Assisting Nursing Students To Plan For Retirement, Pamela K. Strohfus, Vivian Schrader

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Nursing Leadership and Management faculty felt it was very important to teach "career and retirement life lessons". "Inadequate retirement savings is an issue that many nurses may face,…preparing for a secure retirement isn't taught in nursing school" says Monica Vollmuth, (ANA's Congress of Nursing Practice and Economics). In response, this content was included in a one credit senior seminar course.

Wellness Characteristics And Health Risk Behaviors Of Young Adult University Students, Nicole Mareno Phd Mar 2009

Wellness Characteristics And Health Risk Behaviors Of Young Adult University Students, Nicole Mareno Phd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine wellness and health risk behaviors of young adults at a university in the southwest. Nutrition, physical activity, alcohol use, and safe sexual practices are high priority health concerns on college campuses. Health promotion is integral to nursing. Early identification of risky health behaviors allows for the design of campus health interventions. Health behaviors continue to be formed during college and interventions may have a lasting impact on health promotion and disease prevention. This study added to the research on demographic factors impacting wellness. A correlation between BMI and wellness level was also …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: In this review we describe the approach taken by the National Children’s Study (NCS), a 21-year prospective study of 100,000 American children, to understanding the role of environmental factors in the development of obesity.

Data sources and extraction: We review the literature with regard to the two core hypotheses in the NCS that relate to environmental origins of obesity and describe strategies that will be used to test each hypothesis.

Data synthesis: Although it is clear that obesity in an individual results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, control of the obesity epidemic will require understanding of …

Efficacy And Efficiency In Natural Family Planning Services, Richard J. Fehring Feb 2009

Efficacy And Efficiency In Natural Family Planning Services, Richard J. Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Relatively few Catholic couples in the United States use modern methods of natural family planning (NFP). So too, few Catholic physicians and health professionals prescribe the use of NFP methods for their patients. Reasons for low use of NFP methods include their perceived low efficacy; the complexity of learning, using, and teaching these methods; and the prolonged (and often unnecessary) required abstinence. Newer and simplified methods of NFP have been developed by physicians and scientists that are less complex and use modern technologies of detecting fertility and communicating instructions. Catholic physicians and scientists need to continue to answer the call …

Evaluation Of An Intimate Partner Violence Curriculum In A Pediatric Hospital, Norah L. Johnson, Carol Klingbeil, Marlene Melzer-Lange, Candi Humphreys, Matthew C. Scanlon, Pippa Simpson

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

OBJECTIVE. Intimate partner violence harms victims as well as families and communities. Many barriers account for limited intimate partner violence screening by nurses. The purpose of this study was to measure how participation in a curriculum about screening parents for intimate partner violence, at a pediatric hospital, affects a nurse's knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and self-efficacy for intimate partner violence screening.

METHODS. In this interventional, longitudinal study, data were collected before participation in an intimate partner violence screening curriculum, after participation, and 3 months later. The measurement tool was adapted from Maiuro's (2000) Self-efficacy for Screening for Intimate Partner Violence Questionnaire. …

Nurse Influence In Policy Development: A Model Using Storytelling, Michele Anderson Jan 2009

Nurse Influence In Policy Development: A Model Using Storytelling, Michele Anderson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This project will explore how nurses' stories of social injustice can be used to influence legislative action on health policy. Nursing history has proved the profession's roots in political activism and social justice, Role models and trailblazers like Lillian Wald solidified the nursing intervention of political involvement, but somewhere along the way it has lost its value. Using Newman's Health as Expanding Consciousness theory as a guide, nurses can use stories to illustrate the patterns of disruption in the current healthcare system and then lead policy into reform.

The Value Of Creating A Culture Of Caring, Lisa C. Carter

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to provide nursing leaders, who attend the American Nephrology Nurses' Association Leadership Pre-Conference Workshop, the rationale, tools, and outcomes of creating a theory based culture of caring in health care organizations. Utilizing the foundations of transformational and resonant leadership styles, a theory-guided approach to the caring science based in nursing practice will be explored and relevant research reviewed to elucidate to the participants the value added benefit of exploring one's own organizational culture of caring. The author's exploration of her own culture of caring will be shared to demonstrate the process and outcome.

Collaborative Education: An Innovative Method Of Teaching Undergraduate Nursing Students, Karen Clark-Burg Jan 2009

Collaborative Education: An Innovative Method Of Teaching Undergraduate Nursing Students, Karen Clark-Burg

Nursing Conference Papers

The aim of this presentation is to provide you with an insight into the structure of a unit I teach at Notre Dame University, where we have incorporated the idea of collaborative education as a method of teaching our undergraduate nursing student.

As a definition, “Collaborative education is an active learning experience crossing institutional, professional and historical boundaries”. That active learning experience is the essence of collaborative education, and is often expressed with the phrase, “learning by doing”. Academics and health care organisations become experts in the collaborative process only by immersion in it through actively working with each other …

Nurse Anesthetists' Perception Of Their Rigorous Training Program A Grounded Theory Study, Joy Kieffer Phillips Jan 2009

Nurse Anesthetists' Perception Of Their Rigorous Training Program A Grounded Theory Study, Joy Kieffer Phillips

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

There is no empirical understanding of the stressors that nurse anesthesia students encounter from their perspective as they negotiate a nurse anesthesia program. The initial research questions for this study examined what stressors these recent graduates encountered during their program and how they successfully negotiated those stressors. This study employed grounded theory methodology and the theory of symbolic interactionism. The data were collected from individual, semistructured, indepth interviews with 12 recent nurse anesthesia graduates who have been out of school for less than 2 years. The interview transcripts were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The stressors discovered were …

The Role Of Nurse Practitioners In Meeting The Need For Child And Adolescent Services: A Statewide Survey, Lara Kaye, Lynn Alice Warner, Cathleen A. Lewandowski, Rose Greene, Janet Acker, Nancy Chiarella

Social Work Faculty Publications

The high prevalence of child and adolescent mental health disorders coupled with shortages in ageappropriate mental health services pose a significant problem likely to be exacerbated over time. A survey was designed to identify the current status of and need for child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs) and mental health services, as well as strategies and recommendations to address identified needs in the state of New York. Key informants from each county and New York City were surveyed by telephone (N = 58). Most respondents identified a shortage of child and adolescent psychiatry services and reported that when CAPs are unavailable, …

Nursing Faculty Shortage: Nurses' Perceptions As A Key To Administrative Solutions, Evelyn M. Klocke Jan 2009

Nursing Faculty Shortage: Nurses' Perceptions As A Key To Administrative Solutions, Evelyn M. Klocke

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The nursing faculty shortage is well documented. Higher education administrators turn away qualified student applicants because of the lack of qualified nursing faculty. Furthermore, they find recruitment and retention of qualified nursing faculty a challenge. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of the nursing faculty role, causes of the faculty shortage, and solutions to the shortage as perceived by: 1) nurses currently in a faculty role and 2) nurses with a master’s degree who were not employed in a full-time faculty position. A qualitative study using the phenomenological method was undertaken. Two groups of nurses were interviewed. …

Exploring Possibilities: Virtual Reality In Nursing Research, Rebecca L. Davis Jan 2009

Exploring Possibilities: Virtual Reality In Nursing Research, Rebecca L. Davis

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper describes the use of virtual reality (VR) as a method of measurement in nursing research. VR refers to the use of computerized displays to display a life-like environment in which the user interacts. Although many disciplines are beginning to use VR environments in research, nursing has yet to embrace this technology. Nursing, as a profession which values the interaction between the environment, individual, and health, can benefit from the use of VR in research. Establishing reliability and validity of the VR tool selected for research is important and requires special consideration. VR testing can produce side effects, such …

The School Nurse's Perception Of Health Promotion Behavior, Susan Bullard Furr Jan 2009

The School Nurse's Perception Of Health Promotion Behavior, Susan Bullard Furr

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

This was a descriptive study that assessed school nurses' perceptions of health-promoting behavior. A sample of 33 school nurses was asked to complete the Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II) to measure their health-promoting lifestyle. The HPLP-II is a Likert-styled instrument that consists of 52 items divided among six subscales. The six subscales are: (1) health responsibility; (2) physical activity; (3) nutrition; (4) interpersonal relations; (5) spiritual growth and; (6) stress management. The findings indicated that the nurses perceived interpersonal relationships and spiritual growth to be components of their health-promoting behavior as evidenced by higher mean scores in those two …

Methods. A convenience sample of 39 African American women 50 years of age and older was selected from two local Baptist churches in eastern North Carolina. Eligibility criteria included ability to read and write in English with no prior or present …

A Study Of Program Completion And Attrition In One Baccalaureate Nursing Program In The Southeastern United States, Lori J. Shrock Jan 2009

A Study Of Program Completion And Attrition In One Baccalaureate Nursing Program In The Southeastern United States, Lori J. Shrock

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Already facing a national hospital and long-term care registered nurse (RN) shortage, the current number of potential nurse candidates successfully completing baccalaureate nursing programs (BNPs) is not sufficient to meet the estimated demand for baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the United States of America (U.S.) and worldwide. Yet program attrition due to varying reasons leads to graduating nursing classes that are below the clinical program's admission limit in a particular BNP in the Southeastern U.S.--often considerably lower. The study used a convenience sample of all current or former BNP students enrolled in the university from the fall of 2004 to the spring …

Assessing Facilitating Factors And Barriers To Body Mass Index Screening Among School Nurses, Ann M. Stalter

Nursing Faculty Publications

Child obesity among school age children is epidemic in the United States (U.S.). A critical review of literature was completed that concluded that Body Mass Index (BMI) screening for early identification and growth surveillance is needed for successful school-based obesity prevention intervention programs. This study used total survey design methods to identify the BMI screening practices of school nurses (SNs) and to identify the facilitating factors and barriers to BMI screening in public elementary schools among school age populations. Focus groups were used to identify current BMI screening practice in terms of facilitating factors and barriers. Survey methods were used …

Leveraging Higher Salaries For Nursing Faculty, Carolyn B. Yucha, Rosemary Witt Jan 2009

Leveraging Higher Salaries For Nursing Faculty, Carolyn B. Yucha, Rosemary Witt

Nursing Faculty Research

The nursing faculty pay scale at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has increased significantly over the past 5 years. This increase was driven by a number of factors: (a) the rapidly expanding population in Nevada, (b) the nursing shortage and the Nevada legislative mandate to double nursing enrollment in state schools, (c) the national nursing faculty shortage, and (d) the opening of private nursing schools in Nevada. This article describes how, given these factors, the faculty members were able to leverage a pay scale that is finally competitive with clinical appointments.

Critical Factors Within An Inquiry Process That Influence Positive Changes In Clinical Governance, Heather Gluyas Jan 2009

Critical Factors Within An Inquiry Process That Influence Positive Changes In Clinical Governance, Heather Gluyas

Nursing Conference Papers

Major failures in patient safety often lead to high profile inquiries set up to establish the facts, and to identify areas of improvement to prevent further failures. In order to learn from inquiries, we need to be able to identify if, and how, the inquiry process influences improvements.

Using a case study strategy, this research study examined the impact or influence of the Douglas Inquiry on KEMH’s clinical governance systems. The research focused on two areas that were highlighted in the final Inquiry report as requiring reform. These systems deal with the clinical credentialing and performance review and the involvement …
