Measuring The Direct Nurses' And Nurse Leaders' Perceptions Of A Healthy Work Environment Within Acute Care Settings, Penny Susette Huddleston
Measuring The Direct Nurses' And Nurse Leaders' Perceptions Of A Healthy Work Environment Within Acute Care Settings, Penny Susette Huddleston
Nursing Dissertations - Archive
Healthy work environments (HWEs) have been described as policies, procedures, and processes designed to empower nurses to meet the organizational objectives and achieve personal satisfaction in the work environment (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, 2005; Lake, 2007; Schmalenberg & Kramer, 2008; Shirey, 2006). Unhealthy work environments (UWEs) throughout healthcare organizations have been linked to absenteeism, ineffective delivery of healthcare to patients and families, higher stress levels, poor communication, and ineffective collaboration and teamwork among healthcare professionals (Heath, Johanson, & Blake, 2004). The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) developed a Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool (HWEAT) for nurses to use …

Increasing Drug Screens And Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Assessments For Patients Enrolled In Opioid Replacement Therapy, Kimberly Thompson
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Opioid use disorder is an epidemic that has a devastating impact on public health, morbidity and mortality, and the escalating economic burden of healthcare (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2013). The rates of prescriptive and nonprescriptive opioid misuse are on the rise (Compton, Boyle, & Wargo, 2015). One approach in managing opioid use disorder is opioid replacement therapy (ORT). In response to increasing rates of opioid use disorder, the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 permitted "qualifying physicians" to treat opioid use disorder in an office-based setting. The FDA approved medication buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, is used …
The Relationship Between Faith-Based Support And Physical Activity Levels Among African American Women In Faith Communities, Sharon Taylor Johnson
The Relationship Between Faith-Based Support And Physical Activity Levels Among African American Women In Faith Communities, Sharon Taylor Johnson
Nursing Dissertations - Archive
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for death worldwide, and is a major contributor for a number of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cancer in the United States (CDC, 2014; World Health Organization, 2010). This public health problem is more prevalent among African American women who have been diagnosed with chronic health conditions and live sedentary lifestyles. Therefore, identifying strategies that contribute to improving physical activity levels are warranted for this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between participation in faith-based groups and physical activity levels among African …

An Evaluation Of The Adherence To An Indwelling Urinary Catheter Maintenance Bundle, Jessica Lynn Johnston
An Evaluation Of The Adherence To An Indwelling Urinary Catheter Maintenance Bundle, Jessica Lynn Johnston
DNP Projects
Background: There are more than 1 million Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) occurrences per year in the United States, with an estimated cost to treat of $400 million dollars annually (Clarke et al., 2013). Urinary Tract Infections are the most common hospital acquired infection, comprising roughly 30 - 40% of all infections occurring in acute care hospitals (Gould et al., 2009). In February of 2013, the University of Kentucky (UK) Hospital made drastic changes to the current Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) prevention standards by instituting a CAUTI Maintenance Bundle to prevent the incidence of CAUTIs.

Chiildhood Bullying: Assessment Practices And Predictive Factors Associated With Assessing For Bullying By Health Care Providers, Vicki Hensley
Chiildhood Bullying: Assessment Practices And Predictive Factors Associated With Assessing For Bullying By Health Care Providers, Vicki Hensley
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
Childhood bullying affects over 25% of today’s youth and causes up to 160,000 missed school days per year. Bullying causes short and long term adverse effects to both mental and physical health. Many organizations encourage healthcare providers to take an active role in bullying prevention. However, there has been little research into the role of primary healthcare providers regarding childhood bullying and the effectiveness of different approaches to screening and management.
Therefore the purposes of this dissertation were to a) explore childhood bullying and the role of the healthcare provider in bullying prevention, b) develop and evaluate the psychometric properties …
Perceived Social Support And Self-Care In Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure, Lyne Chamberlain
Perceived Social Support And Self-Care In Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure, Lyne Chamberlain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Heart failure is the most frequent cause for hospital readmissions in Medicare recipients, with an estimated annual cost of $12 billion. Heart failure hospitalizations are also an independent risk factor for increased mortality. Self-care, thought to be enhanced by perceived social support, is key to managing this syndrome, and up to 50% of readmissions are considered the result of inadequate self-care. Purpose: To evaluate perceived social support and self-care characteristics of patients hospitalized with an exacerbation of heart failure, and to compare these characteristics with a study of ambulatory patients with heart failure. In addition, to assess the relationship …

Sisters Of Mercy: The Walking Nun's Siouxland Journey And Experiences In Nursing (1890-1965), Diane L. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nursing history is like a kaleidoscope, with prisms of time representing the past, present, and future experiences of nursing. The existence of nursing history is unknown until it is written; similar to the shadowed image of a kaleidoscope mirror is the history of the Sisters of Mercy in Siouxland. Uncovered collections, documents, letters, pictorial archives, and oral histories provide a way to examine the work of the Sisters of Mercy in Siouxland in light of the Careful Nursing Model. On December 12, 1831, Catherine McAuley became the Foundress of the Religious Sisters of Mercy Order in Dublin, Ireland. These Sisters …
Improving Perceptions Of Menopause With An Educational Tool About Non- Pharmacologic Menopause Symptom Management, Megan Larsen
Improving Perceptions Of Menopause With An Educational Tool About Non- Pharmacologic Menopause Symptom Management, Megan Larsen
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
The time period surrounding menopause, or perimenopause, often is associated with many symptoms that are unpleasant and life changing for women. These symptoms, which occur in up to 70% of perimenopausal women, can negatively impact quality of life. There is little information available about how a woman can proactively reduce her menopause symptoms naturally, and many are unable to utilize pharmacologic methods. The literature review included in this paper reveals several different non-pharmacologic treatment methods that are supported by peer reviewed research, including: relaxation and stress reduction, ingestion of soy nuts, acupuncture, lifestyle behavior changes, and exercise. It has been …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating side effect of most chemotherapeutic agents used to treat cancer. To ensure the best possible care and outcomes for patients, nurses should be at the forefront of CIPN education and patient assessments. The purpose of this project was to evaluate an educational intervention for oncology nurses on CIPN and CIPN patient assessment by assessing the knowledge and confidence level of nurses in assessing CIPN before and after an educational session. The methodology for this project was a quasi-experimental one-group pretest multiple posttest design with a convenience sample of nurses employed by the Cancer …

Barriers To Health Care Among Laotian Americans In Middle Tennessee, Xaiyavong Saenphansiri
Barriers To Health Care Among Laotian Americans In Middle Tennessee, Xaiyavong Saenphansiri
DNP Projects
Background. Laotian Americans have unique heath beliefs and practices. The cultural differences between Laotian American patients and American health care providers can create challenges in achieving not only evidence-based, but also culturally sensitive care. Although the current literature addresses barriers to health care for Asian Americans, there are few studies related to the Laotian-American minority.
Aim. Describing the particular barriers to preventive and curative care in the Laotian-American population in Middle Tennessee would inform strategies for successful prevention and early treatment programs for this population. The purpose of the study is to describe the health beliefs and barriers to …

A Delphi Survey Of Leadership Attributes Necessary For National Nurse Leaders’ Participation In Health Policy Development: An East African Perspective, Nilufa Jivraj Shariff
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background: Nurses’ involvement in health policy development ensures that health services are: safe, effective, available and inexpensive. Nursing history reveals several legendary nurse leaders who have influenced policy and the course of nursing and health care. In the recent times there have been concerns regarding the availability of effective leaders physically, symbolically and functionally at clinical, organizational and national levels, who can effectively influence health policy. Exerting influence in the policy arena requires that nurse leaders acquire attributes that enable them to be effective in policy development activity.
This paper reports part of a larger study whose purpose included: “build …

Aim: This study examined the effects of healthcare-associated infectious disease outbreaks on nurses’ work in a large acute care hospital in Ontario, Canada.
Background: The incidence of healthcare-associated infections has increased. Previous research focuses on epidemiology, healthcare systems, and the economic burden of outbreaks. Few published studies focus on the impact of outbreaks on nurses’ work in acute care facilities.
Introduction: Since the severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2003, combating infectious diseases has become a key issue. Hospitals have implemented measures related to healthcare-associated infections. However, nurses experience challenges in preventing, controlling, and contending with outbreaks.

Knowledge And Attitudes Of Select Ugandan Nurses Towards Documentation Of Patient Care, Grace Nakate, Diane Dahl, Karen B. Drake, Pammla Petrucka
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Ideally through documentation, nurses track changes in a patient’s condition, make decisions about needs, and ensure continuity of care. However, nursing documentation has often not met these objectives. In Uganda, the systematic nursing specific approach is not reflected in documentation of nursing care. A mixed methods intervention study was conducted to determine knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards documentation, including an evaluation of nurses’ response to a designed nursing documentation form. Forty participants were selected through convenience sampling from six wards of a Ugandan health institution. The study intervention involved teaching nurses the importance of documentation and using of the …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Preterm birth (PTB) is a final common outcome resulting from many interrelated etiological pathways; of particular interest is antenatal psychosocial distress (i.e., stress, anxiety, and depression). In LMI countries, both exposure to severe life stressors and rate of PTB are on average greater when compared with high-income countries. In LMI countries women are exposed to some of the most extreme psychosocial stress worldwide (e.g., absolute poverty, limited social resources). High prevalence of antenatal stress and depression have been observed in some studies from LMI countries. We propose a psychosocial, biological, and behavioral model for investigating the complex multisystem interactions in …

Graduates of an Abu Dhabi transnational nursing degree struggled with the mandatory national licensing examination. Poor pass rates undermine graduate career futures and impact on the workforce capacity building contributions of the partnering transnational educational providers. This paper describes how the design and delivery of an intensive examination preparation program dramatically reversed this trend. The objectives of this educational initiative involved the design, delivery and evaluation of a program that would align with cultural learning preferences and which improve the success rates of graduates attempting the national nurse licensing examination. To achieve these objectives, the program combined a range of …

The Changing Role Of Nursing: Opportunities For Nurse-Led Services For The Management Of Chronic Disease And Diabetes In The Uae, Sharon Brownie
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
There is little debate that current and future healthcare is, and will continue to be, dominated by the prevention and management of increasingly complex chronic health disease; the UAE is no exception. Preventive and disease management services directed at groups and individuals at risk of unfavourable health outcomes are core to the make-up of an effective health system. The burden of noncommunicable, chronic and diabetes-related diseases places a heavy strain on health service cost and service delivery requirements. The UAE is faced with the challenge of identifying and developing effective strategies for the prevention and management of the burgeoning prevalence …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background: Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BP/CR) strategies are aimed at reducing delays in seeking, reaching, and receiving care. Counselling on birth preparedness is provided during antenatal care visits. However, it is not clear why birth preparedness messages do not translate to utilisation of facility delivery. This study explores the perceptions, experiences, and challenges the community faces on BP/CR.
Design: A qualitative study design using Focused Group Discussions was conducted. Twelve focus group discussions were held with four separate groups: young men and women and older men and women in a rural community in Tanzania. Qualitative content analysis was used …

High rates of mental health problems among people living with HIV (PLWH) have been widely reported in the literature; however, an understanding of the socioecological contexts of these presentations remains limited, particularly in China. In order to explore potential socioecological factors associated with mental health problems among newly diagnosed HIV-infected migrant men who have sex with men (MSM), we employed a life profile approach conducting semistructured in-depth interviews with 31 newly diagnosed HIV-infected MSM residing in a city in Southern China. Participants’ life profile accounts outlined their concerns, including internalized stigma, subsistence living, difficulties finding a lover or a stable …
