Psychosocial And Environmental Factors Associated With Dog, Elizabeth Richards, Megan H. Mcdonough, Nancy E. Edwards, Rm Lyle, Philip J. Troped

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Dog walking is associated with higher levels of physical activity (PA). However, not all dog owners walk their dog(s) at a level sufficient for health benefits. Therefore, identifying correlates of dog walking may help to inform the design of more effective interventions to promote this specific form of PA. The purpose of this study was to examine psychosocial and environmental correlates of dog walking and relationships of dog walking with overall PA. In 2010, 391 dog owners (Mage= 43.6±12.3 years) completed a survey. Multiple logistic regression and structural equation modeling were used to examine psychosocial and environmental …

Improving Chronic Kidney Disease Care With Group Visits, Vicki Montoya Jan 2013

Improving Chronic Kidney Disease Care With Group Visits, Vicki Montoya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

First year death rates remain unacceptable high for the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population. New effective methods are vital to improve first year morbidity and mortality outcomes for the population transitioning from Stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) to ESRD)/Stage 5 CKD. Based on current methods, evidence-based recommendations made by nephrology providers are frequently not heeded by patients in Stage 4 CKD. Low levels of patient knowledge, self-efficacy, and a poor ability to self-manage CKD negatively influence a patient’s ability to follow provider recommendations. The group visit (GV) intervention has demonstrated improvements in disease-related outcomes through increased levels of patient …

Nutrition Literacy And Demographic Variables As Predictors Of Adolescent Weight Status In A Florida County, Leslee D'Amato-Kubiet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, childhood obesity has increased to epidemic proportions across the United States (U.S.) in parallel with adult obesity, which often reflects poor dietary choices and bad nutritional habits. Nutrition literacy, which encompasses the constructs of nutrition knowledge and skills, is considered a basic tool for good dietary habits and health promotion undertakings; however, its more definitive relationship to adolescent children’s weight status is unknown. Most childrens’ weight status studies have focused solely on behavioral aspects of adolescent food intake, taking into consideration parental influence, peer pressure, and societal expectations. Studies evaluating the measurement of nutrition literacy with regard …

A Correlational Study Of A Reading Comprehension Program And Attrition Rates Of Esl Nursing Students In Texas, Wendy Morris Donnell

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Decreasing the attrition rate of nursing students has become an important issue for programs in Texas as a means to alleviate the nursing shortage (THECB, 2009). Programs are admitting a more diverse group of students but attrition has historically been high among minority groups (Gilchrist & Rector, 2007). The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between English as a Second Language (ESL), a reading comprehension program, and attrition rates of nursing students. A secondary analysis of a large database which included nursing students from 27 initial licensure programs in Texas was completed. Jeffreys (2012) NURS model was …

Beliefs In Medications And Treatment Complexity As Predictors Of Medication Adherence Among Adults 18-65 Years Old With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Donna Bacchus

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Low adherence to medications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) results in relapses and subsequently increased healthcare costs, poor quality of life, and increased comorbidities. In this correlational study, treatment complexity and beliefs in medications were tested to determine if they are predictors of medication adherence. Through convenience sampling, participants were recruited through face book, IBD organizations, and foundation websites (n = 369 final sample size). Females comprised the overwhelming majority (81.8%) of the sample. Using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, approximately 56% were classified as nonadherent and 44% as adherent. Beliefs in medications were measured by four subscales: …

Validation Of A Transcutaneous Bilirubin Nomogram In Identifying Hispanic Neonates At Risk For Hyperbilirubinemia, Nancy G. Engle

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

All newborns are at potential risk of adverse outcomes if they are not monitored for hyperbilirubinemia or if treatment for this problem is inadequate. Strategies are needed to accurately identify those newborns with clinically significant hyperbilirubinemia. Transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) nomograms offer a useful screening tool to identify and monitor newborns with jaundice, as well as a way to predict the subsequent development of hyperbilirubinemia; however, there have been few studies examining the accuracy of TcB nomograms. The primary purpose of this study was to validate a previously published but unvalidated TcB nomogram to independently determine its accuracy in identifying Hispanic …

Risk Factors For Release In Nurses With Substance Use Disorder, Kathleen J. Tinklenberg Jan 2013

Risk Factors For Release In Nurses With Substance Use Disorder, Kathleen J. Tinklenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is defined as the continued use of mood-altering addicting substances despite adverse consequences (Morse & Flavin, 1992). Nurses are not immune from this progressive and fatal disease and if left untreated, a nurse with SUD poses a double jeopardy: risk to the patients and a threat to her or his own health. Many State Boards of Nursing (SBN) have implemented a non-disciplinary alternative to punitive treatment of professionals with SUD; such programs offer monitoring for nurses afflicted with SUD. While studies have found a lower relapse rate for healthcare professionals enrolled in these monitoring programs than …

The Use Of Social Media In Undergraduate Curriculum, K Clark-Burg, P Carr, B Hay, K Mcnaught

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Social media (SoMe) and mobile technology (MT) have been topics of interest to many educators, health professionals and policy developers over the last decade. This year, two editorials in leading nursing journals have described the potential for SoMe in nursing (Jones & Hayter 2013; Ferguson 2013). A recent Australian journal publication further supports the potential of SoMe and in particular Twitter (Wilson, R, et al. 2013). Increasingly, nurses and other health professionals and the general public are actively utilizing new technology to improve health and enhance practice (Barton, A 2012)]. To-date, there is limited evidence on the use of information …

Standardizing care or critical pathways have delivered evidence-based care in adult medicine and have positive patient outcomes. Some aspects of standardized care have been used in neonatology, but less often in caring for the late preterm infant (gestational week 34-37 weeks). With each level of care nursery, Level-I, level-II or level-III, there can be a wide range of how to care for the late preterm infant. The purpose of this study was to determine if nurseries or various levels of care had established standards of care specific to the late preterm infant and what barriers existed that prohibited standards of …
