Evidence-Based Change Benchmark: Implementing Intervention Strategies Aimed At Reducing Patient Falls, Victoria Nix

MSN Capstone Projects

This paper provides an overview of an evidence-based change project that arose from the following PICOT: In patients at risk for falls [P], how does implementing fall risk prevention [I] compared to no fall risk prevention [C] affect fall rates [O] within 3 months of implementation [T]? A comprehensive review of primary sources dealing in clinical studies was found to support the case that fall prevention measures, specifically patient-specific bedside tools, have shown to be instrumental in reducing patient falls. The development and implementation of a robust Fall Prevention Program designed around the latest research was the goal; however, the …

Up And Moving: An Integrative Review Evaluating Early Mobility In The Intensive Care Unit, Rachel Huffman Nov 2021

Up And Moving: An Integrative Review Evaluating Early Mobility In The Intensive Care Unit, Rachel Huffman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Existing literature has highlighted the benefits of early mobility of patients in intensive care units. This integrative review (IR) sought to determine the best methods of early mobility intervention implementation. The search process utilized databases relevant to the selected topic, and the flow of information abstracted from the search process was placed into a PRISMA flow diagram. Additionally, review software was used to manage the collected data, ensuring that the search was documented with precision. To appraise the literature, a matrix was developed. The literature revealed that early mobility programs, protocols, and algorithms were guiding themes noted throughout this IR, …

The Use Of Video Monitoring To Decrease Falls, Marie Elizabeth Mo Oct 2021

The Use Of Video Monitoring To Decrease Falls, Marie Elizabeth Mo

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Fall prevention is a constant challenge for inpatient nursing staff. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate that falls in hospitalized patients will decrease with the initiation of video monitoring. A fall while in the hospital can lead to increased length of stay, increased cost to the organization, lack of reimbursement from Medicare, and the worst outcome is the patient never returning to baseline. Nursing staff struggle with fall prevention daily and are often unsuccessful. One to one sitters are often utilized as a fall prevention measure; this can be draining to hospital resources. Identified best practices of one-to-one …

How Effective Is Psychotherapy In Reducing Opioid Usage Among Patients With Chronic Pain?, Charity Harold Whorley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this integrative review is to evaluate the effectiveness of psychotherapy in the management of chronic pain thorough a comprehensive review and synthesis of current literature on the topic. Chronic pain is a prevalent condition throughout America with an estimated 30% of the population affected. As such, it is a common condition encountered in primary care. At one point the mainstay of treatment was opioid therapy. Unfortunately, this along with other issues has contributed to an overprescribing of narcotics and ultimately the opioid crisis in America. Healthcare providers are in a unique position to assist in reversing this …

Educational Tool For Chronic Low Back Pain Interventional Procedures And Modalities, Stacy Dominy

MSN Capstone Projects

Chronic low back pain is a problem for many people. It can be debilitating and those suffering often have a difficult time finding relief. Many times, people rely on potentially dangerous and and addicting medications for pain relief. Prehabilitation Prior To Cabg, Casey Bunker, Neil Peterson Mar 2021

Prehabilitation Prior To Cabg, Casey Bunker, Neil Peterson

Student Works

Background and Purpose: Globally, coronary artery disease (CAD) affects 126.5 million adults. To decrease mortality, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgeries are often performed. CABGs have inherent risks such as financial burden, physical complication, and emotional stress. Cardiac rehabilitation programs help decrease complications postoperatively. However, few interventions are performed preoperatively. Prehabilitation (prehab) programs have been created to address this gap in other types of surgeries. Prehab is the purposeful implementation of physical activity before a procedure to improve perioperative outcomes. Prehab prior to CABG has not been well studied previously. Furthermore, it is unknown if families should support a sedentary …

Development Of Nurse Practitioner Metaspecialty Clinical Practice Standards: A National Sequential Mixed Methods Study, Anne Gardner, Christopher Helms, Glenn Gardner, Fiona Coyer, Helen Gosby

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

AIM: To achieve profession-wide consensus on clinical practice standards for six broad Australian nurse practitioner specialty areas (termed metaspecialties). DESIGN: Sequential mixed methods with initial interpretive study (Interpretive Phase) followed by modified three-round Delphi study (Survey Phase). METHODS: Participants from all Australian jurisdictions were recruited. Main eligibility criterion was current endorsement as a nurse practitioner for 12 or more months. Interpretive Phase comprised in-depth interviews of purposeful sample of nurse practitioners to identify clinical care activities and practice processes. Six sets of draft clinical practice standards relevant to six previously identified metaspecialties were developed. Outcome informed Round 1 of Survey …

Reduction Of Hospital Readmissions In Patients With A Diagnosis Of Copd: An Integrative Review, Guerline Norbrun

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease with potential to interfere with breathing ability. It is the third leading cause of 30-day readmission and death in the US, and the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. It constitutes a society burden and poor disease management leads to major health consequences such as acute COPD exacerbation resulting in frequent costly readmissions, add to its massive direct healthcare costs. Over $50 billion are spent annually in direct care alone in addition to $15 billion in hospital readmissions; with 12 million adults are being affected in the United States …

Elearning Module For Nursing Students To Improve Delirium Identification, Prevention, And Management, Shannon Baker

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background and Review of Literature: Delirium is a serious, acute alteration in cognition and consciousness, which is common amongst older hospitalized patients and has an overwhelmingly negative impact on patient outcomes. Under-recognition by healthcare providers poses a barrier and contributes to poor patient outcomes, including increased morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: To reduce the incidence of delirium amongst acutely ill patients via internet-based education for student nurses on delirium prevention, assessment, and management.

Methods: An eLearning intervention consisting of a virtual lecture with an unfolding case study for undergraduate nursing students. This project utilized the Nurses’ Delirium Knowledge Assessment (NDKA) …
