Faculty practice can promote a collaborative partnership mutually beneficial to both nursing education and service. However, little is known about its implementation in developing countries. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential for introducing faculty practice within the cultural milieu of Karachi, Pakistan. Focus groups of nursing faculty, staff and students were conducted in various settings: government, semi government and private institutions to elicit the data. Data analysis revealed that a more comprehensive definition of faculty practice is needed that will provide the foundation for a culturally acceptable model of faculty practice in Pakistan. Nursing Students' And Clinical Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Teacher Characteristics, Shirley Chow
Nursing Students' And Clinical Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Teacher Characteristics, Shirley Chow
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Instructional and organisational strategies can improve students' transfer of knowledge and skill to the workplace. Constraints on transfer include: 1. a shortage of teachers who can build transfer inlo programmes; and 2. time span (interval) between teaching of the task and transfer of learning. Fifteen nursing students and five clinical teachers from a university in Western Australia participated in the initial qualitative component of the study. These students and teachers were asked to list effective clinical teachers' behaviours which were then compared with beaviours listed in the Rauen's Clinical Instructor Characteristics Rating Scale (1974). Using a modified Rauen's Scale, 200 …

Nursing: A New Day, A New Way, Lin Zhan, Jane Cloutterback
Nursing: A New Day, A New Way, Lin Zhan, Jane Cloutterback
New England Journal of Public Policy
The U.S. health care environment is changing rapidly. Its structure, financing, and delivery are being reconfigured toward an integrated system based on managed care. Increasingly, national interest in health promotion and disease prevention is moving care away from a disease-oriented, institutionally based model to a population-focused, wellness-oriented, and community-based system. Health care consumers are diversifying in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The approach emerging from these changes and others requires nursing to rethink, redesign, and retool its workforce to meet new challenges. This article analyzes nursing education, practice, and operations. The authors discuss the dilemmas and complexity of developing an …

A Comparative Evaluation Of Distance Learning Versus Traditional Teaching Methods In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Leslie H. Nicoll, Marianne D. Steinhacker, Teena H. Ouellette
Maine Policy Review
The policy question addressed by this article is whether distance education works. Are students taught by distance learning disadvantaged relative to their peers in traditional educational settings? The results of this study strongly indicate that distance learning in nursing does work and that significant benefits may result for rural Maine residents if distance learning opportunities are expanded.
A Proud Heritage : 100 Years Of Nursing Education, Virginia Commonwealth University
A Proud Heritage : 100 Years Of Nursing Education, Virginia Commonwealth University
VCU University History Books
In the late 1980s, nursing alumni, faculty, and students began planning for the one hundredth anniversary observance of the founding of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. The school traces its rich heritage back to the organization of the Virginia Hospital Training School for Nurses which opened in 1893. Betsy A. Bampton (MCV Class of 1960) undertook the writing of a school history published as the centennial celebration was set to begin. In this abundantly illustrated work, Bampton and her collaborators chronicle the development and growth of the eight diverse schools and programs that formed the foundation of the …

A sample of 20 patients were selected from two medium sized hospitals in Southeastern Virginia. Statistically significant differences at the .01 level were found between the means of the pretest and posttest scores of the experimental group for knowledge and state anxiety using the t test for dependent groups.
