Innovation And Accreditation: A Quality Improvement Process, Kara Koschmann

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Nursing program accreditation often has limited faculty engagement. This quality improvement project, implemented at a private university in the Midwestern United States, utilized innovative solutions including accreditation program champions and a learning management system to enhance faculty engagement in the accreditation process. Accreditation encompassed seven programs at three program degree levels: undergraduate, masters and doctorate. A survey measured overall engagement as well as the usefulness of accreditation program champions and the learning management system to improve engagement. Results showed increased faculty knowledge, professional development, and motivation in the accreditation process. Increased engagement not only accomplishes the work more efficiently, but …

Implementing An Escape Room - A Puzzling Process, Beth Cunniff

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Implementing an escape room: A puzzling process Educators are continually challenged to engage students in the learning process and implement active learning strategies. One method is to utilize a game-based activity. Game-based learning strategies are an active learning method which motivates students, promotes collaboration, and provides immediate feedback. Objectives from various cognitive domain levels are met through games. One game-based strategy that promotes the application of learner knowledge is an escape room. Escape room participants solve sets of challenges as a team to complete an over-all goal. Teamwork and communication are needed, in addition to critical thinking skills. The purpose …

Learning Concepts Of Quality And Safety Using A Personal Quality Improvement Project, Emily Nowak

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Background/IntroductionNurse leaders must be prepared to lead processes to create meaningful change. AACN's attention to quality and safety as an individual essential/domain warrants focused attention within the curriculum. PurposeA review of a graduate level curriculum identified a notable gap in quality and safety. A quality and safety course with embedded personal quality improvement project was developed to teach these concepts. Processes/ProceduresThinking about how learning concepts of Q and S could be implemented in a shorter and more concentrated period of time without losing depth or meaningfulness led to the development of a project-based course. Content was front loaded in the …

Learning Concepts Of Quality Improvement And Safety In Nursing Using A Personal Quality Improvement Project, Emily Nowak

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Learning Concepts of Quality and Safety using a Personal Quality Improvement ProjectNurse educators need to be keenly aware of the ever-changing needs of the workforce, our communities and our accreditors. It is well known that nurses play a unique and critical role in improving healthcare quality and safety. The expectation for nursing leaders to have knowledge, skills and attributes associated with Quality and Safety in healthcare are clearly outlined in the American Academy of Colleges of Nurses (AACN) Masters Essentials (AACN, 2008) and in Progress to Date: Revision of The AACN Essentials (Case-Wirth, McCurren, McFadden and Higgins, February 1st 2020). …

Water Aerobics: Experiencing Flow In Sacred Space, Joyce Perkins Jun 2020

Water Aerobics: Experiencing Flow In Sacred Space, Joyce Perkins

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

The practice of water aerobics has consistently filled me with the direct experience of flow for the past 26 years. This state of “flow” is the sense of the sacred in dynamic action (Perkins, 2003), also called “the zone” (Csikszentmihalyi, 2020). For me, water aerobics creates a shift in consciousness and a gentle euphoria that timelessly flows and exponentially magnifies within my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual body. I intentionally facilitate this same experience for participants of my water exercise class, which I created and teach for a local health club. This class meets all of my self-care needs in …

High-Fidelity Simulation And Clinical Judgment Of Nursing Students In A Maternal-Newborn Course, Carol Reid, Jody L. Ralph, Maher El-Masri, Katrice Ziefle

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Clinical judgment, one’s ability to think like a nurse, is an essential skill for safe nursing practice. With the rise of simulation to replace clinical experiences, there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of simulation on the development of clinical judgment. This study explored differences in clinical judgment in maternal–newborn courses between undergraduate nursing students participating exclusively in simulation and those participating in hospital-based clinical experiences. Following completion of the clinical rotation, students participated in an evaluative maternal–newborn high-fidelity simulation experience that was recorded and evaluated using the Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric (2007). Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric scores between the …

Perkins, J. B. (In Press). Accessing The Sacred, The Essence Of Nursing: Watson’S Ten Caritas Processes™ Revisited Through The Lens Of Unitary Human Caring Science., Joyce Perkins

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

This paper articulates how Watson’s Caritas ProcessesTM evolved to Caritas-Veritas Light on Virtues, facilitating unitary transformative experience. This shift builds harmonic coherence between major streams of consciousness that focus on: 1. The physical and conceptually concrete (objective/quantitative/ particulate/determinate); 2. The mental, emotional, meaningful/belief systems, (subjective/qualitative/interactive/integrative); and 3. The gestalt of spirit and the natural environment (virtual/quantum/unitary/transformative). The lived experience of harmonically braided streams of consciousness, meld human-environment/universe, potentiating health, healing, love and compassion. Unitary/transformative pandimensional awareness unfolds in the consciousness and everyday life, of the practicing nurse, facilitating a direct experience of sacred praxis.

Five Dimensions Of Wellness And Predictors Of Cognitive Health Protection In Community Dwelling Older Adults: A Historical Collage Cohort Study, Kelley A. Strout Dr Jun 2014

Five Dimensions Of Wellness And Predictors Of Cognitive Health Protection In Community Dwelling Older Adults: A Historical Collage Cohort Study, Kelley A. Strout Dr

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Wellness is associated with cognitive health protection; however, findings are limited because they only examine variable(s) within one dimension of wellness. This research examined the association between multiple dimensions of wellness and cognition among aging adults. The sample included 5,605 male and female community-dwelling adults 60 years and older. Four dimensions of wellness demonstrated a statistically significant higher mean difference in cognitively healthy older adults compared to cognitively impaired older adults, F(4, 5,595) = 47.57, p < .001. Emotional wellness demonstrated the strongest association with cognitive health, followed by physical and spiritual wellness, F(5, 5,372) = 50.35, p < .001. Future research is needed to examine the cognitive protective benefits of wellness using longitudinal, prospective designs that control for the potential temporal relationship between wellness and cognition.DOI: 10.1177/0898010114540322

Identifying Disease Characteristics, Parent Experience And Coping Strategies When Predicting Pediatric Illness-Related Stress In Parents Of Children With Mitochondrial Disease, Brenda Senger

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Mitochondrial disease (mito) is a group of rare, inherited, chronic, life-limiting, incurable neurodegenerative disorders known to affect children early in life that result from failure of the mitochondria to turn food into energy. The diagnosis of mito is elusive and complex, with a variety of clinical manifestations, multisystem involvement and the lack of a reliable biological marker for screening and diagnosis. The unpredictable prognosis and erratic nature of this illness can be overwhelming to parents who bear the daily responsibilities of managing the child's care. Little is known about the experience of parents caring for a child with mito.
