The Effects Of Staff Training, Incentive, And Information And Feedback On Incidence Of Vandalism In A Dormitory Setting, Donald G. Landeck

The effects of staff training, incentive, and information and feedback on incidence of vandalism were compared in a four dormitory complex. The staff training condition was implemented on resident advisors and taught alcohol education, confrontation skills, and programming skills. For the incentive dormitory, residents received money in a floor fund which was then exchanged for back-up reinforcers. Residents in the information and feedback dormitory were prompted to reduce vandalism via flyers, activities, and a feedback chart posted on each floor. All dormitories experienced an increase in the drinking age from 18 to 21 years of age during the second semester …

The purpose of the study was to validate a programmed text which was designed and written by the experimenter. Subjects in Group A, in Phase 1 of the experiment, were seven male and five female volunteers either working or enrolled as students in human service fields. Subjects in Group B, in Phase 2, were six females and four male graduate students enrolled in the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse treatment seminar at Western Michigan University. Applied qualitative medical sociology is almost an unheard of phenomenon. When it is done, however, It is usually accomplished by sociologists employed in academic institutions. Here we discuss the possibility of such a specialty, building upon the established literature and resources, as a potential area of employment and expanded sociology practice. Three "types" of approaches: symbolic interaction, phenomenology and Marxism are used to suggest the diversity and resources available in qualitative sociology.

Procedures For The Maintenance And Generalization Of Achieved Behavioral Change, John S. Wodarski

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Procedures for the maintenance and generalization of achieved behavioral change in anti-social adolescents are reviewed. A review of follow-up studies which provides the rationale for the incorporation of such procedures in practice is initially elaborated. Specific items discussed are possible avenues to the maintenance and generalization of behavior: social networks, peers, and parents; training socially relevant behaviors; changing the conditions of training; gradually removing or fading the contingencies; delayed reinforcement; and self control procedures. Throughout the manuscript relevant case illustrations are reviewed.

Twelve adult male rats were given free access to a two bottle free-selection of tap water or a 10% ethanol/tap water solution in the home cage for a period of 140 consecutive days with the alcohol consumption data in the form of mg absolute ETOH/g subject weight collected daily. This study incorporated three stages. Phase I was a 40 day period of alcohol acclimation with alcohol consumption during the second 20 days constituting the baseline consumption rate. The theoretical underpinnings of Washington County Children's Services Division (CSD) Immediate Conflict-Resolution Family Treatment Program include the systems theory of family therapy with a focus on communication and roles. One of the many approaches to helping families in crisis, it incorporates theories regarding assessment of and intervention in families in crisis. Finally, while it draws upon several different approaches to family therapy, the Washington County program is most closely related to Multiple Impact Therapy (MIT). Clinicians report that carryover management is one of the most difficult and time consuming problems they face (Johnson, 1972) yet the literature offers little data to assist clinicians in determining what methodologies should be used and which are effective in facilitating carryover. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the type of methodologies utilized by public school clinicians in Oregon to facilitate carryover with clients originally diagnosed as having articulation disorders. A secondary question dealt with the perceived effectiveness of these methodologies.

The Process Of Short-Term Psychotherapy With Mentally Deficient Adults, Joan Emily Carpenter

This paper explores the process of individual short-term ego-supportive psychotherapy with mentally deficient adults. The literature on clinical research, case studies, process research, short-term psychotherapy, and therapy with the mentally retarded is selectively reviewed. Four case studies are presented with clients at the Portland Habilitation Center, a sheltered workshop which trains mentally deficient adults in socialization, practical living, and job skills. Finally, the case studies are discussed in terms of the selected literature.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between adjustment to life-event stressors and selected psycho-social variables. Recent research has consistently identified an etiological link between stressful life-events and physical and/or emotional disorders. It has often been noted, however, that exposure to seemingly identical stressors results in varying levels of adjustment among individuals. Lazarus (1966, 1967, 1971, 1974) has proposed that variations in stress responses are attributable to differences relative to the implicated individual's appraised threat from the stressor. This study examined the relative effectiveness of Rational Behavior Therapy and a waiting-list control condition for reducing the frequencies and intensities of anger of inmates. The sample consisted of 46 adult male inmates who attained elevated psychopathic deviate scale scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and who expressed a desire to join an anger treatment group. The subjects in the treatment condition were exposed to fifteen group sessions of Rational Behavior Therapy, over an eightweek period. The subjects in the control condition experienced a no-treatment waiting-period. All subjects responded to pretest and posttest measures on the Novaco Anger Scale …

The experiment was an attempt to increase proper head posture using automated music as a reinforcer and to determine if this behavior would generalize to another setting.

Two cerebral palsy and mentally retarded subjects participated. Subject 1 was 24-year-old female, while Subject 2 was a 17-year-old male.

The two conditions included in this study were Baseline (no-music), and Treatment (music contingent on proper head posture). Generalization (no-music) was assessed throughout all experimental conditions. Both subjects wore the mercury-switch head apparatus during Baseline, Treatment and Generalization sessions.
