Cancer stem-like cells represent a population of tumour-initiating cells that lead to the relapse and metastasis of cancer. Conventional anti-cancer therapeutic drugs are usually ineffective in eliminating the cancer stem-like cells. Therefore, new drugs or therapeutic methods effectively targeting cancer stem-like cells are in urgent need to successfully cure cancer. Gamboge is a natural anti-cancer medicine whose pharmacological effects are different from those of conventional chemotherapeutical drugs and they can kill some kinds of cancer cells selectively. In this study, we identified a new gamboge derivative, Compound 2 (C2), which presents eminent suppression effects on cancer cells. Interestingly, when compared …

Evidence Based Practice: Patient Discharge Education Barriers To Patient Education, Catherine Lyerly Lingle Jan 2013

Evidence Based Practice: Patient Discharge Education Barriers To Patient Education, Catherine Lyerly Lingle

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Evidence-based guidelines for discharge instructions, when successfully administered, reduce readmission rates in patients, leading to improved quality of life and economic savings. Unfortunately, effective delivery is complex and time consuming, placing a high demand on already overworked bedside nurses. Failure to provide complete discharge instructions can result in non adherence to patient treatment regimens and lack of essential follow-up, the most commonly identified reasons for readmissions. To improve quality of care, hospitals need to adopt a new model that incorporates delivery of intensive, one on one education to patients during the hospital stay with continuing support, guidance, and education throughout …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

Airway management is the cornerstone of anesthesia practice. Fiberoptic intubations (FOIs) are one advanced airway method that Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) must be able to use. However, the low volume, high risk nature of this skill may affect a practitioner’s ability to perform this type of intubation. Despite this, no standardized training programs had been developed for this skill. The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an evidence-based educational simulation training program that allowed CRNAs the opportunity to practice safe FOIs and evaluate its effect on competence and self-confidence.

A review of the literature suggested the …
