The purpose of the study, guided by the health belief model, was to determine what effect an educational intervention had on blood glucose levels, health literacy, and medication adherence in older Latina/Hispanic women …

Of the 25 million Americans living with asthma, 6.2 million are children under the age of 18. In 2018, more than 11.4 million people with asthma, including more than 3 million children reported having one or more asthma exacerbations. The burden of pediatric asthma accounts for more than 13.8 million missed school days among children ages 5 to 17 years, $3 billion in losses due to missed work, $29 billion due to asthma-related mortality and $50.3 billion in medical costs. Asthma …

Development And Validation Of A Sepsis Course For Burn Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Colleen Melisa Reid Jan 2020

Development And Validation Of A Sepsis Course For Burn Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Colleen Melisa Reid

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sepsis is the most common cause of death in burn patients. Optimal recovery from sepsis requires early recognition and prompt treatment. When sepsis is suspected or detected, the 2016 Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines endorse immediate initiation of the Hour-1 Sepsis Bundle. Unfortunately, a random audit of hospital system compliance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sepsis core measure was less than 50%. A 2019 performance improvement project uncovered delays in antibiotic administration, and a search of scientific and burn center literature did not elucidate a course that educated burn intensive care nurses about sepsis. The purpose of this …

Review Of A Remediation Program In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Christopher Thomas Young Jan 2020

Review Of A Remediation Program In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Christopher Thomas Young

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

New nurse graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to achieve nursing licensure. In Northern New Mexico associate degree nursing program with a large disadvantaged student population, the average pass rate for the licensure exam often falls below the state board of nursing mandated 80% pass rate. This study's purpose was to evaluate the effect of an NCLEX remediation program on students' ability to pass the NCLEX, using Knowles adult learning theory to guide this work. The research questions investigated the relation between the remedial instruction and the 2 dependent variables KAPLAN predictor scores and NCLEX …

Best Practices For Screening And Early Treatment For Hiv In The Hispanic Community, Juliana Deboviel Jan 2020

Best Practices For Screening And Early Treatment For Hiv In The Hispanic Community, Juliana Deboviel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Hispanic community is among the ethnic minorities that are adversely affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States. HIV transmission rates and rates of death are high among Hispanic communities because of delays in HIV testing and late participation in HIV treatment, especially in the state where this study was conducted. However, advanced practices for screening and early treatment of HIV can improve patient outcomes and inform practice. Thus, this systematic review was conducted to identify the best available evidence for HIV screening and care in the Hispanic population in the Western United States that shares a border with Mexico. …

Quality Initiative To Reduce Falls In An Acute Care Setting, Janet Maxine Belcher

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Falls are the most frequently reported incidents among hospitalized patients in the United States with at least 4 falls per 1,000 patient days occurring annually. Falls are related to high rates of mortality and morbidity and high hospital costs. The purpose of this project was to evaluate a fall prevention quality initiative to reduce falls in an acute care facility by educating staff on an evidence-based fall prevention protocol. The project sought to explore whether implementation of an evidence-based fall prevention initiative in educating nurses would affect the nurses’ professional knowledge and the number of patient fall incidences in the …

Improving The Patient Experience With Communication, Pauline Adora Salmon Jan 2020

Improving The Patient Experience With Communication, Pauline Adora Salmon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A quality patient experience is one of the highest priorities for hospitals as patients and families are looking to healthcare providers to meet their demands for quality service. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey measures the extent to which providers effectively communicate pertinent information such as communication about medications. On a 20-bed intermediate care unit, the HCAHPS item scores relating to nurse communication and communication about medicine were inconsistent and, on most occasions, were below the comparison benchmark of the 50th percentile when compared to other like hospitals. The purpose of this quality improvement project …

Systematic Literature Review On Fall Prevention In An Acute Care Hospital Setting, Sonia A. Hudson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Falls, with and without injury, in acute care hospitals are quite common but can be prevented if appropriate interventions are in place to address this issue. It is imperative that nurses assess fall risks of all patients admitted to the hospital and advocate for appropriate interventions to prevent falls in those who are found to be at risk. The purpose of this project was to recommend changes to the current fall prevention protocol in the project facility, an acute care hospital, based on best practices identified in a systematic review of the literature. At the time of the project, the …

Examining Icu Nurses' Knowledge Of Ventilator-Associated Events And Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia, Dorothy J. Sanders-Thompson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ventilator-associated events (VAEs) are patients' complications of respiratory conditions including ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Research shows that VAP is the most common hospital-acquired infection among ventilated patients and a leading source of mortality. With greater risk for complications among ventilated- supported patients, nurses working in the ICU must keep abreast of new knowledge and update expertise to develop technical and clinical skills in daily practice. The purpose of this project was to assess whether an educational intervention would increase the ICU nurses' level of knowledge of the evidence-based intervention. Knowles' adult learning theory was chosen for this project. A paired-samples t-test …
