Shared Care Dyadic Intervention: Outcome Patterns For Heart Failure Care Partners, Margaret Sebern, Aimee Woda Apr 2012

Shared Care Dyadic Intervention: Outcome Patterns For Heart Failure Care Partners, Margaret Sebern, Aimee Woda

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Up to half of heart failure (HF) patients are readmitted to hospitals within 6 months of discharge. Many readmissions are linked to inadequate self-care or family support. To improve care, practitioners may need to intervene with both the HF patient and family caregiver. Despite the recognition that family interventions improve patient outcomes, there is a lack of evidence to support dyadic interventions in HF. Thus, the purpose of this study was to test the Shared Care Dyadic Intervention (SCDI) designed to improve self-care in HF. The theoretical base of the SCDI was a construct called Shared Care. Shared Care represents …

General Education Requirements In A Community College Baccalaureate Rn-To-Bsn Program, Jason Bentley Krupp

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Increasing demand for nurses with bachelor degrees, the growing culture of accountability in higher education, and the community college baccalaureate phenomena provided the impetus for this study. This ex-post facto quantitative study examined the graduation rates and time to degree of 240 students who were enrolled in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program at a community college in Florida between Fall of 2002 and Spring of 2004. The general education course enrollment patterns of the students were analyzed to determine if they impacted student graduation rates and time to degree. Graduation rates and time to degree of students …

Trends Of Emergency Department Use By Uninsured Individuals For Non-Urgent Health Care Conditions, Kelly A. Cantlin Apr 2012

Trends Of Emergency Department Use By Uninsured Individuals For Non-Urgent Health Care Conditions, Kelly A. Cantlin

Honors Projects

Abstract

Roughly one-third of all emergency department (ED) visits by both insured and uninsured individuals in the United States (US) are for non-urgent health conditions that can be effectively treated at a reduced cost by a primary care provider (Hossain, 2011). The purpose of this study is to identify trends of ED visits by uninsured individuals. This study is a secondary data analysis of patient visits to a midwest community ED. This study examined the services provided in the ED for non-urgent visits that could be provided at a less costly and non-urgent care facility, such as a Community Health …

Development Of A Tool For Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment And Preventive Interventions In Ancillary Services Patients, Monica Shutts Messer Mar 2012

Development Of A Tool For Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment And Preventive Interventions In Ancillary Services Patients, Monica Shutts Messer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of nosocomial pressure ulcers has continued to increase in U.S. hospitals over the past 15 years despite the implementation of national preventive guidelines and the wide-spread use of validated risk assessment tools. The majority of preventive efforts and tools have been focused primarily on patients who are bed-ridden or immobile for extended periods. What has not been well studied or identified is the potential risk for pressure injury to patients undergoing diagnostic procedures in hospital ancillary units where extrinsic risk factors such as high interface pressures on procedure tables and friction and shear from positioning and transport can …

Aims: The aims of the present study are to assess and compare the change in health-related quality of life before and 1 month after CABG and to assess the differences in QOL with respect to …

Testing A Model Of Bacterial Vaginosis Among Black Women, Jessica Brumley Mar 2012

Testing A Model Of Bacterial Vaginosis Among Black Women, Jessica Brumley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial Vaginosis is an inbalance of vaginal flora which has been associated with increased risk of numerous gynecological and obstetric morbidities including increased risk of acquisition of HIV from an infected partner and increased risk of preterm delivery. Black race has been consistently identified as a risk factor for BV. Black women also suffer from significant disparities in most of the morbidities also associated with BV when compared to women of other ethnicities and races. Traditional predictors of BV such as douching practices and sexual behaviors do not fully account for the racial disparities in BV prevalence. Researchers have begun …

Effects Of A Smoke-Free Law In Parks And Beaches On Smoking Behaviour: Methods To Determine Effectiveness, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Ann Pederson, Steve Chasey, Anna Liwander, Andrew Johnson

Nursing Presentations

OVERVIEW

As part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, smoke free laws have resulted in reductions of indoor air pollution, improvements in respiratory and cardiovascular health, reduction of smoking uptake by youth, and increasing tobacco use cessations in various jurisdictions.

Although many studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of smoke-free policies in indoor spaces (e.g. restaurants, bars, workplaces, hospital settings, etc.), little is known about the effectiveness of such policies in outdoor public spaces.

On September 1st, 2010, Vancouver’s smoke-free by-law for the city’s parks, beaches, and facilities came into effect.

The aims of this study are …

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani Mar 2012

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Acute renal failure refers to sudden deterioration in biochemical and physiological functioning of kidneys and often associated with multi organ failure. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) holds special significance for the treatment of renal failure due to a variety of factors. It is believed that CRRT helps in restoration of acid-base imbalances and electrolyte abnormalities. Along with that, with gradual solute removal, it ensures haemodynamic stability and prevents the risk of cerebral oedema in neurosurgery patients. Besides this, several studies have supported that CRRT enables practitioners to adjust drug dosages and prevent drug accumulation and overdose. In addition, gradual removal …

Equity, Evidence & Ethics: Assessing The Implications Of Outdoor Smoke-Free Policies For Vulnerable Populations, Natasha Jategaonkar, Ann Pederson, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Wendy Rice, Phoebe M. Long, Joan L. Bottorff, Natalie Hemsing, Lorraine Greaves Mar 2012

Equity, Evidence & Ethics: Assessing The Implications Of Outdoor Smoke-Free Policies For Vulnerable Populations, Natasha Jategaonkar, Ann Pederson, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Wendy Rice, Phoebe M. Long, Joan L. Bottorff, Natalie Hemsing, Lorraine Greaves

Nursing Presentations

Smoke-free policies in outdoor settings are becoming increasingly common. Economic and social conditions tend to influence tobacco use patterns as well as exposure to secondhand smoke. Thus, active and passive smoking are both health equity and social justice concerns.

Smoking on the Margins is a multi-component,mixed-methods project that applies an ethical framework to outdoor smoke-free policies in order to identify both concerns and opportunities to promote health and health equity.

Justification for smoke-free policies

Smoke-free spaces are primarily justified on the basis of three goals:

1) Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke;

2) Encouraging people to quit smoking; and

3) Preventing …

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara Mar 2012

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara

Nursing Presentations

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Although there has been a steady decline in the overall smoking prevalence in North America during the last decade some subsets of the population continue to smoke at high rates, particularly individuals with a history of substance use disorders (SUD) and/or psychiatric disorders (PD). Studies suggest that individuals with SUD’s and PD’s often have disproportionately higher smoking-related mortality. Studies further suggest that in clinical samples an estimated 75% of individuals with PD and up to 90% of individuals with PD concurrently smoke. This high prevalence of smoking among …
