A Descriptive Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Gay Partners Of Hiv-Positive Men, Jon Christensen Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

HIV disease/AIDS has been the focus of much research since its introduction in 1981 and continues to have profound implications for those living with the disease and for those who are in close social relationships with them. One group that has received minimal attention in the HIV/AIDS literature is gay partners of HIV infected men. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of gay men living with a life partner who has HIV disease/AIDS who were not primary caregivers. A qualitative study using an interpretive descriptive approach was employed to study the experiences of ten …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen Nov 2013

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Presentations

Background An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP. Implementation The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

School of Nursing & Midwifery

This literature review explores the effectiveness of massage therapy to reduce cancer pain. As part of the review, systematic literature search was carried out on various electronic databases and specialised journals. Included are 19 research-based articles and 8 review articles. The review suggests that cancer has become a common health problem in the world and most of the cancer patients are going through intense and unbearable pain. Studies have reported that most of the cancer patients' pain reduced with therapeutic massage. Seventy-three per cent of cancer patients use massage therapy in the USA. Few studies are available in the context …

Love And Belonging: Strategies To Help Mentally Ill Patients, Shirin Rahim Nov 2013

Love And Belonging: Strategies To Help Mentally Ill Patients, Shirin Rahim

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Love and belonging is a concept, used by Abraham Maslow (a humanistic psychologist) in his motivation theory. Love and belonging is one of the human needs in Maslow's hierarchy and required to be fulfilled in order to achieve self-actualization. According to Lisbeth (2003) “Because of the social nature of humans and the long developmental period from birth to adulthood, the need for love and belonging is closely linked to the need for survival” (p.128). If a child is left with unmet need of love and belonging he may feel difficulties in forming lasting relations in future also and may get …

Are Im Injections Im In Obese And Overweight Females?: A Study In Injection Technique, Sara Palma, Pamela Strohfus

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

If given incorrectly, intramuscular injections may result in poor absorption of drug, reduced drug effectiveness, or irritation to surrounding tissues. In this study, IM injection techniques were observed and documented for needle length, injection site, needle insertion, and stretching or bunching of the skin during injection in a population of adult females. The patients' weights and BMIs were recorded to determine the amount of subcutaneous fat at the injection site. In 22 patients of varied weights, 90% of injections were given within current Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) guidelines in normal and underweight patients, and 17% were given within …

Executive Summary: Randomized Comparison Of Two Internet-Supported Methods Of Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, Mary Schneider Nov 2013

Executive Summary: Randomized Comparison Of Two Internet-Supported Methods Of Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, Mary Schneider

Randomized Comparison of Two Internet-Supported Methods of Natural Family Planning

Only 0.2% of US women use modern methods of natural family planning, i.e., the basal body temperature and the cervical mucus methods of natural family planning (NFP). The reason that such few women use NFP methods is because they are often ineffective, they are difficult to use, there is lack of access to properly trained NFP teachers, a lack of motivation to use a behavioral method, and health professionals are reluctant to prescribe NFP methods. One way to potentially increase the use of NFP methods is to provide easy access to an effective but simplified NFP method that uses a …

Influence Of Motivation On The Efficacy Of Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, Mary Schneider, Mary Lee Barron, Jessica E. Pruszynski

Randomized Comparison of Two Internet-Supported Methods of Natural Family Planning

Purpose: Mutual motivation is recognized as essential for effective behavioral methods of family planning. Few studies have studied this factor in family planning efficacy. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of mutual motivation on unintended pregnancy rates of couples who used natural family planning (NFP) methods to avoid pregnancy.

Study Design and Methods: Using an online taught NFP method, 358women and ( their male partners) indicated “how much” and “how hard” they wished to avoid pregnancy on a scale of 0-10 before each menstrual cycle charted over 12 month of use. This motivation scale is used …

A Measure Of Nephrology Nurse Perceptions Toward Advance Care Planning: Validation Of The Nephrn Perceptions Toward Advance Care Planning Instrument, Mary S. Haras

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a report of a three-phase quantitative research study that included the development and testing of an instrument to examine the perceptions of nephrology nurses toward advance care planning for persons with chronic kidney disease. Phase 1 began with the identification of the dimensions of advance care planning and creation of an item pool for the instrument. The instrument was distributed to five content experts for evaluation and comments of inclusiveness to measure perceptions toward advance care planning. In Phase 2 the item pool was pilot tested in a convenience sample of 50 nephrology nurses. Exploratory factor analysis …

Investigating Infection Control Behavior In Nurses: Impact Of Computer Charting, Elizabeth L. Beam, Shawn Gibbs

Posters and Presentations: College of Nursing

In a small mixed methods study, nursing behaviors related to infection control were evaluated as nurses participated in a video recorded patient care simulation. The scenario asked the nurse to care for a patient in both airborne and contact isolation precautions with small high definition cameras mounted in a real hospital room. The patient was simulated by a live actor with an artificial intravenous line. The simulation scenario asked the nurse to assess their patient and give them some pain medication. The simulation experience was followed by a Think Aloud session while participants watched their individual simulation performance. The session …

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker Nov 2013

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker

Faculty Publications

Nurses are often faced with the challenge of starting an IV line in a patient who is dehydrated, has suffered trauma, or is in shock. Even the efforts of the most skilled clinician may fail, while valuable time is lost. Intraosseous access is a rapid, safe, and effective route for delivering fluids and medications, and is recommended by numerous professional and specialty organizations for both pediatric and adult patients. Yet many clinicians remain unaware of the procedure. This article outlines the procedure and devices used, describes support for use in the literature, and discusses various considerations and nursing implications.

Preventing Maternal And Early Childhood Obesity: The Fetal Flaw In Australian Perinatal Care, Margaret R. Miller, Lydia A. Hearn, Paige Van Der Plight, Jane Willcox, Karen Campbell Nov 2013

Preventing Maternal And Early Childhood Obesity: The Fetal Flaw In Australian Perinatal Care, Margaret R. Miller, Lydia A. Hearn, Paige Van Der Plight, Jane Willcox, Karen Campbell

Research outputs 2013

Almost half of Australian women of child-bearing age are overweight or obese, with a rate of 30–50% reported in early pregnancy. Maternal adiposity is a costly challenge for Australian obstetric care, with associated serious maternal and neonatal complications. Excess gestational weight gain is an important predictor of offspring adiposity into adulthood and higher maternal weight later in life. Current public health and perinatal care approaches in Australia do not adequately address excess perinatal maternal weight or gestational weight gain. This paper argues that the failure of primary health-care providers to offer systematic advice and support regarding women’s weight and related …
