Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox Oct 1985

Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox

Wayne State University Dissertations

The hospital nurse is required to make decisions that affect the lives of patients. The American Nurses Association Code for Nurses ought to be the framework used by nurses in making those ethical decisions. The Code is not the primary basis for ethical decision making as has been shown in this and previous research. In this research the role of hospital employer, personal and professional values of staff nurses has been examined for their influence on the ethical decisions made by nurses. The nurses completed the Health Care Work Powerlessness Scale, and the Nursing Dilemmas Test and Ethical Behavior Inventory. …

The Effects Of An Intervention Program On Nursing Burnout, Maria Rosa-Morales Sep 1985

The Effects Of An Intervention Program On Nursing Burnout, Maria Rosa-Morales

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The risk for professional burnout has become commonly recognized and in the past several years has been a focus of research efforts. Nursing is one of the professions generating a high level of stress which results in burnout.

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of an intervention program for nurses who felt they were experiencing burnout. Nursing burnout was defined as a chronic condition of stress among nurses, which leads to a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. The design used was a true experiment. Fifty-two nurses served as voluntary participants who …

A Comparison Of The Nurse's Perception Of The Priority Needs Of The Spouse As They Relate To Those Identified By The Spouse, Kathleen A. Johnston

Masters Theses

Twenty-five spouses of patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with diagnoses of Myocardial Infarction (MI), Rule Out MI, or Angina Pectoris were asked to Q sort 45 "need statements" to reflect their priority needs within the first 72 hours of admission to the CCU. Seventeen nurses caring for the 25 patients were instructed to sort the statements as they felt the spouses would do so. The data were submitted to factor analysis and three factors emerged; the Shared Factor, the Nurse Factor, and the Spouse Factor. The majority of nurses in this study were associated with a factor …

Masters Theses

A Pretest-Posttest Control Group design was used to examine the effectiveness of a self-care management approach to reduce the severity of chemotoxic stomatitis. Orem's nursing model. Levin's self-care theory, and Magoon's constructivist research methodology were employed as the theoretical framework. Subjects, 24 short-stay or out-patient oncology clients, were all beginning treatment with known stomatotoxic agents. Buccal cultures were taken to determine changes in normal oral flora during stomatitis.

The experimental group received information and direction for a systematic oral hygiene protocol. Post-chemotherapy oral assessment score means of the experimental group were significantly better (p

The Role Of The Nurse Middle Manager In A Military Health Care Setting, Terry Brown Jul 1985

The Role Of The Nurse Middle Manager In A Military Health Care Setting, Terry Brown

Nursing Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the expectations and perceptions of 63 military nurse participants from all levels of the nurse hierarchy for the role of the military nurse middle manager. Utilizing a tool developed by the researcher, the MMRQ, the study sought to explore role clarity and the importance of the management principles: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Relationships and differences in nursing perceptions were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Discriminant Analysis. Although the hypothesis of no relationship between expectations and perceptions could not be supported, findings revealed role confusion for two nurse hierarchical levels. The study showed military nurses differed …

Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman Jun 1985

Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recent investigations have shown that volume loading and alterations in body fluid osmolality cause rapid shifts throughout the body's fluid compartments in the adult dog. The lymph system has been found to be a vital link in the body's ability to compensate for excess fluid, and thus provides a strong defense against edema formation (Brace and Power, 1981; 1983). There have been no previous studies dealing with the investigation of whole-body lymph flow responses in the newborn. The purpose of this experimental research was to perform a systematic study into the whole-body lymph responses of newborn lambs to the particular …
