BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control reports that motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are the leading cause of injury and death among U.S. teenagers, and disproportionately affect males. Among preventable causes of MVCs involving teenage drivers, distracted driving continues to be a serious public health problem. OBJECTIVES: To describe gender differences in teenage drivers' self-perceptions of safe driving behaviors, and self-reported risk behaviors and distractions while driving. METHODS: We prospectively surveyed teenage drivers from four high schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Gender comparisons were made between self-reported perceptions and self-reported driving behaviors. Descriptive statistics and chi-squared testing were used in …

Technology-Enhanced Practice For Patients With Chronic Cardiac Disease: Home Implementation And Evaluation, Patricia Flatley Brennan, Gail Casper, Laura Burke, Kathy Johnson, Roger Brown, Rupa Valdez, Margaret Sebern, Oscar Perez, Billie Sturgeon

Margaret Sebern

Objective This 3-year field experiment engaged 60 nurses and 282 patients in the design and evaluation of an innovative home-care nursing model, referred to as technology-enhanced practice (TEP). Methods Nurses using TEP augmented the usual care with a web-based resource (HeartCareII) that provided patients with self-management information, self-monitoring tools, and messaging services. Results Patients exposed to TEP demonstrated better quality of life and self-management of chronic heart disease during the first 4 weeks, and were no more likely than patients in usual care to make unplanned visits to a clinician or hospital. Both groups demonstrated the same long-term symptom management …

Establishing Intervention Fidelity Of An Oral Motor Intervention For Preterm Infants, Brenda Lessen, Clare Morello, Lori Williams

Brenda S. Lessen

Purpose: To establish intervention fidelity of the premature infant oral motor intervention (PIOMI)

Design and sample: A rating tool was developed and tested for interrater reliability before being used to test the fidelity of intervention behaviors. A purposeful convenience sample of three users was recruited to perform the intervention under direct observation.

Main outcome variables: Three types of reliabilities were calculated: (1) interrater reliability to test the rating tool, followed by (2) interuser reliability, and (3) test–retest reliabilities to test the intervention behaviors of several registered nurses (RNs) over repeated performances of the intervention.

Results: The rating tool demonstrated a …

Integrating Monitor Alarms With Laboratory Test Results To Enhance Patient Deterioration Prediction, Yong Bai, Duc H. Do, Patricia Harris, Daniel Schindler, Noel G. Boyle, Barbara J. Drew, Xiao Hu Jan 2015

Integrating Monitor Alarms With Laboratory Test Results To Enhance Patient Deterioration Prediction, Yong Bai, Duc H. Do, Patricia Harris, Daniel Schindler, Noel G. Boyle, Barbara J. Drew, Xiao Hu

Patricia Harris

Patient monitors in modern hospitals have become ubiquitous but they generate an excessive number of false alarms causing alarm fatigue. Our previous work showed that combinations of frequently co-occurring monitor alarms, called SuperAlarm patterns, were capable of predicting in-hospital code blue events at a lower alarm frequency. In the present study, we extend the conceptual domain of a SuperAlarm to incorporate laboratory test results along with monitor alarms so as to build an integrated data set to mine SuperAlarm patterns. We propose two approaches to integrate monitor alarms with laboratory test results and use a maximal frequent itemsets mining algorithm …

Using Simulation In Novel Ways To Teach Patient Safety (Qsen) And Understand The Student Experience, Rachel Ramsey, Susan Ahrens, Cheryl Rockwell, Katrina Kessler, Pamela Dekoninck

Katrina J Eby

This symposium provides a rich description of the ways in which simulation can be understood and applied to solve challenges in clinical education. These presentations are the results of work that was done in a nursing program in the Midwest. The authors of the presentations are all faculty at the University in the Nursing Department and have worked together for three years to understand, develop, and integrate high fidelity clinical simulation with sophomore nursing students. This symposium provides participants with the ways simulation can be applied in education to evaluate learning and solidify nursing knowledge. The symposium will start with …

Management Of Toxicities Related To Intravenous Administration Of Epidermal Growth Factor Inhibitors, Marie Condon, Gail Ross-Adjie, Leanne Monterosso Dec 2014

Management Of Toxicities Related To Intravenous Administration Of Epidermal Growth Factor Inhibitors, Marie Condon, Gail Ross-Adjie, Leanne Monterosso

Leanne Monterosso

The use of newer targeted cancer therapies, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) and epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRI) in the solid tumour groups can often result in a complex suite of cutaneous side effects. Whilst not systemically as toxic as some traditional chemotherapy agents, their cutaneous side effect profiles may have a considerable impact on the patient and their health-related quality of life.
Currently in Australia, cetuximab and panitumumab are the only intravenous EGFRI agents subsidised on the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. This discussion paper focuses on the nursing management and patient education related to the administration, side effects …

Developing A Research Agenda For Nursing And Midwifery: A Modified Delphi Study, Leanne Monterosso, Gail Ross-Adjie, Sinead Keeney

Leanne Monterosso

Aim We sought to ascertain the nursing and midwifery research priorities at a large private tertiary hospital in Australia. Design A modified Delphi technique with two rounds of questionnaires. Methods The first round survey was distributed to 448 nurses and midwives with a 19.2% (n=86) response rate. Due to a low response rate in some specialties, the second round of the Delphi was only sent to nurses in the Learning and Organisational Development speciality who were asked to rank ten identified topics specific to learning and organisational development using a five point Likert-type scale. Results Two hundred and fifty seven …

Identifying Psychosocial Risk Among Mothers In An Australian Private Maternity Setting: A Pilot Study, Nicole Reilly, Carolyn Yin, Leanne Monterosso, Sue Bradshaw, Kizzi Neale, Beate Harrison, Marie-Paule Austin

Leanne Monterosso

Background: Psychosocial assessment and depression screening are recommended for all pregnant and postnatal women
in Australia. However, women who give birth in private maternity settings remain less likely to participate in psychosocial
assessment programs, making it difficult to comment on the potential resource implications.
Aims: To describe the psychosocial profile of a sample of women who had recently given birth in a private hospital and to
examine the acceptability and feasibility of introducing psychosocial assessment as a routine component of maternity care.
Materials and Methods: Two hundred and twenty participants were recruited in a four-month period from a private
tertiary …
