Adolescents often make adult decisions regarding their lifestyle and behavior with little support from their family and community. In this study the researcher examined the difference in risk-taking behaviors between genders and the role that families and communities play in reducing risk-taking behaviors. In the study I further analyzed self-reports of numbers of development assets those students reporting participation in high-risk behaviors. Postoperative Nursing Care Contributions To Symptom Distress And Functional Status After Ambulatory Surgery, Beth Ann Swan

The relationship of postoperative patient-perceived nurse caring behaviors to symptom distress and functional status in 100 adult ambulatory surgical patients was examined. These behaviors explained 9.3% to 18.2% of the variance in functional status on the 1st, 4th, and 7th day postsurgery, and 10% of the variance in symptom distress on the 7th postoperative day after controlling for ASA physical status classification, preoperative symptom distress, and preoperative functional status.

Renal disease and diabetes lead to dysautonomia resulting in consequences ranging from gastroparesis to sudden death. New technologies to detect dysautonomia, such as 24-hr heart rate variability, are being evaluated and compared to traditional evoked tests. These advances have, however, lead to a lack of standardization in testing batteries, procedures, and reporting formats. This series of 3 studies psychometrically assessed measures of autonomic function (AF) and explored relationships among objective and subjective measures in healthy adults and uremic patients. Minimal research has addressed effects of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of cardiovascular autonomic balance and a predictor of cardiac morbidity/mortality. Using an exploratory, pre-test/post-test design to describe HRV in postmenopausal women (PMW) before/after six weeks of HRT, twenty-four Black (n=15) and White (n=9) women, (mean age=55±4 years), were recruited from two primary care clinics (n=20) and one church population (n=4) in a large urban midsouth community. This study tested if reminiscence therapy would improve client satisfaction with nursing care. An experimental post test only design was used on 39 clients in a moderate sized home care agency in the Midwest. Ages ranged from 65 to 98. A single, one-on-one reminiscence session was done with 22 subjects in their homes after a routine nursing visit. The control group subjects did not receive the reminiscence intervention. The groups were homogeneous except for the number of hospitalizations experienced in the past year. The control group had a significantly higher number.

Lazarus' Stress and Coping Theory was used to examine the relationship between hardiness, social support, and nurses’ appraisal of stress as a threat or challenge. This descriptive correlational design used a convenience sample of 40 registered nurses on orientation at a large West Michigan hospital.

Hardiness and social support were dichotomized by splitting them at the median. The proportion of the sample viewing orientation as a challenge versus threat was not significantly different regardless of their hardiness or social support status. The purposes of this study were to determine if posttraumatic stress (PTS), depression, and anxiety occurred in a community sample of Vietnamese and Hmong mothers and to describe relationships between PTS, depression, anxiety, acculturation and maternal sensitivity. Transition theory (Bridges, 1980), and a conceptual model of parenting in immigrant populations building on Belsky's (1984) work, provided the theoretical framework (Foss, 1996). The sample was divided evenly between Vietnamese and Hmong participants. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the extent to which California nurse practitioners screen for testicular cancer and the frequency of teaching testicular self-examination to patients. The study surveyed 425 adult or family nurse practitioners, currently practicing in the state of California, with a patient population that includes males age 15-35. The use of alternative therapies in the United States is becoming more and more prevalent. One out of three Americans use alternative therapies and the failure to report the use of alternative therapies could affect the client's health. The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which clients use and report their use of alternative therapies to their medical care provider, as well as identifying barriers to reporting. Little is known about what makes teens experiment with sex earlier and earlier in their lives. These young girls are faced with the burden and responsibility of parenthood at a time in their lives when they are coping poorly with their own developmental tasks. The teen's perception of family functioning may have a direct impact upon adolescent risk for pregnancy. This study investigated the relationship between family functioning and pregnancy among 13- to 19-year-olds using the Family Apgar Questionnaire. The purpose of this triangulated descriptive study was threefold: (a) to identify the financial costs for acute trauma care, including costs for those who die early in treatment, and who pays those costs; (b) to identify the relationship between costs and severity of injury; and (c) to identify survivor functional and psychosocial costs, or quality of life, not only by current health care outcome criteria, but also from patients' and families' perspectives. The elderly are a growing population; however, limited information concerning energy requirements of the elderly is available. Dietary intake data have been collected in research and clinical settings to determine the intakes of energy and nutrients, but the accuracy of dietary intake data has been difficult to verify. Studies using doubly labeled water have suggested that dietary energy intake is underreported by obese subjects (1), adolescents (2), and athletes (3).
