High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is sweeping the nation as a legitimate and exciting new resource for nursing educators. As with most new technologies, HFS is not without its difficulties. It can be a costly program to run and may also cause anxiety among the faculty required for implementation. There is a simple solution to help increase the ease of its implementation: using student workers. This article discusses how using students to help run the simulations can not only reduce overall cost and anxiety associated with this new technology but also increase learning among those participating in HFS.
Generational Perspectives In Public Health Nursing: Workplace Conditions That Impact Job Satisfaction And Retention, Marilyn Kittleson Deling
Generational Perspectives In Public Health Nursing: Workplace Conditions That Impact Job Satisfaction And Retention, Marilyn Kittleson Deling
Theses and Graduate Projects
Today's nursing shortage is expected to continue due to the aging nursing workforce, as well as poor job satisfaction among nurses. Public Health Nursing is one area of the nursing workforce which is experiencing a nursing shortage, at the same time there is an increasing demand for public health nurses. One way nursing leaders can promote job satisfaction, while creating an environment of retention, is through accommodating generational preferences.
Today's nursing workforce consists of three generations: Baby Boomers, born from 1946-1962; Generation Xers, born from 1963- 1979; and Millennials (Generation Y), born from 1980-2000. Each of these generations represents different …
Maternal Attitudes Related To Infant Feeding And Breastfeeding Behaviors In Taiwan, Yen-Ju Ho
Maternal Attitudes Related To Infant Feeding And Breastfeeding Behaviors In Taiwan, Yen-Ju Ho
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The government in Taiwan has promoted breastfeeding in recent years yet, exclusive initiation rates and continuation of breastfeeding remain low. Maternal attitudes have been found to be better predictors of infant feeding method during the postpartum period than socio-demographic factors. Understanding maternal attitudes related to infant feeding in Taiwan will support the development of better targeted, more effective health promotion programs aimed at increasing breastfeeding rates. Objectives: To examine maternal attitudes toward breastfeeding and the relationship of these factors to breastfeeding duration at six weeks postpartum. The Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IIFAS) was translated into Chinese for this …

The Experience Of Internationally Born Nurses Working In Twin Cities Hospitals, Jolene C. Baker
The Experience Of Internationally Born Nurses Working In Twin Cities Hospitals, Jolene C. Baker
Theses and Graduate Projects
This qualitative study explores through a phenomenological process, the experiences of five Internationally Born Nurses (IBNs) working in four hospitals in the metropolitan area of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The IBNs were interviewed using Brenda Dervin's Sense-Making theory. This communication methodology presents the human being in phenomenological terms, as a body-mind-heart-spirit moving through time and space, with a past history, present reality, and future dreams or ambitions. The nursing theory underlying this study was drawn from Jean Watson's Caring Science as Sacred Science. In addition, the Christian worldview articulated by Shelly and Miller with particular emphasis on the concept of …

A Comparison Of The Wishes Of Hospitalized Patients Regarding Prayer From Healthcare Professionals In Religious Based And Non Religious Based Healthcare Facilities, Jessica White, Tracy Polley
Graduate Research Projects
Aim
This paper examines patient’s desire for prayer from their health care providers and looks at the difference in prayer frequency between religious and non-religious based hospitals.
Background
Continued debate surrounds this concept: How much spiritual care should be integrated into the medical field? Many theorists have included spirituality as an integral part to holistic care. Therefore healthcare providers should address prayer and spirituality.
Method
A convenience sampling of 93 patients was taken from a government and a religious based hospital in southeastern Tennessee. The questionnaire used was specifically designed for the study. Information collected included demographics, religious affiliation, habits …

This research reports immune function and health outcomes in women with depression, as compared with a nondepressed control group. Using Psychoneuroimmunolgy theory and a descriptive comparison design, scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used to divide 40 non-hospitalized Caucasian women between the ages of 18 and 65 years into either the control or depression comparison group. Women with depression were found to report significantly more incidences of illness over the previous two months and they were found to have significantly more indicators of illness at the time of the exam as compared to the controls. However, contrary to …

Addressing The Lack Of Palliative Care Resources For Icu Patients And Families, Jeffrey Chiv
Addressing The Lack Of Palliative Care Resources For Icu Patients And Families, Jeffrey Chiv
Senior Honors Projects
An alarming trend in hospitals across the United States is the increased prevalence of end-of-life care issues the healthcare team must face. This increase can be attributed to the advent of new medical technology; the average life expectancy of the population is increased due to new treatment options for acute diseases. The dire tradeoff of this benefit is that the main cause of death has shifted from acute disease to chronic diseases such as cancer. These debilitating diseases often result in situations where patients are no longer able to exercise autonomy or communicate, relying on family and healthcare providers to …

Everything's Better In Moderation: Young Women's Gender Role Attitudes And Risky Sexual Behavior, Tamara Leech
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose This study examines the association between gender role attitudes and risky sexual behavior among young women. Previous studies have posed seemingly contradictory arguments: that either traditional attitudes or egalitarian attitudes are associated with riskier behavior. Methods Data are based on the children of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, representing 520 sexually active 18–19-year-old women. Propensity radius matching was used to assess differences in rates of multiple sexual partners and sex outside of a committed relationship. Results Relative to moderate gender role attitudes, both egalitarian gender role attitudes and traditional gender role attitudes are associated with higher rates of …

Introduction Mexican Americans are at increased risk for obesity and diabetes. We established a cohort on the United States-Mexico border to determine the prevalence of obesity and diabetes in this Mexican American population and to see whether minor economic advantages had any effect on health.
Methods We randomly selected and extensively documented 810 people aged 35 to 64 years. Weighted data were analyzed to establish prevalence of obesity and diabetes and other markers of poor health such as elevated glycated hemoglobin levels.
Results Rates of obesity (body mass index ≥30 kg/m2) were 57% in the first (lower) of …

Self-Efficacy And The Predictors For Nclex-Rn® Success For Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Linda Anne Silvestri
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) is the examination that nursing graduates must pass to attain the title of registered nurse and practice professionally. Each year a substantial number of nursing graduates are unable to enter the nursing profession because of failure on the NCLEX. Failure on this examination is a concern, especially since this country desperately needs nurses. Currently, the United States (U.S.) is faced with a nursing shortage. This shortage significantly impacts the U.S. health care system and requires urgent attention so that the health care needs of the people in this country are met. …
A Grounded Theory Approach To Faculty’S Perspective And Patterns Of Online Social Presence, Rebecca A. Cox-Davenport
A Grounded Theory Approach To Faculty’S Perspective And Patterns Of Online Social Presence, Rebecca A. Cox-Davenport
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this research study was to generate a grounded theory regarding the patterns and perceptions of nursing faculty in the formation of social processes in an online course. Employing a grounded theory approach, this researcher built upon the theoretical concepts of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2000). The CoI model illustrates the inner workings of the educational experience. The model consists of three main components: social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence. These three elements overlap to demonstrate how each factor influences the other forms of presence. This study sought to better understand …
The Role Of Visual, Vestibular, And Somatosensory Systems In Postural Balance, Mary Grace Gaerlan
The Role Of Visual, Vestibular, And Somatosensory Systems In Postural Balance, Mary Grace Gaerlan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The integration of visual, vestibular, and somatosensory components are used to maintain one's postural balance. Postural control changes over time and body sway increases with age. The different sensory systems begin to develop and refine starting when children are young, while in older adults it begins to decline. Hence, it is important to study the changes that occur in postural balance. There is very little known about balance of younger adults. If balance issues are identified early in adult life it is possible to prevent exacerbation of balance decline as one ages. If nurse practitioners are aware of what dominant …

Grade Point Average As A Predictor Of Timely Graduation From Associate Degree Registered Nursing Programs, Delores J. Jackson
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if admission selection strategies that utilize cumulative and/or pre-requisite GPA are predictive of timely graduation for associate degree nursing (RN-AD) students. Data were obtained from de-identified records of 437 associate degree nursing students enrolled in three Midwest community colleges from 2003-2006. Of the total sample, only 44% of the students graduated on time (i.e., in four semesters or two years). Although a statistically significant difference was found for timely graduation rates between colleges (ranging from 29% in College B to 54% in College A), no relationship was found for cumulative GPA, pre-requisite …
The Impact Of A Clinical Mentor Program On Patient Outcomes, Cynthia M. Steckel Phd
The Impact Of A Clinical Mentor Program On Patient Outcomes, Cynthia M. Steckel Phd
Dissertations
The increasing complexity of patient care requires an expert nurse to navigate the hospital stay, yet today's workforce brings a declining supply of seasoned nurses, creating a patient need/nurse expertise gap. The clinical mentor role was developed to bridge this gap and create a safety net, using expert nurses, relieved of a patient assignment, to provide oversight for quality patient care. Results reported elsewhere showed improvements in failure to rescue and pressure ulcers six months before and after implementation. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term impact of this new care model over the subsequent three years …

Attitudes Of Young Adults About Breastfeeding And The Association Of Breastfeeding Exposure, Cheryl Lynn Darby-Carlberg
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of young adults in Clark County, Nevada about breastfeeding and was a replication of part of a study by Marrone, Vogeltanz-Holm, and Holm (2008). The theory for reasoned action was used as the framework to guide the study. This theory explains deliberate behavior and how specific behaviors, such as breastfeeding, are affected by individual attitudes and social support. The research is a cross-sectional correlational study and sought to test two null hypotheses: (1) There is no association between previous exposure to breastfeeding and positive attitudes toward breastfeeding, and (2) There is no …

The Interim Window: Women’S Experiences During In Vitro Fertilization Leading To Maternal Embryo Attachment, Tammy Mackinnon Lampley
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Infertility affects about 7.3 million women and their partners in the U.S., about 12% of the reproductive-age population. In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been used successfully in the United States since 1981. The number of women seeking artificial reproductive techniques (ART) has increased dramatically and the number of ART cycles performed in the United States has more than doubled, from 64,681 in 1996 to 134,260 in 2005 and 99% of these are IVF. Studies indicated that women rank waiting for the outcome of and IVF treatment and a negative pregnancy result as the most stressful events during their treatment. Although …
Evaluating The Impact Of The Guatemalan Nursing Program On Staff, Organizational, And Clinical Outcomes, Sara Williamson Day
Evaluating The Impact Of The Guatemalan Nursing Program On Staff, Organizational, And Clinical Outcomes, Sara Williamson Day
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
There is great disparity between the outcome of childhood cancer in developed and developing countries. Nurses, who comprise the largest group of health care professionals globally, are essential to successful treatment. Pediatric oncology education is generally unavailable for nurses in developing countries. This lack of education is likely to contribute to the disparity in survival rates, as undereducated nurses are unable to meet the demands of pediatric cancer care. A second critical problem in developing countries is the workload of the nurse, with a patient nurse ratio reported as high as 30 patients per one nurse.
In 2006, the quality …

The Effect Of Shapedown On Habits And Self-Esteem For Overweight And Obese Children, Susan Bonnell Phd
The Effect Of Shapedown On Habits And Self-Esteem For Overweight And Obese Children, Susan Bonnell Phd
Dissertations
Obesity in children is increased in the United States and globally which creates both physical and psychological health risks and co-morbidities affecting the development of positive self-esteem (Sinton & Birch, 2005; Whetstone, Morrissey, & Cummings, 2007). The development of poor self-esteem in children increases the risk of problem behaviors such as aggression, crime, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol use, tobacco use, and eating disorders (Brook et al., 2007). Treatment of childhood obesity is multifaceted, requiring behavioral and lifestyle changes for both child and family to achieve a healthy weight (De-Santis-Moniaci & Altshuler, 2007; Plourde, 2006; Ritchie, Crawford, Hoelscher, & Sothern, …

Battery And Abuse In The Elderly: A Forensic Analysis, Amy Y. Carney Phd, Mfs, Np
Dissertations
Elder abuse is a recognized social problem in the United States. First labeled as "granny battering" and originally studied under the umbrella of family violence, maltreatment of the elderly has received more funding and research in recent years. Multiple aspects of elder abuse have been examined in the literature including measures for detection, assessment, and documentation. Although studies have examined the circumstances surrounding abuse as well as theories of causation and characteristics of the abuser and the abused, studies of the relationship between the abuser and the abused are less well documented. The purpose of this research was to examine …
