Perceptions Of Childbirth Among Women In The Ashanti Region Of Ghana, Stephen Wilkinson, Dr. Lynn Callister
Perceptions Of Childbirth Among Women In The Ashanti Region Of Ghana, Stephen Wilkinson, Dr. Lynn Callister
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The topic of my research evolved out of a desire to do a field study in Ghana through Brigham Young University’s Kennedy Center for International Studies. As I researched health care issues in the Ashanti Region, I discovered that many of the medical challenges that people in West Africa face are related to perinatal care. I was aware of Dr. Callister’s research on cultural aspects of childbirth and when I approached her about this project, she readily agreed to be my mentor, expressing her belief that this research could make a unique contribution to the growing literature regarding culturally competent …
Support Of Laboring Mothers In Argentina, Melissa Pickett, Dr. Lynn C. Callister
Support Of Laboring Mothers In Argentina, Melissa Pickett, Dr. Lynn C. Callister
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The College of Nursing expects students to provide care for patients globally in other cultures as well as patients in our own country. Learning how to meet the mothers’ needs from Argentina will inform health care professionals how to provide the best care to mothers whose newborns are in the NICU. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to gain understanding of the experiences of Argentine mothers who gave birth to newborns who were receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Perceptions Of Public Health Nurses In Taiwan, Meagan Astill, Dr. Erin Maughan
Perceptions Of Public Health Nurses In Taiwan, Meagan Astill, Dr. Erin Maughan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The importance of health promotion and disease prevention, primary focuses for public health nurses, has been a source of debate between medical professionals, many of whom focus only on the biomedical aspects of health care rather than ‘holistic’ care (Mino, 2005). The public health nurse is at the center of this age old argument for directing efforts toward preventative care versus curative care (Brock, 1976), serving as a primary educator and encourager in patients’ lives to help them implement preventative care practices. While the public health nurse addresses the immediate needs of the individuals, the basic principles of public health …
What Critical Resources Do Hispanic Women Of Childbearing Age In Utah Need To Promote Adequate Health Care Practices?, Teresa Paredes, Dr. Ana Birkhead
What Critical Resources Do Hispanic Women Of Childbearing Age In Utah Need To Promote Adequate Health Care Practices?, Teresa Paredes, Dr. Ana Birkhead
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The health care practices of Hispanic childbearing age women in Utah affect the overall health care system in Utah. We believe immigrant Hispanic women lack resources (i.e. education, cultural, transportation) to take care of their health and their families. My mentor and I believe the lack of these resources influence Hispanic women’s health status and access to adequate health care. It is crucial for immigrant Hispanic women in Utah to obtain culturally sensitive resources in their communities that will help them learn how to care for their own health and the well-being of their families.
Retention Of Emergency Care Knowledge Among Nursing Students, Alanna R. Rowley, Dr. Sheri P. Palmer
Retention Of Emergency Care Knowledge Among Nursing Students, Alanna R. Rowley, Dr. Sheri P. Palmer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Much focus has been placed on studying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) retention among nurses, but little has been done to understand the retention of emergency care/first-aid knowledge among undergraduate nursing students. Even though nursing students are educated in basic emergency care and first-aid throughout school, it “does not guarantee that [they] will be competent when faced with an emergency” (Berckes, 1984). The Berckes study (1984) shows that after only three months there was a three percent decrease in emergency care knowledge/first-aid retention. This finding was statistically significant but not drastic. Since recertification requirements range from one to two years, it was …
Developing An Instrument To Measure Vaccine Hesitancy, Neil Peterson, Dr. Beth Luthy
Developing An Instrument To Measure Vaccine Hesitancy, Neil Peterson, Dr. Beth Luthy
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to develop an instrument to accurately measure vaccine hesitancy in parents of school-aged children. Utah consistently ranks below the national immunization rate average in numerous vaccine categories1. Immunization exemptions in Utah more than doubled between 1997 and 20042. To address vaccine hesitancy, an instrument must be developed to gauge why parents are reluctant to maintain the immunization schedule. The development of this instrument will then be used to understand vaccine hesitancy and steps can be taken to address this growing problem.
Developmental Therapies For Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit In Argentina, Kathryn Millar, Catherine Coverston
Developmental Therapies For Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit In Argentina, Kathryn Millar, Catherine Coverston
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The development of immature physiologic systems in preterm infants is compromised as they experience the environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Without interventions to recreate an intrauterine environment, the infant experiences delayed development and morbidities including hearing loss, retinopathy, decreased neurodevelopment, and impaired motor function.
Experiences Of Children Who Have A Sibling With Autism, Brianna Smith, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Experiences Of Children Who Have A Sibling With Autism, Brianna Smith, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to identify the experiences of siblings between 8 and 18 years old of children with autism (CWA). Identification of these experiences can provide an insight into aiding families and siblings with interventions and support groups. By helping family members cope with the situation of raising a CWA, the quality of life of the child increases (Burgess, Gutstein, & Montfort, 2007)1, as do experiences of siblings.
Predictors Of Cooperative And Externalizing Behaviors In Siblings Of Children With Disabilities, Christine Rae Platt
Predictors Of Cooperative And Externalizing Behaviors In Siblings Of Children With Disabilities, Christine Rae Platt
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: To examine whether caregiver burden, parenting style, and sibling relationships in families raising a child with a disability (CWD) predict cooperative and externalizing behaviors in typically-developing sibling (TDS). Methods: This correlational study included 189 families raising both a CWD and a TDS. Mothers and fathers completed self-report questionnaires on caregiver burden, sibling relationships, parenting style, and TDS cooperative and externalizing behaviors. Results: Authoritative parenting was positively associated with cooperative behaviors, whereas authoritarian parenting was positively associated with externalizing behaviors. Hierarchical regression revealed caregiver burden was a significant predictor of cooperative and externalizing behaviors; however, when parenting style was added …

Definitions Of Good Health Among Native Hawaiians In Las Vegas, Amanda Stromberg, Dr. Jane Lassetter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The world in which we now live is a global community where people of many origins and their respective cultures cross paths on a daily basis. We are a mobile society in many respects, including geographically, as people are no longer bound to their native lands and now migrate further from home, with more ease, than ever before. Though health concerns have always accompanied migrants, attitudes have shifted as research has uncovered both the positive and negative impacts of migration on the health and well-being of migrants (Hull, 1979).

Analysis Of Relationships Between Siblings And Children With Disabilities, Cassandra Perry, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In recent decades, the impact of sibling relationships on an individual have been found to be significant1 and for siblings of children with disabilities (CWDs), that impact has carried a negative tint; with struggles related to maladjustment, behavioral problems, and a stressful change in responsibilities2.
Becoming Mothers And Fathers: The Perspectives Of New Parents, Tawny Thomas, Dr. Lynn Clark Callister
Becoming Mothers And Fathers: The Perspectives Of New Parents, Tawny Thomas, Dr. Lynn Clark Callister
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Globally, birth is a significant event in the lives of childbearing parents. Understanding the perceptions of new mothers and fathers and their satisfaction with health care enlightens health care providers about parents’ responses to birth, their specific needs during that time, and actions health care providers can implement to provide the most ideal experience possible during this exciting and important event. “There is a need for increased knowledge of the perspective of childbearing families as they make the transition to parenthood” (Hickok, 2007, p. 5). This study is important to health care providers as it provides insight into the perceptions …
Memory Training For Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Charlotte A. Allsop, Dr. Barbara Heise
Memory Training For Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Charlotte A. Allsop, Dr. Barbara Heise
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dementia is manifested by a severely limited memory and performance of cognitive abilities. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is an early stage of memory loss which can later lead to Dementia. It has been proven that you can delay cognitive dysfunction, e.g. memory, by “training the brain” through various cognitive exercises. However, those with MCI are difficult to detect because their memory loss is subtle. The purpose of this study is to first, enhance MCI recognition in elderly individuals and second, to determine the efficacy of memory training in the community.
The Lived Experience Of Single Parents Raising Children With Disabilities: A Pilot Study, Janel Marx, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
The Lived Experience Of Single Parents Raising Children With Disabilities: A Pilot Study, Janel Marx, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Raising a child with disabilities (CWD) presents a unique experience and oftentimes is accompanied with many challenges. It not only takes a lot time and money, but can also be physically exhausting (Green, 2007). This responsibility is often distributed between two parents: a father and a mother. However, in some cases, caring for a CWD becomes the sole responsibility of one parent, due to divorce, death of a parent, or absence of marriage. In fact, according to recent data, a CWD is more likely to grow up in a single-parent household than a child without disabilities (Cohen, 2006).
Simulation In Nursing Education To Stimulate Critical Thinking, Katrina Duncan, Dr. Patricia Ravert
Simulation In Nursing Education To Stimulate Critical Thinking, Katrina Duncan, Dr. Patricia Ravert
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recent studies have shown that only 35% of new registered nurse graduates demonstrate appropriate entry expectations for critical thinking and clinical judgment . As the present nursing shortage continues to escalate, adequate preparation of new graduate nurses becomes ever more important. Simulation is used in nursing education to prepare nurses prior to the clinical setting. It utilizes the principle explained by Confucius when he said “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.” Simulation provides the opportunity to apply the classroom and textbook learning in a safe environment so that students may fully …

The Effects Of Spoken And Written Words On The Fermentation And Decomposition Process Of Rice, Janae Devika, Dr. Glenda Christiaens
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many studies have shown a relationship between positive words and enhanced health. In 2005 Masauro Emoto published a book “The Hidden Messages in Water” that gained popularity throughout the world. Emoto collected water samples, exposed them to positive or negative words, and then froze them. He then analyzed the frozen water crystals and photographed and categorized them. The book has many examples of crystals treated with positive and negative words. The crystals exposed to positive words appear to be more organized and have more aesthetic appeal than did the crystals treated with negative words.

Giving Birth: Australian Women’S Voices, Melody Kuhre, Dr. Lynn Callister
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Giving birth is a life changing experience for women throughout the world. While its significance is universal, women’s perceptions of childbearing are unique depending on their socio-cultural context. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe the unique perceptions of childbearing women in Australia. Our research question was, what is the meaning of giving birth to Australian women?
Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Sids In A Brazilian Population, Tania Maria Albuquerque De Oliveira, Catherine Coverston
Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Sids In A Brazilian Population, Tania Maria Albuquerque De Oliveira, Catherine Coverston
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My original research was actually directed at African Americans in urban Utah. Research shows that even 15 years after the Back-to-Sleep Campaign (a national campaign focused on teaching best practices of infant sleep and care), African Americans still experience the highest incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Syndrome Death). This is due to the lack of trust when it comes to following medical advice as well as traditions that are hard to let go. I had a facilitator and a group of subjects that could be a part of my research project, but I was unaware of the barriers I would …
Parents’ Perceptions Of Pediatric Diabetes Management Clinic Practices Using The American Academy Of Pediatrics Guidelines, Lisa Smith, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Parents’ Perceptions Of Pediatric Diabetes Management Clinic Practices Using The American Academy Of Pediatrics Guidelines, Lisa Smith, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The American Academy of Pediatrics established a standard of care for children with chronic conditions in order to improve patient and family outcomes. Standards for medical care emphasize the care being 1)accessible, 2)continuous, 3)comprehensive, 4)family-centered, 5)coordinated, 6)compassionate, and 7)culturally effective. However, very little research has examined how well pediatric specialty clinics meet these AAP standards. The impact of services is critical to the well-being of the child and the family. Therefore, this study analyzes parent evaluations of Pediatric Diabetes Management Clinics (PDMC) in Utah. By analyzing the PDMCs according to the AAP’s standards, staff will be better able to ensure …

The Relationships Between Nurse Attributes, Site Characteristics, And Labor Support Attitudes And Behaviors Among Intrapartum Nurses, Ann Prenger Aschenbrenner
Dissertations (1934 -)
Most American women deliver their babies in the hospital; an opportunity for nurses to make a positive impact. However, nursing labor support has been associated with fewer positive outcomes than support performed by lay providers, doulas, or midwives. Positive outcomes associated with continuous labor support include decreased cesarean deliveries, and use of medication or epidurals for pain. It was unclear why the outcomes were not as great when nurses provided labor support.
The purpose of this study was to describe the relationships between nurse attributes, organizational characteristics, and labor support attitudes, behaviors, and perception of barriers among intrapartum nurses. Conceptual …
