Breast Self-Examination: How Nurses Can Influence Performance, Carol Sternberger
Breast Self-Examination: How Nurses Can Influence Performance, Carol Sternberger
Carol S Sternberger
Breast self-examination (BSE) is a detection technique that is performed on a regular monthly basis by only 25% to 35% of American women. The incidence of breast cancer is steadily rising. Mammography not only fails to detect some cancers but is not available to many women. BSE is an important self-care technique that nurses should teach all female patients, regardless of the setting.

Technological Ubiquity: Educating Educators For The Dynamic Digital Landscape, Carol Sternberger

Educators must be responsive to the dynamic, technology rich healthcare environment. It is important for universities to move beyond expecting graduates to have isolated technology skills. Designing curricula that will produce graduates who are comfortable using technology and possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize data requires a different approach to education. The paper focuses on the various technologies integrated in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Best practices, evidence-based methods and integrated concepts from a requisite informatics course were foundational in the course assignments that focused on the …

Think Globally, Learn Locally: Multimedia Conferencing Between Two Schools Of Nursing, Carol Sternberger, Belinda Deal, Rebecca Fountain

Three nurse educators, who met at the American Nurses Association Nursing Care in Life, Death, and Disaster Conference, collaborated on a multimedia conferencing project to teach nursing students about disaster response. This case study examines two outcomes of this project. The project provided students in a disaster nursing course in Indiana an opportunity to meet faculty who helped establish and maintain a special needs shelter in Texas following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It also demonstrated, through the use of technology, the ability of nurse faculty to share their expertise with colleagues and students residing in different geographical locations.

Interactive Learning Environment: Engaging Students Using Clickers, Carol Sternberger
Carol S Sternberger
Educators continue to search for effective methods that will engage students in their learning. This article presents the integration of clickers while using the constructivist approach to foster critical thinking wile engaging learners in a large classroom setting. A 22-item survey was used to measure the perceived value by students to the use of clickers in engaging them in the learning process and fostering critical thinking. Clickers, also known as personal response systems, created an interactive environment, moving students beyond simple recall to application, analysis, and construction of knowledge.

Preparing Nurse Educators: Designing Hps Simulations Using Cerner Aes., Carol Sternberger
Carol S Sternberger
In this presentation we will share the artifacts created in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Nursing education must become responsive to the dynamic, technology rich healthcare environment. Incorporating electronic health records (EHR) and human patient simulators (HPS) into nursing education provide a harm-free milieu for students to develop clinical judgment by interacting with patients, interdisciplinary teams, and family members. The nursing department had several HPS but did not have access to EHR software, an integral piece of the simulation experience. Incorporating Cerner’s Academic Education Solution (AES) with existing HPS …

Ever-changing technological advances in healthcare have challenged nursing faculty to design curricula that will produce graduates who are not only comfortable using technology, but more importantly, possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize clinical data that are stored in electronic health records (EHRs). Federal mandates put forth through the HITECH Act, 2009 require all health care institutions to fully adopt EHRs by the year 2014. This transition will lead to changes in the way nurses practice, making it important for educators to provide nursing students with the necessary informatics skills to provide safe and high quality care. Indiana-Purdue University …

How To Implement The Electronic Health Record In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Carol Sternberger, Linda Meyer, Tammy Toscos

Information literacy, evidence-based practice (EBP), and informatics are fundamental to delivering culturally competent, safe patient care. Yet most nursing schools continue to educate students in traditional ways; only a minority integrate high-fidelity simulations, require evidence-based literature to support nursing interventions, identify the five core competencies for healthcare professions delineated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and incorporate the electronic health record (EHR) to stimulate critical thinking and decision making. The Health Information Technology Act (2009) requires all healthcare facilities to fully adopt EHRs by 2014. This will change how nurses practice, underscoring the importance of teaching students about informatics and …
