Background; "Spinal cord malfunction in the lack of clinico-radiological evidence of spinal cord compression" is the definition of non-compressive myelopathy. In the absence of imaging modalities that show compression, it may be caused by demyelinating, viral, autoimmune, vascular, degenerative, and metabolic illnesses. Aim and objectives: The goal of this research was to assess the etiological factors of non-compressive myelopathy in a sample of Egyptian patients. Subjects and methods: Between January 1 and June 30, 2022, researchers at Cairo, Egypt's Al-Azhar University Hospitals (Al-Hussein and Sayed Galal) performed a prospective observational study on patients with non-compressive myelopathy. At three and six …

The purpose of this case study is to determine the effect of diaphragmatic breathing and endurance exercise in hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP). Nosocomial pneumonia that occurs in 48 hours or more after the patient admitted to the hospital, without any signs of pulmonary infection. The existence of clinical manifestations that appear, patients with HAP tend to avoid physical activity which can decrease the functional capacity of the respiratory system and have an impact on decreasing endurance. Diaphragmatic breathing exercise is thought to be able to help reduce shortness of breath, reduce the work of the accessory muscles of breathing, improve breathing …

Central nervous system manifestations of this disease are common, and typically include meningitis, facial nerve palsies, and radiculoneuritis. In this case report, we present a patient who presented with acute right sided hemiplegia and ataxia with negative neuroimaging findings of stroke, inflammation, or mass. Further investigation with cerebrospinal fluid studies and infectious panels revealed the patient had active Lyme disease. The patient improved his motor function, coordination and sensation with ceftriaxone treatment over a few weeks. Acute hemiplegia and …

Sars-Cov-2 Infection With Polymyositis- A Case Report, Muhammad Hassan, Fatima Mustafa, Naveed Ullah Khan, Taimoor Hassan, Mansoor Iqbal Chaudhry, Mazhar Badshah
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Among the most prevalent and least addressed symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection are myalgia, muscle weakness, and body aches. Only a few studies have reported polymyositis in patients with Covid-19 infection. At least one-third of patients with Covid-19 syndrome had elevated CPK levels. The cause of elevated CPK can be a cytokine storm or viral infection of the muscles. We present a case in which our patient developed features of myositis following the resolution of an acute viral prodrome caused by SARS-CoV-2. Our patient had both radiological and biopsy-proven neuromuscular manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 associated with polymyositis. Proximal muscle weakness began shortly …
The Sub-Standardized Approach To Stroke Management In Low And Middle-Income Countries Including Pakistan: Limitations And Suggested Options To Overcome Some Of The Shortcomings Via Teleneurology/Telestroke Application, Rizwana Shahid
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Background and objective: Ischemic stroke still poses a significant health concern throughout the world. However, low and middle-income countries (LMIC) in Asia have more devastating outcome. The vascular risk factors are prevalent in most parts of Asia, contributing to increasing incidence. The recommended approved treatment for acute stroke is limited to a few areas in these countries. We aimed to identify stroke risk factors, its incidence and prevalence; treatment opportunities offered in various parts of the region and utilizing the alternate pathways to improve the disease recognition and management outcome.

Background and objective: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare cause of stroke and may lead to the development of raised intracranial pressure due to edema, infarct or bleed. These patients may require decompressive hemicraniectomy to reduce the raised intracranial pressure. However, the evidence for hemicraniectomy in these patients is scanty. Our objective was to perform a retrospective chart review to describe the clinical characteristics of patients who underwent decompressive hemicraniectomy for malignant CVST and their outcomes.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with CVST who underwent decompressive hemicraniectomy between 2013 and 2020 at Shifa International …

As an academic researcher, my work-life revolves around testing the efficaciousness of pharmaceutical drugs on the prevention of cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death in animal models of heart disease. I never thought I would go from someone studying a life-threatening disease to a patient living with one in twenty-four hours. Yet, that transformation occurred October 8, 2019. I was just appointed to Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM), yet after sitting for my professional headshot I had a grand mal seizure. I cannot recall this event, but I bit the tip of my tongue …

Spontaneous Pneumothorax: A Rare Complication Of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Associated Diffuse Lung Disease, Emma I. Sherfinski, Mark H. Cooper Md, Phd
Marshall Journal of Medicine
The visually striking neurocutaneous findings of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) are well recognized and have been well documented throughout scientific literature. While not uncommon, the pulmonary manifestations of NF1 are unknown to many physicians. Complications of NF1 associated diffuse lung disease (NF-DLD) include pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary artery stenosis, subpleural cysts, and spontaneous pneumothorax. We present a case of a 34-year-old male with NF-DLD found incidentally in adolescence with previous apical bleb repair, presenting nearly twenty years later with spontaneous pneumothorax. In NF1 patients with pulmonary complaints, NF-DLD should be assessed with computed tomography (CT) and physicians should be familiar with …

Purpose: Sport-related concussion can affect many domains of a patient’s health status. Social functioning is an important consideration, especially for adolescent athletes. Our purpose was to explore adolescent athletes’ social perspectives regarding sport and concussion. Methods: Using a qualitative study design we interviewed 12 interscholastic athletes who had sustained a sport-related concussion. The interviews focused on injury details, and explored the physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual components of sport and health. Themes and categories were identified using the consensual qualitative research process by a three-person research team. A comprehensive codebook that captured the main themes and categories resulted. Results: Following …

Evaluation Of Respiratory Function Using Blood Gas Parameters In Yucatan Minipigs Following Spinal Cord Injury, Jackson Gallagher, Monique Morgan, Chase Knibbe, Destiny Gibson, Maxwell Boakye
The Cardinal Edge
There are approximately 17,810 new spinal cord injuries (SCI) in the U.S. each year [1]. Physical damage to the spinal cord has the potential to interfere with normal motor, sensory, and/or autonomic function, such as impairment of the respiratory system. In fact, respiratory insufficiency is the number one cause of mortality and morbidity after SCI. The more rostral the injury, the more likely there will be disruption to normal ventilation (generally rostral to T6) [2]. To conduct relevant preclinical research, it has been shown that large animal models, such as the Yucatan minipig, have a better success rate of translating …

Catatonia is a cluster of affective, behavioral, and motor symptoms. Its causes are multifactorial ranging from severe and untreated psychiatric illnesses to neurological diseases and other general medical conditions. It is estimated that 20% of catatonia causes are due to medical conditions out of which two thirds are due to an underlying neurological condition which might include encephalitis, neural injury, developmental disorders, structural brain pathology, or seizures. Symptoms of catatonia can wax and wane, fluctuating between the retarded and the excited type within hours making it more difficult to identify and diagnose. If left untreated, catatonia can lead to multiple …
