patients' temperatures from the time they were admitted until they were discharged or for ten days. A total of 2,484 temperatures were studied. Most of the patients had their highest temperatures at 8 p.m. …

The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. This exploratory study had as its objective the identification of the spiritual needs of patients. Three aspects of the study were: (1) to identify the spiritual needs students of nursing recognized during the care of their patients; (2) to discover the type of behavior patients manifested which enabled the students to recognize these needs and, (3) to identify the spiritual care given to patients by students during their regular nursing assignments.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of particular sounds upon certain indices of cardio-pulmonary function and the degree and pattern of changes which occurred in the indices. The specific physiological parameters chosen to be monitored were heart rate, respiratory rate, mean tidal volume, instantaneous minute volume, and oxygen consumption. This study was concerned with finding out how much nursing personnel know about identifying signs of increased intracranial pressure and what understanding they have regarding the importance of prompt reporting of these signs.

A statement was prepared describing what the registered nurse, the license vocational nurse and the nursing assistant should know. This was validated by a panel of experts.

An experimental research study was conducted on eighty-four patients in one part-pay clinic. The study was guided by the null hypothesis which stated that the patient who receives specific written information before the sigmoidoscopic exam reports the same discomfort as the patient who has not had this information. The purpose of the study was to compare the discomfort experienced by patients who received specific information about this examination with the discomfort; of patients who had not had this information. This descriptive survey study was conducted to find out if women experienced more postoperative discomforts than men as determined by their statements on the third postoperative day. With this knowledge, the nursing care of these patients can be planned and improved. Twenty-five men and twenty-five women interviewed on their third postoperative day were asked to recall what they had experienced on the first, second, and third postoperative days. An interview guide adapted from the study conducted by Bartlett was used. The findings indicated that more women than men complained of feeling uncomfortable postoperatively. This study was concerned with determining the knowledge registered professional nurses had regarding selected factors that contributed to variations in the indirect measurement of blood pressure.
