This study addressed the need to better understand how a patient’s healthcare is influenced by lack of health literacy for limited English proficient patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. While registered nurses are a key component in the patient care continuum, there is a lack of evidence to understand the experiences caring for this vulnerable population during a pandemic. Health literacy is important to ensuring patients have the necessary knowledge and skills needed to actively participate as a member of their own healthcare team. Patients with low health literacy are at increased risk for poor outcomes and limited participation in decisions affecting their health or treatment plan. People with low health literacy (LHL) have difficulty comprehending and implementing basic tasks such as understanding medication administration. Low health literacy (LHL)--when patients do not understand their treatment or medications--has been linked to poor healthcare outcomes.
