Paternal Age Is Associated With Offspring Bone Health—But Not Soft Tissue Composition Or Fracture: The Vitamin D In Pregnancy Study, Mia A. Percival, Kara B. Anderson, Julie A. Pasco, Marc Sim, Sarah M. Hosking, John D. Wark, Natalie K. Hyde
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that paternal health may be associated with offspring later life heath. In this study, advanced paternal age at childbirth was associated with poorer offspring bone mineral density and content at age 11 years. These findings suggest that paternal age may impact childhood musculoskeletal development, warranting further investigation. Introduction: Maternal health during pregnancy is known to impact offspring’s later life health. However, emerging evidence suggests that paternal factors may also be important. Advanced paternal age is associated with poorer offspring outcomes, yet few studies assess musculoskeletal outcomes. This study investigated the association between paternal age at childbirth …
Using Text Messages To Reduce Pediatric No-Show Rates In Primary Pediatric Care, Kelly A. Rexford-Hudson
Using Text Messages To Reduce Pediatric No-Show Rates In Primary Pediatric Care, Kelly A. Rexford-Hudson
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Pediatric appointment no-show rates lead to fragmented care, missed preventative services, delayed immunizations, and reduced clinic efficiency. Children who miss well-child and follow-up visits are at increased risk for unmanaged chronic conditions and gaps in developmental surveillance. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to evaluate whether bilingual text message reminders would decrease no-show rates in a pediatric primary care clinic. Led by the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model, this intervention consisted of two manual text message reminders, delivered in English and Spanish, at 7 days and 2 days before scheduled appointments during a …

Poct Hgb A1c And Patient Satisfaction In Adult Patients With Diabetes, Kelly Galvin
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Point-of-care testing (POCT) is used to measure a variety of healthcare data rapidly at the bedside. It can be particularly useful when laboratory data is not available at the time a patient sees their healthcare provider (HCP). Patients living with diabetes frequently do not obtain laboratory data prior to their visit with their HCP. This quality improvement projected aim to assess if use of POCT to measure an Hgb A1c level in patients with diabetes affected patient satisfaction in an endocrinology clinic. Eligible participants were asked to complete an anonymous survey, with three questions asking if having their Hgb A1c …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Problem: Planetary health, linking the well-being of human populations with the stability of Earth's natural systems, is increasingly recognised as essential for all organisations. Healthcare is a major contributor to environmental harm, responsible for an estimated 4.4% of global net emissions. As a result, healthcare workers have an important role in driving sustainable, low-waste practices within clinical settings. Aim: This paper outlines six practical, evidence-informed changes that can be introduced within healthcare organisations: adopting reusable tourniquets, reducing unnecessary glove use, recycling medication blister packs, promoting reusable nappies, using reusable or compostable blueys, and reintroducing stainless steel holloware. Discussion: These examples …

How To Reduce Inpatient Violence: A Theory Synthesis From Four Models, Arthur Walker
How To Reduce Inpatient Violence: A Theory Synthesis From Four Models, Arthur Walker
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Working in an inpatient setting inherently involves an increased risk of violence. This violence can affect both staff and patients alike and can lead to psychological trauma, serious bodily injury, and even death. To mitigate this risk, many models for preventing inpatient violence have been proposed for hospitals to implement. However, the evidence for the efficacy of these methods is inconsistent, and the theoretical underpinnings are varied and slim. This dissertation seeks to improve these models by re-examining the theoretical structures for common themes of four models for inpatient violence reduction and proposing additional recommendations informed by this synthesis. First, …

Seasonal And Geographic Patterns Of Gastroschisis In Canada: Protective Effect Of Periconceptional Sunlight Exposure, Shiliang Liu, Shin Jie Yong, Dunjin Chen, Gavin C. Hughes, Claude L. Hughes
Department of Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: Gastroschisis is a right-sided, full-thickness defect with extra-amnionic herniation of abdominal contents directly into the amniotic cavity. The causes of gastroschisis remain obscure. We hypothesized that limited periconceptional sunlight exposure might lead to insufficient vitamin D during fetal development and play a role in gastroschisis etiology.
Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study of infants conceived in Canada between April 2006 and March 2020. We used winter months (i.e., November and December) and northern geographic latitudes as indicators of insufficient sunlight exposure, while summer months (July and August) and southern geographic latitudes were considered as reference. We examined the …
Patient Experiences Of Receiving Home-Based Immunotherapy Infusions - A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study, Patricia Ann Cook
Patient Experiences Of Receiving Home-Based Immunotherapy Infusions - A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study, Patricia Ann Cook
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Context: The treatment of cancer and chronic health conditions has been greatly revolutionised via intravenous immunotherapy infusions. Demand, both globally and in Australia, is increasing due to several factors including aging and increased populations, subsequent increases of cancer cases, new immunotherapy indications and increased survival rates.
In Perth, Western Australia, a private service provider commenced delivering a home based immunotherapy infusions model of care as a hospital substitution service provider in 2013 and the service has now been extended across Australia. The safety and efficacy of home-based infusions have been well documented in research, and an increasing number of patients …
Increasing Documentation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressures: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Flight Crew Providers, Matthew D. Noss
Increasing Documentation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressures: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Flight Crew Providers, Matthew D. Noss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Background: There was a lack of documentation of endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressures (CPs) by flight crew providers at Base 1 of HealthNet Aeromedical Services. A three-month pre-intervention data collection showed 1.8% of patients had initial CPs documented. Inadequate documentation and monitoring of ETT CPs can lead to patient complications such as tracheal injury and aspiration making this an important area for quality improvement.
Purpose: To increase documentation of ETT CPs through education and evidence-based interventions.
Intervention: This project implemented an educational in-service on ETT cuff syringe manometry for flight crew providers. The educational intervention consisted of …

Implementation Of A Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Bundle To Reduce The Incidence Of Ventilator-Associated-Pneumonia And Improve Patient Care, Taylor Ryan Rice
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a concerning complication that can
develop from complications when a patient is placed on a mechanical ventilator. Endotracheal
intubation puts patients at risk for micro aspiration, which can lead to VAP.
Evidence Review: Nine articles were selected for review; after critical appraisal, seven were
kept for further review. Evidence in these articles shows that using evidence-based methods in a
VAP bundle can decrease the length of stay, mechanical ventilator days, and the incidence of
VAP.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to improve oral care for intubated patients and keep
the incidence of VAP …
Comparing Us Medicare Coverage Options As A Contributing Mechanism To Sticking Or Switching To An Insurance Plan, Lisa M. Grabert, Brian J. Miller, Kathryn L. Wagner
Comparing Us Medicare Coverage Options As A Contributing Mechanism To Sticking Or Switching To An Insurance Plan, Lisa M. Grabert, Brian J. Miller, Kathryn L. Wagner
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Background
In 2025, the US Medicare program is expected to spend over $1.1 trillion taxpayer dollars. A growing trend in the US Medicare program is more beneficiaries electing a private insurer, referred to as Medicare Advantage (MA), to manage their care. Since 2023, a slight majority of Medicare beneficiaries have elected to enroll in MA, yet little is understood about the mechanisms that drive beneficiaries toward their choices.
Methods
Our objective was to examine the association between comparing coverage options and ‘switching’ or ‘sticking’ with Fee-for-Service (FFS) Medicare or Medicare Advantage (MA). We conducted a panel study, using data from …
The Development Of A Midwifery Specific Tool To Identify The Barriers And Enablers To Change Within The Midwifery Setting, Sara Davis
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Despite being well-positioned to identify service gaps and propose improvements, many midwives lack the knowledge, skills, confidence, or tools to effect practice change. Implementation science (IS) offers a structured approach to moving evidence-based innovations into practice; however, existing IS theories, models, and frameworks do not reflect the unique context of midwifery practice. The first step in the intentional implementation of an evidence-based practice innovation is to conduct a context assessment to identify factors that may facilitate or impede its uptake. There are numerous evidence-based checklists for this, but none capture all the influences on midwifery practice environments.
In this study, …

The Experience Of Homelessness Among Older Adults In Bhutan - A Narrative Inquiry Study, Phuntsho Om
The Experience Of Homelessness Among Older Adults In Bhutan - A Narrative Inquiry Study, Phuntsho Om
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
A shift in the demographics of homelessness started to occur in the 1900s, with a significant increase in the number of middle-aged or elderly men and women being recognised as a part of the homeless population. The rising urgent global concern of homelessness of older adults necessitates a deeper understanding of the lived experience and holistic well-being of these marginalised adults. This thesis aimed to explore the phenomenon of homelessness of older adults in Bhutan, which is an often neglected topic in both national and international gerontological research.
Employing narrative inquiry within the constructivist approach as articulated by Pino Gravidia …
